Greece – the birthplace of democracy, the Olympic Games & the beginning of Philosophy.
The country has an impressive history, which is still visible throughout the country when exploring it.
Besides its history and culture, Greece is also a popular travel destination.
For some, especially the youth, it is an excellent destination for alcohol-fueled holidays.
For others, exploring its stunning nature is the main draw to the country.
Whatever you feel like doing in Greece, you certainly will not be bored – and want to share your experiences online.
But beware – international roaming can be expensive. Sometimes, it's like daylight robbery.
Luckily, using a local SIM card can make you avoid international roaming rates and instead enjoy local rates.
But, how much do SIM cards cost in Greece?
You can get a Greek SIM card for 5 EUR (5.90 USD) from COSMOTE, Vodafone & WIND in their stores. Sub-brand SIM cards (Frog Mobile, Q, Vodafone CU & What's Up) are also sold in their stores for the same price. SIM cards are also sold at airports, including Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH).
Special note for those from Ukraine: be sure to ask about special benefits for Ukrainians. Many mobile operators around Europe have waived fees for you or introduced exclusive plans, including free calls back to Ukraine. Слава Україні! 🇺🇦
Note: Frog Mobile, a COSMOTE MVNO, SIM cards are not sold in every COSMOTE store, so you may have to shop around to find them if you truly want one
Just looking at the SIM card prices, no mobile operator has a clear advantage because they all sell them for the same nice price.
Of course, some are better than the others, but there is (luckily) no mobile operator that is so bad that you should avoid them at all costs in Greece.
But there are still some advantages of going with a particular mobile operator than another.
And I will tell you about that today.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Greece. Let’s go.

Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.

Can You Use Your Phone in Greece?
Greece uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Greece. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).
Traditional European frequencies are used in Greece, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 and 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).
The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU regions 1 and 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Greece.
If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Greece or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Greece (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE and 5G NR.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Greece
Greece has three mobile operators, three sub-brands and one Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) easily accessible to travelers offering prepaid services:
- COSMOTE Greece
- Vodafone Greece
- WIND Greece
- Frog Mobile (COSMOTE Greece MVNO)
- Q Greece (WIND sub-brand)
- Vodafone CU (Vodafone Greece sub-brand)
- What's Up (COSMOTE sub-brand)
The following frequencies are used in Greece:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Greece, check out this page by Will My Phone Work (may be outdated or inaccurate at times).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
A Note about Tazamobile

In the previous version of this guide, I included Tazamobile – a Vodafone Greece MVNO.
While it does have reasonable plans with attractive international call rates, it may not be the best option for travelers.
Tazamobile SIM cards are sold by the Taza van that moves from location every day.

It does not make sense for tourists to chase a van that does not even come to popular attractions in Greece.
Moreover, the other Greek mobile operators, including Vodafone itself, have similar prices for plans as Tazamobile does, so it is not worth it to hunt that van.

As a result, Tazamobile will not be covered in this guide.
A Note about Top-Up (Telecommunication) Taxes in Greece
A 12% tax is charged on all top-ups in Greece.
Unlike VAT (Value Added Tax, similar to GST (Goods and Services Tax)), which is included in all prices in Greece (as per EU law), the 12% telecommunications tax is charged after topping up.
This means that your 10 EUR recharge will leave you with 8.80 EUR.
Below is an overview of actual credit left after recharging for reference:
Top-Up | Credit After 12% Tax |
---|---|
10 EUR | 8.80 EUR |
12 EUR | 10.56 EUR |
15 EUR | 13.25 EUR |
20 EUR | 17.60 EUR |
30 EUR | 26.40 EUR |
40 EUR | 35.20 EUR |
50 EUR | 44 EUR |
100 EUR | 88 EUR |
Let's just say I was rather surprised I did not have enough credit to buy a plan the first time I topped up my Vodafone SIM card in Greece 🥲.
VoLTE & VoWiFi in Greece
Both VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) are available in Greece. All Greek mobile operators offer VoLTE, but not VoWiFi.
This means that your phone does not have to downgrade to 2G or 3G when making a call in Greece (unlike mobile operators that do not support VoLTE).
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE and VoWiFi in Greece:
- COSMOTE Greece
- Vodafone Greece
- Frog Mobile
- Vodafone CU
- What's Up Greece
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE only in Greece:
- WIND Greece
- Q Greece
VoWiFi is, as the name implies, calling on a WiFi connection as opposed to on a cellular network.
5G NR in Greece
Commercial 5G NR has been available in Greece since December 2020. It is available on the COSMOTE, Vodafone & WIND networks. 5G NR is offered to prepaid customers (including the sub-brands Q, Vodafone CU & What's Up). Frog Mobile does not have 5G NR access (yet).
Best SIM Card in Greece
Best eSIM in Greece
COSMOTE and What's Up offer eSIMs to prepaid customers.
Vodafone Greece also has eSIMs, but it is unknown whether they are offered to prepaid customers as well.
I will ask Vodafone about this March (2022) when I revisit Greece 🇬🇷😎.
As promised, I would ask the mobile operators if they offer eSIM to prepaid customers – they do not 😔.
WIND Greece, Frog Mobile, Q Greece & Vodafone CU, have no eSIMs – not even for postpaid customers (where applicable).
Note that the Greek mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards (will be discussed later).
Therefore, if you wish to get an eSIM for Greece without personal detail capturing, you can get the Greece (Meraki) eSIMs from Airalo.

