Bangladesh – known for being home to the world's largest river delta, for having the most densely populated city worldwide & for having the longest female-led government.
It is also the world's 8th most populous country, while only being the world's 92th largest country.
So, with this many people in the country, there must be a lot to do and see, right?
Yes, there is.
From temples, like Sompur Mahavihara, to museums, like Ahsan Manzil Museum.
From the many street markets to national parks, there is no reason to be bored in Bangladesh.
Let alone the country's stunning beaches, like Kuakata Sea Beach.
What makes Bangladesh even more exciting is that it is an inexpensive travel destination.
South Asia is not known for being expensive, which is great for those who do not want to spend their whole life savings on a trip (like in the Caribbean or Oceania).
This is another reason why you should get a Bangladeshi local SIM card because there is almost no mobile operator with lower international roaming rates than the mobile data rates in Bangladesh.
Moreover, SIM cards in Bangladesh are cheap too.
You can get a Bangladeshi SIM card for 150 BDT (1.35 USD) from Teletalk or 200 BDT (1.80 USD) from Grameenphone, Skitto, Robi, Airtel & Banglalink in their stores (or pick-up locations for Skitto). SIM cards are also available at Dhaka-Hazrat Shahjalal & Chittagong-Shah Amanat International Airports.
Not expensive at all, right? Just wait until you learn Bangadesh is in the top ten countries with the lowest mobile data rates globally.
Yep, that is right – data costs basically nothing (if you are used to much higher rates, of course – Bangladeshis reading this may strangle me if they read this without the disclaimer, haha).
In this guide, I will tell you everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Bangladesh. Let's do this.
Original publication: 26th of February 2020. Last updated: 1st of March 2024.
What is the Best SIM Card in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh has five mobile operators and one sub-brand offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:
- Grameenphone
- Skitto (Grameenphone sub-brand)
- Robi (Axiata)
- Airtel Bangladesh (by Robi)
- Banglalink
- Teletalk Bangladesh
Anyone 18 or older living in or visiting Bangladesh can buy a Bangladeshi SIM card with some restrictions, but you do have to comply with Bangladesh's SIM card registration regulations.
And if you are younger than 18, you can still get a SIM card if your parents buy one for you (in their name).
The main restriction is that you can only have 15 active SIM cards in your name in Bangladesh.
Even for people like me, who like to test out all the mobile operators in a country, this should be more than enough.
Besides those restrictions, you are free to use Bangladeshi SIM cards.
Regarding the registration requirements, you must show your passport at the point of sale.

Where Can You Buy a Bangladeshi SIM Card (+Prices)?
You can expect to pay the following for Bangladeshi SIM cards:
- Grameenphone: 200 BDT
- Robi (Axiata): 200 BDT
- Airtel Bangladesh: 200 BDT
- Banglalink: 200 BDT
- Teletalk Bangladesh: 150 BDT
Be aware that SIM cards sold at airports can be more expensive than the prices mentioned earlier.
Use the Wise Currency Converter tool (free) for up-to-date BDT (Bangladeshi Taka) to your currency (let's say INR – Indian Rupee) exchange rates.
For reference, below are some exchange rates between BDT and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 BDT = 0.090 USD
- 10 BDT = 0.90 USD
- 100 BDT= 0.90 USD
- 1000 BDT = 9.10 USD
- 10 000 BDT = 90.80 USD

(Travel) eSIMs for Bangladesh
The use of (travel) eSIMs has exploded in recent years.
Not only do more phones have eSIM capability (some US-sold iPhones are eSIM-only), but the number of providers adopting technology has proliferated as well.
This includes local mobile operators offering eSIM and platforms selling eSIMs (travel eSIMs).
If you want a local Bangladeshi eSIM, you are out of luck because the mobile operators do not sell them (to prepaid customers).
But remember that you have to comply with Bangladesh's SIM card registration regulations, even when you get a Bangladeshi eSIM.
If you do not wish to deal with registration for whatever reason, like privacy, consider getting a travel eSIM for Bangladesh.
Many eSIM providers have eSIMs for Bangladesh only, eSIMs for multiple Asian destinations & even global eSIMs, which I discuss in my Bangladesh eSIM buying guide.
Here is a quick introduction to your Bangladesh travel eSIM options:
- Airalo: Fatafati (Bangladesh only) & Discover+ (125+ countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS)
- Alosim: Bangladesh
- Holafly: Bangladesh – all variants include unlimited data
- Nomad: APAC (15 or 20 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant)
- SimOptions: Asia (32 countries)
And I know you love discounts, so use one of these codes when getting a travel eSIM:
- Airalo: MAR15 for 15% off (if you have never bought an Airalo eSIM before). Otherwise, MAR10 for 10% off (for existing users) – only the first 3000 users can redeem either discount code)
- Alosim: PTW for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
- Holafly: PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
- Nomad: ADU123 for 3 USD off (on your first-ever Nomad order only)

