Buying a SIM card in the Falkland Islands is relatively straightforward. However, the SIM card price and packages are expensive for South American standards.
The telecom situation is rather unique in the Falkland Islands compared to other South American countries because the territory still uses satellites instead of submarine cables – that is almost never a good sign.
In this article, I will go over all you need to know about buying a SIM card in the Falkland Islands. Let's do this.

Can I Use my Phone in the Falkland Islands?
The Falkland Islands have GSM networks utilizing frequencies used in many regions around the world (such as Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania – ITU Regions 1 & 3), but not in the Americas (North-, Central-, and South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2).
If you purchased your phone in the Americas, if your device has not been unlocked, or the phone does not support the Falkland Islands' frequencies, then you cannot use your phone in the Falkland Islands.
Mobile Operators, Networks, and Frequencies in The Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands has one mobile operator:
The following frequencies are used by Sure Falkland Islands:
- 2G: 900 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 1800 MHz (Band 3)
Sure Falkland Islands does not have a 3G network. They skipped this generation of wireless communications and jumped straight to 4G/LTE. As a result, you need a device that is compatible with 1800 MHz on Band 3 if you want to use mobile data at reasonable speeds.
The 1800 MHz frequency on Band 3 is primarily used in every other continent besides the Americas.
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.

The State of the Telecom Market in The Falkland Islands
(Click here if you just want to know what Sure Falkland Islands has to offer).
The Falkland Islands is a remote territory about 650 kilometers off the coast of Argentina.
The islands use satellites to get internet on the territory. More than 99% of the internet traffic around the world goes through submarine cables, which are cheaper and faster than satellites.
As a result, internet, especially mobile internet, is expensive in the Falkland Islands compared to other nations in South America and countries around the world.
Although Sure South Atlantic partnered with Star Solutions to introduce 4G/LTE in the Falkland Islands in mid-2020, speeds are still slow, and prices are still high to this day.
For comparison, the average cost of 1 GB of data in the Falkland Islands is 40.41 USD. The South American average is 5.80 USD, and the world average is 5.03 USD, according to Cable.co.uk.
When looking at speeds, the Falkland Islands are not ranked in any of the speed comparisons (like the Speedtest Global Index or Cable.co.uk speed index) because speeds are slow, and speed tests can take up a lot of data, which is costly in this territory.
Although this paints a bleak picture of the telecom situation in the Falkland Islands, getting a local SIM card will be cheaper than international roaming.
Currency in The Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands use the Falkland Islands Pound, which is also known as the with the symbol FKP (which will be used throughout this article). Prices in the Falkland Islands are listed in (FK)£. For example, 25 FKP is £25. For reference, below are some exchange rates between GBP and USD (US Dollars – Rounded):
- 1 FKP = 1.25 USD
- 10 FKP = 12.30 USD
- 100 FKP = 123.00 USD
For up-to-date FKP:USD exchange rates, search GBP to USD on Google, or replace USD with the currency you use.
Do note that the Falkland Islands Pound is pegged 1:1 to the Pound Sterling/British Pounds (GBP), and that the Pound Sterling is accepted on the islands to some extent.
