Spain – known for the Siesta, the Paella dish & beaches.
It is also a popular travel destination for partying youngsters from all over Europe (especially countries where it is much colder than Spain, like Western Europe and Northern Europe).
While France gets the most visitors in Europe (86 million before the pandemic), Spain is a close second (81 million before the pandemic).
But that is understandable because the country has a lot to offer.
Besides the beaches and thrilling nightlife, the Gaudí-designed buildings, like La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, are stunning to look at.
The Mercado de la Boqueria market is a must-see too.
And let's not forget the many plazas and palaces, like Plaza de España and the Royal Palace of Madrid.
There is no reason to be bored in Spain. And if you are, shame on you 🤪.
Dealing with an expensive international roaming bill will certainly not be enjoyable because you forgot to turn off international roaming.
That feature can be expensive, which is why I always recommend getting local SIM cards, like a Spanish one, so that you can enjoy local rates.
Spanish SIM cards are not cheap, but the prices could be much worse.
You can get a Spanish SIM card for 10 EUR (10.70USD) from Movistar, Orange, Vodafone & Yoigo. Orange also has two tourist SIM cards for 15 EUR (16.05 USD) and 25 EUR (26.75 USD). SIM cards are also sold at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN).
If you are flying into Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport, click on the link above to read about the SIM card options at that airport to save some time.
Yes, I know many Eastern European countries have much cheaper SIM cards.
Luckily, the cost of mobile data is low in Spain, which somewhat compensates for the higher-than-average SIM card prices.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Spain. Let's do this.

What is the Best SIM Card in Spain?
So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?
Spain has four mobile operators and seven Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:
- Movistar Spain
- Orange Spain
- Vodafone Spain
- Yoigo
- Digi Mobil Spain (Movistar Spain MVNO)
- Lebara Spain (Orange Spain & Yoigo/MásMóvil MVNO)
- Llamaya (Yoigo/MásMóvil MVNO)
- Lobster Spain (Movistar Spain MVNO)
- Lycamobile Spain (Yoigo/MásMóvil MVNO)
- MásMóvil Spain (Yoigo/MásMóvil MVNO)
- Simyo Spain (Orange Spain MVNO)
In this guide, I will stick to the mobile operators and the most popular MVNOs, all in bold above, to limit the length of this guide (but also not to overwhelm you with all the options available).
But if you are interested in getting a SIM card from one of the unbolded MVNOs, you would have to do the research yourself for the time being. I stopped actively testing and reviewing MVNOs to spend time reviewing travel eSIMs instead, like the ones for Spain.
Anyone living in or visiting Spain can buy a Spanish SIM card with no real restrictions, but you do have to comply with the Spanish SIM card registration regulations.
- Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)
Which, in this case, is only showing your passport (or European Union ID if you have one) at the point of sale.
Where Can You Buy a Spanish SIM Card (+Costs)?
You can get a Spanish SIM card in Movistar, Orange, Vodafone & Yoigo stores. Grocery stores also sell SIM cards (especially for the MVNOs). Some Spanish airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).
You can expect to pay the following for Spanish SIM cards:
- Movistar Spain: 10 EUR & 25 EUR
- Orange Spain: 10 EUR
- Vodafone Spain: 10 EUR, 15 EUR, 20 EUR, 30 EUR & 40 EUR
- Yoigo: 0.01 EUR (but it has to be purchased with a plan)
- Lebara Spain: 5 EUR, 10 EUR, 15 EUR & 20 EUR
- Lycamobile Spain: 5 EUR, 10 EUR, 15 EUR & 20 EUR
The following Spanish mobile operators also have SIM cards targeting tourists:
- Orange Spain: 15 EUR (Holiday Pass 5) & 25 EUR (Holiday Pass 15)
Note that SIM cards can be more expensive than those listed above when purchased at an airport.

(Travel) eSIMs for Spain
In recent years, (travel) eSIMs have become extremely popular.
Especially after Apple made iPhones (14- & 15 series) sold in the United States eSIM-only, forcing its users to use eSIMs – even when abroad.
As a result, the adoption of eSIM technology by mobile operators worldwide rose impressively quickly.
Currently, Orange, Vodafone & Yoigo offer eSIMs to prepaid customers.
But if you purchase an eSIM from any of these mobile operators, you must comply with Spain's SIM card registration regulations.
Suppose you do not wish to do so for privacy reasons (for example) or want to be connected immediately without paying for an overpriced SIM card (or eSIM) sold at a Spanish airport. In that case, you may consider getting a travel eSIM for Spain.
In my Spain eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.
Surprisingly, travel eSIMs can be cheaper than a Spanish SIM card or eSIM in specific scenarios.
Moreover, Europe-wide and global eSIM options are also available at competitive prices (without having to deal with expensive international roaming rates).
In this Spain SIM card buying guide (the one you are reading), I will stick to the local SIM cards and eSIM, but you can read my Spain eSIM buying guide for more information about travel eSIMs covering the country.
But here is a quick overview already + applicable discount codes if you are interested in purchasing a travel eSIM for Spain:
- Airalo: Guay Mobile (Spain only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS)
- Alosim: Spain & Europe (32 countries)
- Holafly: Spain & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls
- Nomad: Spain, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant)
Here are some discount codes to sweeten the deal:
- Airalo: NEWMAY15 for 15% off (if you have never bought an Airalo eSIM before). Otherwise, AIRALOMAY10 for 10% off (for existing users) – only the first 3000 users can redeem either discount code)
- Alosim: PTW for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
- Holafly: PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
- Nomad: ADU123 for 3 USD off (on your first-ever Nomad order only)
Once again, check out my Spain eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.
The eSIM guide is as comprehensive as this SIM card buying guide, but it solely focuses on travel eSIMs (while the guide you are reading focuses on local SIM cards and eSIMs for prepaid users (where applicable).

Especially if you get a Europe-wide eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported European countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).
In my Spain eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.
But I will introduce them here quickly:

My Review – Movistar Spain
I had the chance to try out Movistar (again) in March 2022.
While it is still the largest mobile operator, it actually does not offer anything special – especially compared to its competitors.
However, Movistar is always a safe bet if you plan on visiting rural Spain.

Yoigo
Yoigo is the smallest mobile operator in Spain.
It is also the newest mobile operator in the country, which entered the Spanish market in 2006.
Until this day, Yoigo still has to catch up with its competitors in terms of coverage and speeds.

Yoigo uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 1800 MHz
- 3G: 2100 MHz

You can get a Yoigo SIM card for 0.01 EUR in Yoigo stores, but you always have to purchase it with a plan (between 9.90 EUR and 35 EUR). Yoigo SIM cards are not sold at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) or Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN).
If you are flying into Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport, click on the link above to read about the SIM card options at that airport to save some time.
- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)
It is also possible to get a Yoigo eSIM for the same price as a regular SIM card.
You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Spain, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Yoigo.
- Airalo: Guay Mobile (Spain only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS) – use code NEWMAY15 (15% off – first-time users only) or AIRALOMAY10 (10% off)
- Alosim: Spain & Europe (32 countries) – use code PTW (5% off – no limits)
- Holafly: Spain & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ (5% off – no limits)
- Nomad: Spain, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant) – use code ADU123 (3 USD off – first-time users only)
Once again, check out my Spain eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.
For now, I will continue with Yoigo.
Note that Yoigo offers VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G)) if your phone supports it and you have enabled it in the settings but no VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi).
