Greece – the birthplace of democracy, the Olympic Games & the beginning of Philosophy.
The country has an impressive history, which is still visible throughout the country when exploring it.
Besides its history and culture, Greece is also a popular travel destination.
For some, especially the youth, it is an excellent destination for alcohol-fueled holidays.
For others, exploring its stunning nature is the main draw to the country.
Whatever you feel like doing in Greece, you certainly will not be bored – and want to share your experiences online.
But beware – international roaming can be expensive. Sometimes, it's like daylight robbery.
Luckily, using a local SIM card can make you avoid international roaming rates and instead enjoy local rates.
But, how much do SIM cards cost in Greece?
You can get a Greek SIM card for 5 EUR (5.50 USD) from COSMOTE, Vodafone & WIND in their stores. Sub-brand SIM cards (Frog Mobile, Q, Vodafone CU & What's Up) are also sold in their stores for the same price. SIM cards are also sold at airports, including Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH).
Note: Frog Mobile, a COSMOTE MVNO, SIM cards are not sold in every COSMOTE store, so you may have to shop around to find them if you truly want one
Just looking at the SIM card prices, no mobile operator has a clear advantage because they all sell them for the same nice price.
Of course, some are better than the others, but there is (luckily) no mobile operator that is so bad that you should avoid them at all costs in Greece.
But there are still some advantages of going with a particular mobile operator than another.
And I will tell you about that today.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Greece. Let’s go.

Anyone 18 years or older living in or visiting Greece can buy a Greek SIM card from COSMOTE (+What's Up & Frog Mobile), Vodafone (CU) & WIND (F2G + Q) in their stores or from authorized resellers with no restrictions.

- Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)

Moreover, you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Greece).
Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.
Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Greece?

The sub-brands (Q, Vodafone CU & What's Up) are also sold in their stores – Frog Mobile is not available in all COSMOTE stores. Can You Use Your Phone in Greece?
Greece uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Greece. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).
Traditional European frequencies are used in Greece, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 and 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).
The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 and 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Greece.
If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Greece or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Greece (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE and 5G NR.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Greece
Greece has three mobile operators, three sub-brands and one Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) easily accessible to travelers offering prepaid services:
- COSMOTE Greece
- Vodafone Greece
- Nova Greece
- Frog Mobile (COSMOTE Greece MVNO)
- Q Greece (Nova Greece sub-brand)
- Vodafone CU (Vodafone Greece sub-brand)
- What's Up (COSMOTE sub-brand)
The following frequencies are used in Greece:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Greece, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
A Note about Tazamobile

In the previous version of this guide, I included Tazamobile – a Vodafone Greece MVNO.
While it does have reasonable plans with attractive international call rates, it may not be the best option for travelers.
Tazamobile SIM cards are sold by the Taza van that moves from location every day.

It does not make sense for tourists to chase a van that does not even come to popular attractions in Greece.
Moreover, the other Greek mobile operators, including Vodafone itself, have similar prices for plans as Tazamobile does, so it is not worth it to hunt that van.

