SIM Cards in Finland: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Finland – known for (often) being the happiest country in the world, is a country in the Nordics.

Depending on who you ask, it is also part of Scandinavia, but this topic often brings up heated debates.

As a Nordic country, Finland is not known for warm weather, especially up north (but that can change thanks to lovely climate change).

However, some summer days do call for shirts and shorts; although Finns may claim they are literally melting.

While being a large country, it is a sparsely populated nation – mostly due to the climate.

As a result, however, the nature is stunning in Finland.

And of course, it is an excellent destination for winter sports activities.

Before you stream your snowboard experience, do note that international roaming can be expensive.

If you do not watch out, the roaming bill can be more expensive than your whole trip in Finland.

Luckily, there are ways to avoid roaming bills. One of these methods is by using a local SIM card, such as a Finnish one.

That way, you can enjoy local rates.

And the best part, the costs of SIM cards and mobile data are low.

You can get a Finnish SIM card for 4.90 EUR (5.20 USD) from Telia and DNA and 5.90 EUR from Elisa (6.30 USD). Telia also has a data-only SIM card starter pack with unlimited data for 24.90 EUR (26.55 USD). SIM cards are also sold at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL).

What is the Best SIM Card in Finland?

So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?

Finland has three mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:

• Elisa Finland
• Telia Finland
• DNA Finland

Anyone living in or visiting Finland can buy an Finnish SIM card without restrictions.

Where Can You Buy an Finnish SIM Card (+Costs)?

You can get a Finnish SIM card in Elisa, Telia & DNA stores. Resellers, like grocery stores and convenience stores, also sell SIM cards. Some Finnish airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).

You can expect to pay the following for Finnish SIM cards:

• Elisa Finland: 5.90 EUR
• Telia Finland: 4.90 EUR (regular) & 24.90 EUR (data-only)
• DNA Finland: 4.90 EUR

Note that SIM cards can be more expensive than those listed above when purchased at an airport.

Elisa Finland, just Elisa, is the largest mobile operator in Finland. It was the first operator to offer unlimited data plans in the country, and its competitors followed shortly. Elisa is also active in Estonia and is also the largest mobile operator there.

• 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
• 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 28), 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3), 2100 MHz (Band 1) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
• 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78) & 26 GHz (n258 – not in commercial use yet)

Elisa has extensive coverage throughout Finland, even in remote areas.

SIM Card Price – Elisa Finland

You can get an Elisa SIM card, called Saunalahti Prepaid, for 5.90 EUR with 6 EUR in credit in Elisa stores, R-Kioski, and grocery stores – there is also an R-Kioski at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

Most Elisa stores will turn you away and recommend you get a prepaid SIM card at an R-Kioski because they usually deal with postpaid customers/subscribers.

Luckily, there are around 500 R-Kioski throughout Finland, so it will be easy to find one.

Text ENGLISH to 18258 to change the Elisa menu to English.

You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Finland, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Elisa.

Especially if you get a Europe-wide eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported European countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).

DNA by Telenor is the smallest operator in Finland. However, it has the fastest speeds in the country.

DNA uses the following frequencies:

To top up your DNA SIM card, head to the online recharge portal, called DNA Laturi, where you can recharge with (international) debit and credit cards. However, only debit and credit cards issued in Europe, Canada, Russia, the United States, and a few undisclosed other countries can use online top-up.

You can also tell the salesperson at the DNA store or R-Kioski how much credit you want, your phone number, pay, and they will top up your SIM card with the POS system.

Text SALDO to 14000 to check your DNA balance.

You can also use the DNA Prepaid app to refill and check your balance (Android/iOS).
