European Union: 66 Best Prepaid SIM Cards Buying Guide (2022)

The European Union (EU) – known for having the best and most popular travel destinations in Europe.

While some may think of beach-perfect countries like Italy, Portugal & Spain when they think of Europe, it also includes places like Azerbaijan, Georgia & Kazakhstan to some extent.

The region is home to one world wonder: the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

A region like South America has even three world wonders.

Even then, that does not mean you will have to be disappointed or bored when in the European Union – far from it.

From enjoying the sun in Southern Europe in places like Cyprus, Greece & Malta to ski- and snowboard holidays in “Central” Europe like Austria, France & (surprisingly to many) Italy.

Castles are plenty in countries like Germany, Ireland & Slovenia, while nature lovers adore Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden).

As you can see, there is probably something for you in the European Union.

Speaking of which, what countries are actually part of the union?

That would be Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain & Sweden.

Oh, that list also includes member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) – Liechtenstein, Iceland & Norway.

So countries like Andorra, Serbia, Switzerland & sadly the United Kingdom will not be covered in this guide.

Luckily, they are covered in my Europe SIM card buying guide – and I have individual guides for each European country too.

You should know that roaming in the European Union can be expensive if you use a SIM card from a non-EU member state.

But unlike any other regional buying guide I have written, I will not really recommend you to buy a SIM card per country.

That is because the European Union has a law as of 2017 allowing you to roam for free in any other EU/EEA member state.

How cool is that!?

Sure, there are some conditions attached to it, but this option can save you a lot of money while traveling throughout the European Union.

But with SIM cards sometimes costing less than 3 EUR, getting one per country can be a souvenir.

Or am I the only one who loves to collect SIM cards? 🤪

So, what are your options in the European Union? Which SIM card is the best? How much do they cost? And what plans are available?

This guide will answer all these questions for every individual European Union member state.

Yes, this is the ultimate guide to buying a SIM card in the European Union. Let's do this.

Table of Contents

Best Prepaid SIM Cards in the European Union (EU)

With 30 different countries, it can be a challenge to summarize which SIM card is the best for each particular country in the European Union (EU).

Will I give it a try? You bet!

In the European Union, you often cannot go wrong with Elisa, Epic, O2, Orange, Telekom/T-Mobile & Telia. A1, Tele2, Telemach, Three (3) & Vodafone can be a hit or miss. The largest mobile operator will rarely disappoint you. The smallest is often the cheapest and can be fine in urban settings.

Hey – I did my best with this summary 🙃.

For your convenience, there is a table of the best SIM cards in all European Union member states:

Why are the mobile operators mentioned above the best in the stated countries?

You will have to read along to find out 😏.

SIM Card Prices in the European Union (EU)

Now you know which mobile operators are the best in the European Union (EU).

But how much to SIM cards cost in this region?

It is hard to say because various currencies are used throughout the European Union

But I will give it a try:

You can get a European Union (EU) SIM card for “free” (plan purchase required) or between 0.65 EUR/0.55 GBP/0.70 USD (in Poland) to 100 EUR/85.75 GBP/105.20 USD (in Luxembourg). However, you will often spend around 10 EUR per SIM card per country (but the average is 10.25 EUR).

EUR? GBP? USD? What do those symbols mean?

Well, you probably know EUR stands for Euro and USD for US Dollar (and if you did not, then I am angry at you 😡 – just kidding 💶💵).

But GBP is just the ISO 4217 symbol for the (British) Pound (Sterling).

So, why not convert everything into Canadian Dollar/Indian Rupee/Swiss Franc/insert your currency here?

Currencies fluctuate every day – even every 15 minutes. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to keep track of all currency changes.

Instead, I want to keep track of SIM card offerings worldwide 🤓.

Worry not, Wise has a nifty tool keeping track of currencies worldwide in real-time.

So if you want to know how much 70 HRK is in Canadian Dollar, Indian Rupee, or Swiss Franc, simply select the currencies on the Wise currency converter tool.

Moreover, if your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.

Their fees are MUCH lower than banks, and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).

I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Euros, my main currency, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards. Open a Wise account FREE!

With that out of the way, let's see how much SIM cards cost throughout the European Union:

By the way: mobile operators marked in bold are the recommended mobile operators for said country. Moreover, only up to ten mobile operators and MVNOs are mentioned in the table (otherwise it becomes too wide – even though it already is). The mobile operators are listed by subscriber count order, while MVNOs are in alphabetical order

In many European Union member states with eSIMs offered to prepaid customers SIM card registration is mandated by law.

Therefore, if you wish to get an eSIM for the European Union without personal detail capturing, you can get eSIMs from Airalo, Holafly & Nomad.

I tested out the Airalo Europe (Eurolink) and Nomad Europe eSIMs in 11/8 countries recently – you can read my reviews here: Airalo & Nomad.

Airalo Eurolink eSIM Review
Nomad Europe eSIM Review

Unfortunately, I did not try out Holafly during that Europe trip because I had to focus on many local European SIM cards, but it does have great performance in some other countries I have used Holafly.