As a result, Tazamobile will not be covered in this guide.
A Note about Top-Up (Telecommunication) Taxes in Greece
A 12% tax is charged on all top-ups in Greece.
Unlike VAT (Value Added Tax, similar to GST (Goods and Services Tax)), which is included in all prices in Greece (as per EU law), the 12% telecommunications tax is charged after topping up.
This means that your 10 EUR recharge will leave you with 8.80 EUR.
Below is an overview of actual credit left after recharging for reference:
Top-Up | Credit After 12% Tax |
---|---|
10 EUR | 8.80 EUR |
12 EUR | 10.56 EUR |
15 EUR | 13.25 EUR |
20 EUR | 17.60 EUR |
30 EUR | 26.40 EUR |
40 EUR | 35.20 EUR |
50 EUR | 44 EUR |
100 EUR | 88 EUR |
Let's just say I was rather surprised I did not have enough credit to buy a plan the first time I topped up my Vodafone SIM card in Greece 🥲.
VoLTE & VoWiFi in Greece
Both VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) are available in Greece. All Greek mobile operators offer VoLTE, but not VoWiFi.
This means that your phone does not have to downgrade to 2G or 3G when making a call in Greece (unlike mobile operators that do not support VoLTE).
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE and VoWiFi in Greece:
- COSMOTE Greece
- Vodafone Greece
- Frog Mobile
- Vodafone CU
- What's Up Greece
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE only in Greece:
- Nova Greece
- Q Greece
VoWiFi is, as the name implies, calling on a WiFi connection as opposed to on a cellular network.
5G NR in Greece
Commercial 5G NR has been available in Greece since December 2020. It is available on the COSMOTE, Vodafone & WIND networks. 5G NR is offered to prepaid customers (including the sub-brands Q, Vodafone CU & What's Up). Frog Mobile does not have 5G NR access (yet).
Best SIM Card in Greece
Greek SIM Card Reviews
When I revisited Greece, I tried out three Greek SIM cards again: COSMOTE Greece, Vodafone CU Greece & Nova Greece.
While I give my opinions and recommendations in this guide, I share my personal experiences in my reviews (else… they would not be reviews 🤪).
I recommend reading the reviews after deciding which Greek SIM card will be the best for you, after reading more about the SIM card you are interested in, or after your personal comparison.
At the end of each SIM card section, I will remind you and link to the review of the said SIM card so that you can flow easily to the next part of your assessment.
Best eSIM in Greece
COSMOTE and What's Up offer eSIMs to prepaid customers.
Vodafone Greece also has eSIMs, but it is unknown whether they are offered to prepaid customers as well.
I will ask Vodafone about this March (2022) when I revisit Greece 🇬🇷😎.
As promised, I would ask the mobile operators if they offer eSIM to prepaid customers – they do not 😔.
Nova Greece, Frog Mobile, Q Greece & Vodafone CU, have no eSIMs – not even for postpaid customers (where applicable).
Note that the Greek mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards (will be discussed later).
However, you can also get a travel eSIM from various eSIM providers.
The list below is not exhaustive – many more providers have eSIMs for Greece.
But these are the ones I have tried and had pleasant experiences with.
Moreover, they are reasonably priced, which I find very important (you will not see me recommending an eSIM I would not buy myself).
So here are the 13 best eSIMs for Greece:
- Greek mobile operators (one offer eSIMs to prepaid customers – read more in my Greece SIM card buying guide)
- Airalo Meraki Mobile eSIM with six choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (best value for money)
- Holafly Greece eSIM with unlimited data for 5 to 90 days (unlimited data eSIMs)
- Nomad Greece eSIM with 11 choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (best value for money… too)
- Airalo Eurolink eSIM with 5G NR access in Greece with six choices between 1 GB and 100 GB (best value for money for 39 European countries) – read my ongoing Airalo Eurolink eSIM review too!
- Holafly Europe eSIM with unlimited data for 5 to 60 days (unlimited data eSIMs for 33 European countries)
- Nomad Europe eSIM with 13 choices between 1 GB and 40 GB (the best of both worlds in terms of pricing and performance for 35 European countries)
- SimOptions Europe eSIMs with seven choices between 8 GB and 24 GB (choice from multiple providers + calling & texting options (the only one in this list))
- Ubigi Europe Plans (most extensive Europe coverage (52 countries), with a liberal definition of Europe in your favor)
- Airalo Discover Global eSIM with five choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (reasonable global coverage (85+ countries) at attractive prices) – read my ongoing Airalo Discover Global eSIM review too!
- AIS eSIM2FLY Global eSIM through SimOptions with one 6 GB option (eSIM with the most 5G NR supported countries (50/123) at a reasonable price but with a short validity)
- Nomad Global eSIM with three choices between 1 GB and 5 GB (extensive global coverage (110 countries) at high(er) prices)
- Ubigi World Plan (most extensive global coverage (175+ countries) at the highest prices)
Because this is the SIM card buying guide for Greece, I will not spend too much time about travel eSIMs here and throughout this guide (but I will still do here and there).
If you want to learn more about the best eSIMs for Greece, you better check out my Greece eSIM buying guide.
It is as helpful and comprehensive as this guide but about eSIMs instead 😜.