You have these four options:
- Greece/Meraki 1 GB eSIM for 7 days
- Greece/Meraki 3 GB eSIM for 30 days
- Greece/Meraki 5 GB eSIM for 30 days
- Greece/Meraki 10 GB eSIM for 30 days
For Airalo eSIMs, the links above will automatically get you the Phone Travel Wiz exclusive offers available – a code is not necessary.
Or you can get Greece eSIMs from Nomad.

Use code ADU123 for the best deals available when getting Nomad eSIMs (on the site or their apps) and get 3 USD off (even on top of current promotions)!

Finally, you can get Greece eSIMs from Holafly if you prefer unlimited data plans and do not mind paying a bit more for this advantage:

With these eSIMs, you can skip Greece's SIM card registration scheme entirely and use it immediately upon arriving in Greece!
- Find out about the best local eSIMs, travel eSIMs & travel SIM cards for every country (lookup tool)
If you plan on visiting other neighboring European nations, consider the Eurolink eSIM (six variants: 1 GB/7 days, 3 GB/30 days, 5 GB/30 days, 10 GB/30 days, 50 GB/90 days & 100 GB/180 days) in Cyprus and these other countries:

1 on 3G only
With the Eurolink eSIM, you can save a lot of money by skipping the initial SIM card costs per country you visit – averaging 10.78 USD/country in Europe!
- Check out my Airalo Eurolink eSIM review (tested in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia & Spain)
Holafly and Nomad also have eSIMs covering all of the European Union (and more).
But honestly, the Eurolink eSIM is superior (but you can consider the Holafly Europe eSIM if you want unlimited data in 30+ countries – just do not forget about code PHONETRAVELWIZ if you go with Holafly).
TIP: Check out my eSIM lookup tool for an overview of local mobile operators offering eSIMs to prepaid customers and travel eSIMs I use and love (for eSIMs in Greece and eSIMs worldwide).

SIM Card Registration in Greece
SIM card registration with your passport information is mandatory in Greece. It will often be done at the point of sale.
- Find out which countries have a SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)
In the larger cities of Greece (Athens, Patres, Thessaloniki, etc.) you will notice employees from the mobile operators walking around trying to sell SIM cards (they often look like young students).
These are official salespeople from the mobile operators and not a bunch of scammers, so you can trust them.
In fact, some stores will even sent you back to the street sellers if you wish to buy a prepaid SIM card (happened to me with Vodafone in 2022, ha).
As SIM card registration is mandatory in Greece, the salespeople will have a machine to scan your passport or ID to fulfill the regulatory requirements.
Unlike buying your SIM card from a third-party reseller (like a kiosk, newsstand, or convenience store), SIM card activation and registration is close to instantly when done by a street seller.
Do note that the salespeople on the street may not sell the lower-priced plans mentioned in this guide.
Moreover, some may activate unnecessary services that may deduct credit from each recharge unknowingly (which I experienced firsthand back in 2015 🥲).
April 2022 update: things seem to have changed. Nowadays, they offer MUCH more perks on the streets than what advertised on the sites of the mobile operators!
EU Roaming in Greece

Greece is part of the European Union (EU).
Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Greece.
This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase a Greek SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.
However, conditions do apply. Mobile operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP).
In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and Nordics), mobile operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.
Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your mobile operator offers free roaming while in Greece or if restrictions apply.
Roaming in the EU with Greek SIM Cards
Greece and the Greek mobile operators have largely adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on.
However, some plans have an EU/EEA roaming cap.
Moreover, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period.
If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply. You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.