Bangladeshi Prepaid SIM Cards Explored
Below, I will guide you through Grameenphone, Robi (Axiata), Airtel Bangladesh, Banglalink & Teletalk Bangladesh, and go through:
- Background information
- Mobile coverage
- SIM card types, prices, and availability
- Recharge/top-up information
- Combo plans, data plans, and special packs (such as social media packs)
Let's see what Bangladesh can offer us in terms of SIM cards.
Grameenphone
Grameenphone is the largest mobile operator in Bangladesh.
It has, in most aspects, the best network in the country.
Grameenphone is run by the Norwegian telecommunications company called Telenor, which is active in Asia (Malaysia – Digi Malaysia, Pakistan – Telenor & Thailand – dtac) and Europe (Denmark, Norway & Sweden as Telenor and as DNA in Finland).
However, as it is the most popular mobile operator, it suffers from network congestion from time to time, which affects the network experience.
This is why other mobile operators may have better outcomes in tests. But Grameenphone is undoubtedly recommended for those visiting rural Bangladesh.
Grameenphone uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 900 MHz (Band 8) & 1800 MHz (Band 3)
This is what you will learn about Grameenphone:

* Topping Up Options & Methods + Balance Check

Upon activation, you can get several bonuses when you recharge your new SIM card.
If you top-up 34 BDT, you get 1 GB of data for 7 days and a Biscope (app) pass for 30 days.
If you top-up 47 BDT, you get 20 BDT credit (30 days), 2 GB ofo data (7 days), 15 local minutes (7 days) & Bioscope (app) pass (30 days).

You may want to get a travel eSIM for Bangladesh, which can be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Grameenphone (in some cases).
Especially when getting an eSIM covering popular Asian destinations if you do not stay in just Bangladesh or a global eSIM valid for up to a year if you want one eSIM to work practically worldwide.
My Bangladesh eSIM buying guide analyzes various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.
Here is a quick introduction to them:
- Airalo: Fatafati (Bangladesh only) & Discover+ (125+ countries worldwide + call and text feature) – use code MAR15 (15% off – first-time users only) or MAR10 (10% off)

But let's continue with Grameenphone for now.
Note that Grameenphone offers VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G)) if your phone supports it and you have enabled it in the settings.
However, VoLTE calls are only applicable to Grameenphone to Grameenphone calls or Grameenphone to Skitto calls.

Teletalk Bangladesh
Teletalk Bangladesh, just Teletalk, is the smallest mobile operator in Bangladesh.
It is a state-owned company. Not surprising to some, Teletalk is the worst option out there.
It was so bad that I omitted Teletalk in the previous version of this guide.
However, Teletalk has improved a lot over the years and managed to be the first mobile operator to get a 5G NR license.
But that is probably because the company is state-owned and pulled some strings Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.
Suppose you plan on visiting Dublar Char Island, Jamtola Beach, Katka Sea Beach, or Sundarban.
In that case, you have to go with Teletalk because it has an exclusivity in these places.
While Teletalk has improved its network and coverage, all the other mobile operators are much better options.
Perhaps that will change in the (near) future.
Teletalk uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 900 MHz (Band 8) & 1800 MHz (Band 3)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78) – not commecrial yet
This is what you will learn about Teletalk:

* How to Get a Teletalk SIM Card & SIM Card Price
* Topping Up Options & Methods + Balance Check

Coverage – Teletalk Bangladesh
Teletalk has the worst coverage in Bangladesh.
However, 4G/LTE reception is available in all populated areas. Although it may be weak.
Below is Teletalk's coverage map produced by Speedtest:
SIM Card Price – Teletalk Bangladesh
You can get a Teletalk SIM card for 150 BDT in Teletalk stores and service points.
Dial *551# to see your Teletalk phone number.
- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)
You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Bangladesh, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Teletalk.
Especially if you get an Asia eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported Asian countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).
In my Bangladesh eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.
But I will introduce them here quickly:
- Airalo: Fatafati (Bangladesh only) & Discover+ (125+ countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS) – use code MAR15 (15% off – first-time users only) or MAR10 (10% off)
- Alosim: Bangladesh – use code PTW (5% off – no limits)
- Holafly: Bangladesh – unlimited data eSIMs – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ (5% off – no limits)
- Nomad: APAC (15 or 20 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant) – use code ADU123 (3 USD off – first-time users only)
Once again, check out my Bangladesh eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.
For now, I will continue with Teletalk.