SIM Card Registration in Greece
SIM card registration with your passport information is mandatory in Greece. It will often be done at the point of sale.
- Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)

In the larger cities of Greece (Athens, Patres, Thessaloniki, etc.) you will notice employees from the mobile operators walking around trying to sell SIM cards (they often look like young students).
These are official salespeople from the mobile operators and not a bunch of scammers, so you can trust them.
In fact, some stores will even sent you back to the street sellers if you wish to buy a prepaid SIM card (happened to me with Vodafone in 2022, ha).
As SIM card registration is mandatory in Greece, the salespeople will have a machine to scan your passport or ID to fulfill the regulatory requirements.
Unlike buying your SIM card from a third-party reseller (like a kiosk, newsstand, or convenience store), SIM card activation and registration is close to instantly when done by a street seller.
Do note that the salespeople on the street may not sell the lower-priced plans mentioned in this guide.
Moreover, some may activate unnecessary services that may deduct credit from each recharge unknowingly (which I experienced firsthand back in 2015 🥲).
April 2022 update: things seem to have changed. Nowadays, they offer MUCH more perks on the streets than what advertised on the sites of the mobile operators!
EU Roaming in Greece

Greece is part of the European Union (EU).
Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Greece.
This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase a Greek SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.
However, conditions do apply. Mobile operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP).
In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and Nordics), mobile operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.
Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your mobile operator offers free roaming while in Greece or if restrictions apply.
Roaming in the EU with Greek SIM Cards
Greece and the Greek mobile operators have largely adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on.
However, some plans have an EU/EEA roaming cap.
Moreover, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period.
If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply. You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.

Currency in Greece
Greece uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide).
However, prices are often listed as just €. For example, 25 EUR = €25.
For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 EUR = 1.10 USD
- 10 EUR = 11 USD
- 100 EUR = 109.75 USD
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say GBP – (British) Pound (Sterling)) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.
Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Australian Dollars and Euros, my main currencies, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards.
Greek Prepaid SIM Cards
Below, I will guide you through COSMOTE (+ What's Up Greece), Vodafone Greece (+ Vodafone CU), Nova Greece (+Q Greece) & Frog Mobile, and go through:
- Background information
- Mobile coverage
- SIM card types, prices, and availability
- Recharge / top-up information
- Combo plans, data plans, and special packs (such as social media packs)
With that being said, let’s see what Greece has to offer to us.
COSMOTE Greece & What's Up Greece

COSMOTE Greece is the largest mobile operator in Greece.
It also has the best overall network performance.
COSMOTE Greece also has a sub-brand called What's Up Greece (just What's Up).

Initially, it was a youth-focused brand.
Nowadays, anyone, including the elderly, can get What's Up SIM cards 🤪.
The difference between COSMOTE and What's Up is that What's Up has slightly cheaper plans.
It also offers perks and goodies that are interesting to the (Greek) youth (you may not be able to take advantage of these perks as a short-term visitor).
There is no difference between the two brands besides the COSMOTE- and What's Up-specific plans.
What's Up customers have full access to the COSMOTE network, including 5G NR access.
COSMOTE (and What's Up) use(s) the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)
- VoLTE: Yes
- VoWiFi: Yes

Coverage – COSMOTE & What's Up Greece
COSMOTE has the best 4G/LTE and 5G NR coverage in Greece.
This was also confirmed by Opensignal.

SIM Card Price – COSMOTE & What's Up Greece
You can get a COSMOTE or What's Up SIM card for 5 EUR in COSMOTE or Germanos (ΓΕΡΜΑΝΟΣ) stores. COSMOTE and What's Up street sellers will sell SIM cards too, although a plan purchase is required. COSMOTE SIM cards are sold at airports (through ConnectPhone), like Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), but What's Up SIM cards are not.
It is also possible to buy COSMOTE and What's Up SIM cards from other dealers, including kiosks, convenience stores & small grocery stores throughout Greece.
However, SIM card activation can take a few days when done through these third parties, so you are better off getting your SIM card in a COSMOTE or Germanos store.
- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)