Holafly Travel eSIM Reviews by Phone Travel Wiz

And as of June 2022, Holafly has introduced unlimited data plans for all of the European Union (except for Liechtenstein).

So, of these eSIM providers, which one do I recommend the most?

  • Airalo: most affordable and great experiences (and Phone Travel Wiz readers love Airalo too, especially its Eurolink eSIM)
  • Nomad: (a bit) more expensive than Airalo in Europe, but it is a more premium brand. Great experiences too, although speeds are sometimes a bit slower than Airalo – coverage is spottier too
  • Holafly: used to be very expensive in Europe (but it still is outside the EU). However, the introduction of unlimited data plans has (somehow) dropped prices considerably in the EU. It is still (slightly) pricier than Airalo and Nomad. But you do get truly unlimited data at full speeds, which can be beneficial for those disliking data caps

In the tables below and throughout the guide, you will find links to the country-specific eSIMs provided by Airalo, Nomad & Holafly.

For Airalo eSIMs, the links below will automatically get you the Phone Travel Wiz exclusive offers available – entering a code upon checkout is not necessary.

Use code ADU123 for the best deals available when getting Nomad eSIMs (on the site or their apps), such as getting 3 USD off (even on top of current promotions)!

Use code PHONETRAVELWIZ for exclusive deals when getting Holafly eSIMs, AND get an additional 5% off!

Holafly and Nomad also have eSIMs covering all of Europe.

But honestly, the Eurolink eSIM is superior (but you can consider the Holafly Europe eSIM if you want unlimited data in 30+ countries).

VoLTE & VoWiFi in the European Union (EU)

VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) is available in the European Union (EU), and it is offered by most mobile operators (although some limit it to postpaid customers only). VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) is not as widely available.

5G NR in the European Union (EU)

Sunrise from Switzerland was the first mobile operator to launch standalone 5G NR in Europe (2019). However, it is not part of the European Union. Select mobile operators in Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia & Spain allow prepaid customers to use 5G NR, although even more countries have 5G NR for postpaid customers.

With some mobile operators, you need to purchase select (more expensive) plans to use 5G NR.

In a few, 5G NR access can be purchased as an add-on or booster, depending on what the mobile operator calls it.

European Union (EU) Prepaid SIM Cards

I will be covering 30 countries in this guide.

While I would love it if you read this whole guide, it has more than 35k words.

Moreover, you may not even visit all these countries, so I do not blame you for just wanting to focus on the country you will go to.

Therefore, I created this index so that you can jump to the country you are interested in (instead of having to scroll for ages).

If you are done reading about a country and want to read another one (let's say from Latvia to Slovakia), you can easily do so by jumping back to the index.

There will be a Jump back to the Index button at the end of each country section.

Austria Prepaid SIM Cards

Flag of Austria

In Austria, you have three mobile operators and various Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) offering prepaid services:

  • A1 Austria
  • Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile Austria)
  • Drei (3) Austria
Buying a SIM Card in Austria Guide (logos of Magenta Telekom, A1 & Drie/3)

I recommend going with A1 Austria or Drei (3) Austria. A1 has the best network and the fastest speeds. Drei has several unlimited data plans with reasonable speeds (30 Mbps/10 Mbps or 50 Mbps/20 Mbps) for only 30 EUR or 40 EUR.

Drei (3) Austria offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.

However, you first need to buy a regular SIM card (9.90 EUR) and then exchange it for an eSIM for 20 EUR, making the total 29.90 EUR – just for an eSIM.

That is just too expensive.

Moreover, note that the Austrian mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards.

Therefore, if you wish to get an eSIM for Austria without personal detail capturing, you can get the Austria (Viennetz Mobil) from Airalo (1 GB/7 days, 3 GB/30 days, 5 GB/30 days & 10 GB/30 days).

Vodafone Czech Republic is rather vague on whether it allows prepaid customers to use eSIM or not.

Well… I forgot to ask 💀 – but you still have other options.

O2 struck a special deal with Airalo, where you can get the Stay in Touch tourist offering as an eSIM through their platform before arriving in the Czech Republic.

Flag of Denmark

In Denmark, you have two Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) offering prepaid services:

  • Lebara Denmark
  • Lycamobile Denmark

Consider Lebara for free international calls from Denmark to 60 countries. Lycamobile offers more choices in plans.

You can get a Hungarian SIM card for 490 HUF from Yettel Hungary (formerly Telenor), 990 HUF from Magyar Telekom & 1500 HUF from Vodafone Hungary in their stores and from resellers, like kiosks. Yettel also has a data-only SIM card for 990 HUF. SIM cards no longer sold at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD).

Officially, Vodafone sells SIM cards for 500 HUF. However, they will never let you out of the store with just a SIM card – you always have to buy a plan or at least top up some credit.

Vodafone used to sell SIM cards at Budapest Airport.

However, its (partner) store has been moved to the Market Central mall near the airport.

For up-to-date HUF:your currency (let's say EUR) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