Currency in Greece
Greece uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide).
However, prices are often listed as just €. For example, 25 EUR = €25.
For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 EUR = 1.15 USD
- 10 EUR = 10.75 USD
- 100 EUR = 107.50 USD
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say GBP – (British) Pound (Sterling)) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.
Their fees are MUCH lower than banks, and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Euros, my main currency, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards. Open a Wise account FREE!

COSMOTE & What's Up Greece

COSMOTE is the largest mobile operator in Greece,
It also has the best overall network performance.
COSMOTE also has a sub-brand called What's Up Greece (just What's Up).

Initially, it was a youth-focused brand.
Nowadays, anyone, including the elderly, can get What's Up SIM cards 🤪.
The difference between COSMOTE and What's Up is that What's Up has slightly cheaper plans.
It also offers perks and goodies that are interesting to the (Greek) youth (you may not be able to take advantage of these perks as a short-term visitor).
There is no difference between the two brands besides the COSMOTE- and What's Up-specific plans.
What's Up customers have full access to the COSMOTE network, including 5G NR access.
COSMOTE (and What's Up) use(s) the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)
- VoLTE: Yes
- VoWiFi: Yes

SIM Card Price – COSMOTE & What's Up Greece

COSMOTE SIM cards are sold at airports (through ConnectPhone), like Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), but What's Up SIM cards are not.
It is also possible to buy COSMOTE and What's Up SIM cards from other dealers, including kiosks, convenience stores & small grocery stores throughout Greece.
However, SIM card activation can take a few days when done through these third parties, so you are better off getting your SIM card in a COSMOTE or Germanos store.

Vodafone Greece & Vodafone CU

Vodafone Greece, just Vodafone, is the second-largest mobile operator in Greece.
It is, together with WIND Greece, the oldest mobile operator in the country.
Vodafone also has a sub-brand called Vodafone CU.

It is a youth-focused brand.
Nowadays, anyone, including the elderly, can get Vodafone CU SIM cards 🤪.
The difference between Vodafone and Vodafone CU is that Vodafone CU has slightly cheaper plans.
It also offers perks and goodies that are interesting to the (Greek) youth (you may not be able to take advantage of these perks as a short-term visitor).
There is no difference between the two brands besides the brand-specific plans.
Vodafone CU customers have full access to the Vodafone network, including 5G NR access.
Vodafone uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz

I asked – Vodafone (CU) eSIMs are only available to postpaid customers, unfortunately 😔.

Other Ways to Stay Connected When Traveling in Greece
The cheapest way to get online in Greece is to get a SIM card from one of the mobile operators unless you have an EU/EEA SIM card and can roam for free in Greece.
However, local SIM cards are not your only method of staying online when abroad.
Below are some other options to consider.
International Roaming
Roaming is the most convenient way to stay connected.
You do not have to buy a new SIM card, and people at home can easily reach you on your current phone number.
However, roaming has many downsides as well. It can be insanely expensive.
International/Travel SIM Cards
International SIM cards or travel SIM cards are SIM cards made for travelers.
The rates charged are often lower than international roaming, but they are almost always higher than what local mobile operators will charge you.
Get to know more about international and travel SIM cards.
Mobile Hotspots (Pocket WIFI)
Mobile hotspots, or pocket WIFI, are small devices that connect to the local mobile operators of the country you are visiting.
Mobile hotspots are ideal for families or those traveling in a large group, as they allow you to connect multiple devices to one hotspot without the need of each traveler having to buy a SIM card.
You can either buy a mobile hotspot or rent one.
Free WIFI Networks
Nothing beats free, right? Paying nothing to stay connected may be the best option.
Until you remember that free hotspots are not available everywhere (especially when on the move) and that free connections are often extremely slow.
Just make sure to protect your internet traffic with a VPN when connected to open WIFI connections. It is worth it.
The Preferred Way to Stay Connected When Traveling in Greece
Getting a SIM card from COSMOTE or What's Up would do you well when considering a Greek SIM card.
