Roaming with Videotron: Everything You Need to Know

Have you ever explored the Caribbean? How does a road trip through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil sound? Quite exciting, right? Besides arranging the practical details for your trip like accommodation and visas, should you bring your Videotron phone with you? Roaming, in general, is expensive, but is roaming with Videotron expensive as well? Can you even roam with Videotron? Let's find out today, shall we?

Can I roam with Videotron?

Videotron customers on unlimited voice and text plans can purchase Daily Traveller Passes, which allows you to use your plan's data in 127 destinations for $7 or $12 per day. Customers can still roam destinations not covered by the International Pass on Pay-Per-Use roaming rates, which varies by destination. These prices apply to plans ineligible for the Passes.

No idea how roaming works? I made this comprehensive guide about what roaming is and how it works. It is worth the read – promised!

What do I need to know about roaming with Videotron?

Select Videotron customers can roam with one the Daily Traveller Passes, which can be used in 127 destinations for $7 (US) or $11 (international) per day, or on Pay-As-You-Go roaming rates (prices are in Canadian Dollars – CAD)

The passes are available to all Videotron subscribers that have an unlimited voice and text messaging plan. Those who have a plan without data, are on flex-rate Data, or have an unlimited data plan cannot use a traveller pass. Those customers can roam on Pay-As-You-Go roaming rates.

What is the Videotron Daily Traveller Pass?

The Daily Traveller Passes allow you to use your plan data allowance while abroad together with your unlimited minutes and texts. For example, if your plan allows you to use 10 GB, then you can use 10 GB in Daily Traveller destinations.

The following passes are available:

  • US Daily Traveller Pass for $7 per day
  • International Daily Traveller Pass for $11 per day

When referring to the US, it includes Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Alaska. Do note that some plans cover the US already with unlimited calls and texting. You do not need the US pass if that is the case, and Videotron will not charge you $7 per day if you call or text in the US. You will be charged when data roaming if it is not included in your plan.

The International Daily Traveller Pass covers destinations in Central America, Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania.

Depending on how long you have been using your Videotron, you may have to activate the pass manually.

Do I have to activate the Traveller Pass manually?

If you subscribed to an unlimited voice and texting plan with data before the 15th of February, 2017, then you have to enable the pass on the Videotron app or by contacting customer care.

If you subscribed to an unlimited voice and texting plan with data on or after the 15th of February, 2017, then the pass will activate automatically when in an eligible destination. You can always check your pass status on the mobile app on the Travel section.

Once abroad, the pass will automatically start when you use your phone, which is making a phone call, sending a text message, or using data. If you do not use any of these features, then you will not be billed. You will only be charged for the days you are roaming, not the days you are abroad.

Man using his phone

How does billing with the Traveller Passes work?

The passes are not destination-bound, meaning that you can visit multiple Pass destinations in one day without being charged multiple times. For example, you could visit Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore within 24 hours, then you will only be charged $11 instead of dollar $33 (3*$11).

However, you will be charged twice if you are traveling between zones and use any of the roaming services.

Let’s say you have a layover in the US before heading to the Bahamas within 24 hours. You would trigger the US Traveller Pass and International Traveller Pass because of the stop in the US. As a result, you would pay $7 + $11 = $18 for the passes that day alone.

There is a maximum number of days you will be charged for per billing cycle.

For the US Traveller Pass, the maximum number of days you will be billed for is 10 days, which translates to a maximum of $70, even if you stay in the US for more than 10 days.

For the International Traveller Pass, the maximum number of days you will be billed for is 20 days, which translates to a maximum of $200, even if you stay in a Pass destination for more than 20 days.

Do note that this is calculated per billing cycle. Let's say your billing cycle starts on March 15 and you want to stay in the US for 28 days starting on the 15th. You would pay for the first 10 roaming days (March 15 to March 25) and roam for free for the remaining days.

However, if you were to travel from March 2 with the same conditions (28 days and the billing cycle starts on March 15), you would be billed from March 2 to March 12 ($7*10 days = $70), roam for free from March 13 to March 14, be charged again from March 15 (billing cycle start) to March 25 ($7*10 days = $70), and roam for free from March 26 to March 30. You would owe Videotron $140 (2*$70) for roaming.

Is roaming with Videotron worth it?

Roaming with a Traveller Pass is a convenient way of roaming abroad while keeping expenses predictablewhich makes it worth to consider.

You can use your minutes, texts, and data in many destinations for $11 a day (or $7 if visiting destinations categorized under the US). Those who are visiting multiple destinations in one trip can undoubtedly benefit from Fido Roam.

Road trip

I love the fact that after using the US Traveller Pass for 10 days, Videotron will not charge you more if you decide to roam longer. If you are roaming for 20 days, you will get 10 days for free (if in the same billing cycle).

However, before you can roam for free, you would have spent up to $70 on roaming, which is not cheap.

The thing with the Traveller Passes is that they can be expensive. If you are visiting an international destination for 3 days, you would have spent $33 on roaming. For that money, you can get a local sim for less in most destinations. Therefore, the Passes should be used in moderation for a maximum of three days. If abroad for longer, get a local sim, which is usually much cheaper.

If you really need the internet, use WIFI hotspots and get on internet-based apps like Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, or Skype to stay in touch with your friends.

Roaming on Pay-As-You-Go rates should be avoided. There are many destinations where you will pay $4/min or $20/MB, which is pricy. Imagine watching a 4K YouTube video on accident!

Lastly, do not data roam on cruise ships or airplanes. I would avoid maritime and in-flight roaming in general, but getting charged $20 per MB is crazy.

In short, roaming with Videotron is something you can consider. I would not use it for more than 5 days in the US or 3 days internationally, as you can get a local sim for that price. Pay-Per-Use roaming is expensive and should be avoided, especially if you are in a Pass destination.
