Roaming with Vodafone Fiji: What You Need to Know

Interested in traveling to Australia? What about Nauru, New Zealand, or the Lion City, Singapore? You have probably sorted your plane tickets, accommodation, and travel insurance already, but how will you stay connected when traveling? You have most likely heard that roaming is expensive, which it can be. Can you roam with Vodafone? How expensive is it, and where can you roam? Let's find out today.

Can I roam with Vodafone Fiji?

Vodafone Fiji customers can roam on Prepay Roaming Rates in 33 destinations or with the Roaming Made Easy Plan in 12 destinations starting from $15 a day (Fijian Dollars – FJD).

What do I need to know about roaming with Vodafone Fiji?

First, we need to know that the Voda-Roam bundles are not available to regular Vodafone customers. Those bundles are for Vodafone business customers only. Now that we have that out of the way let's see what roaming options Vodafone Prepay subscribers have.

There are 6 different Prepay Roaming Made Easy Plans ranging from $15 a day to $299 a month with each offering different benefits. Roaming on Pay As You Go roaming rates can be done in only 33 destinations. Standard roaming tariffs range from:

  • $1.00 to $3.00 per minute for local calls, calls to Fiji, and receiving calls
  • $4.50 to $6.00 per minute for international calls (not Fiji or your travel destination)
  • $0.80 to $1.00 per SMS
  • $1.00 to $20 per MB

Vodafone Prepay – Roaming Made Easy Plans

With the Roaming Made Easy plan, Vodafone customers can choose from 3 types of plans: Day Plans, Weekly Plan, and Monthly Plan. You can use these plans in 12 destinations at fixed rates. Those places are:

  • New Zealand
  • Samoa
  • Singapore
  • Sri Lanka

Tip: Looking for cheap flights? Book with AirWander and add stopovers! Not in a hurry yet? Set up flight alerts with Airfarewatchdog and get notified when ticket prices for your preferred route(s) drop!

Before we go through each roaming option, we have to go through the details that apply to every plan.

The Roaming Made Easy Plans are available to all Prepay customers. However, you need to need to have enough credit on your account to purchase your roaming plan of choice.

The Daily Roaming Plans auto-renew every day at 12:00 AM Fiji time (UTC+12 and UTC+13 – Daylight Saving Time) until you manually opt-out. To unsubscribe, dial *100# and select the unsubscribe option. The Weekly and Monthly plans do not auto-renew.

The Roaming Made Easy plan is not active until you have received a confirmation SMS from Vodafone. It is recommended to wait until you have received the text before you get charged on standard roaming rates.

The minutes you get with your Roaming Made Easy plan can be used to making calls to numbers in Fiji, numbers in the destination you are in, and to receive calls from anywhere. In other words, receiving calls count against your minute allowance, but you do not get charged extra if you receive a call that does not originate from your travel destination or Fiji. You will get charged extra if you call to a third-country (not Fiji or your roaming destination).

You can send SMS to any destination without getting charged extra. For example, you can send SMS to numbers in Brazil while traveling in Hong Kong without extra charge if you have a Roaming Made Easy plan active.

Your Plan benefits remain active if you are visiting another Roaming Made Easy destination while your plan is active. For example, you purchased the Weekly Plan when in Sri Lanka for 3 days. You want to see India for 2 days before heading to Australia because it is your layover before you can get to Fiji. You could enjoy your plan in all of these destinations because you bought the Roaming Made Easy plan, which is available in Sri Lanka, India, and Australia.

With that out of the way, let's review the roaming plans.

Is roaming with Vodafone Fiji worth it?

Now that we have explored all the roaming options we have to Vodafone, the question is whether it is worth to roam with them or not.

I usually tend to avoid roaming on Pay As You Go Roaming rates, as they are often pricy and add-up quickly. For example, the data roaming rates range from $1 per MB in Zone A destinations to $20 per MB in Zone E destinations. Data roaming on standard rates should generally be avoided, but especially in zone E destinations.

British Pound

What I do like is that Vodafone has roaming plans. I always consider those before going on a holiday. Luckily for you, the bundles cover popular travel destinations for Fijian travelers, which is lovely.

I do, however, think that the plans are alright. Sure, you get 100 minutes, SMS, and 100 MB for the cheapest plan ($15), which should be enough. However, what if you are staying in Nauru for 5 days? Should you buy the most affordable daily plan 5 times ($75) or go for the weekly plan ($99)? For that money, you can often get a local sim for much cheaper that gives you more benefits (more minutes, SMS, and data).

For some travelers, it is convenient or almost necessary to be able to use your number while traveling (let's say for business). In those cases, local sims may not be an option, and roaming may be worth it. If that is the case, I would recommend the cheapest daily plan if you are staying in a destination for 6 days (6*15), the weekly plan if you want to roam between a week and 3 weeks). If longer, go for the monthly plan.

The reason why I do not recommend the other daily plan options is that you only get a bit more data for higher prices. I will be impressed if you manage to go through 1 GB in one day. To keep data usage low, connect to WIFI hotspots, and use internet-based apps like Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, or Skype to stay in touch with friends. Or you can do so if you do not want to roam at all.

In short, roaming with Vodafone Fiji is worth it with the Roaming with Easy Plans, although they should be used in moderation. Roaming on Pay As You Go rates should be avoided to prevent high roaming costs.