It is also possible to get a COSMOTE or What's Up eSIM for 9.90 EUR (compared to 5 EUR for a regular SIM card.
COSMOTE and What's Up do not have a complete list of which devices are supported, except for stating that Huawei, iPhones & Samsung phones can use eSIM.
So I assume the standard phones are supported (Huawei P40 series, iPhone 11/12/13 series & Samsung (Galaxy (Note) (S)20 & 21 series).
Therefore, if you wish to get an eSIM for Greece without personal detail capturing, you can get Greece Meraki Mobile eSIMs from Airalo (six options):

- 1 GB/7 days – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
- 2 GB/15 days (new)
- 3 GB/30 days – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
- 5 GB/30 days – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
- 10 GB/30 days
- 20 GB/30 days (new)
Note: Phone Travel Wiz reader popularity ranking was updated in May based on data up to the 17th of May (2023 data only).
No idea what or who Airalo is? Check out my Airalo review, where I share my hands-on experience after using its eSIMs in more than 25 countries over four years.

If you plan on visiting other neighboring European nations, consider the Airalo Eurolink eSIM to be used in 39 European countries with six variants:
- 1 GB/7 days
- 3 GB/30 days – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
- 5 GB/30 days – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
- 10 GB/30 days – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
- 50 GB/90 days
- 100 GB/180 days
Note: Phone Travel Wiz reader popularity ranking was updated in May based on data up to the 17th of May (2023 data only).

Do you think the map above is nice, but you want a country list instead (because you do not recognize the countries on a map🗿)? You can find it in my Airalo review!
By the way, you get free 5G NR access in 22 of the 39 supported countries!
I have used the Airalo Eurolink eSIM in 11 countries so far, and my goal is to test it in all supported countries.
- Be sure to check out my Airalo Eurolink eSIM review for my insights!

Many more travel eSIMs will perform well in Greece.
You can read about them in my Best Greece eSIMs Compared guide for an in-depth comparison.

Note that COSMOTE and What's Up offer VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G)) if your phone supports it and you have enabled it in the settings.
Oh, you can also use VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi).

My Review – COSMOTE & What's Up Greece
I had the chance to try out What's Up in March 2022.
Although I would probably have gone for COSMOTE itself, it has a SIM card shortage.
I had to visit about five stores before finding one with SIM cards in stock.
And as it was a Saturday, most stores were closing within an hour… so I could not be picky 🤪.
Either way, What's Up has slightly cheaper options than COSMOTE itself while having full access to the COSMOTE network.
Except for 5G NR, it seemed… I did not have any 5G NR reception during my weekend in Greece, even though it is advertised that What's Up customers can use it.
Even then, I had a pleasant experience What's Up.
You can read my What's Up review here.

However, it is unclear if eSIMs are available for prepaid customers too.
Nor is it known if Vodafone CU has eSIMs too.
I will ask Vodafone about this March (2022) when I revisit Greece 🇬🇷😎.
I asked – Vodafone (CU) eSIMs are only available to postpaid customers, unfortunately 😔.
Note that the Greek mobile operators require your identification (passport) for (future) eSIMs and for physical SIM card.

My Review – COSMOTE & What's Up Greece
I had the chance to try out Vodafone CU in March 2022.
Although I would probably have gone for Vodafone itself, the salesperson I got my SIM card from only had Vodafone CU SIM cards.
In 2015, I had a bad experience with Vodafone because the salesperson enabled some features that took credit from each recharge, forcing me to make additional top-ups.
Remember when very early in this guide where I said salespeople on the streets sell Vodafone (CU) SIM cards and that they are legit?
They are – and they actually sell plans with waaaaay better data allowances than advertised on Vodafone (CU)'s site and on offline channels.
But you have to be aware of these deals… and they are not available all year round.
Hence, I only mention the official advertised plans in this guide.
But you can learn about the underground plans in my Vodafone CU review.
🛑 Before you continue… 🛑
You should NOT buy a Vodafone (CU) SIM card on a weekend if (1) you are only staying for the weekend or (2) love fast speeds (like myself).
Vodafone HQ has to manually enable 4G/LTE, which is done on a business day.
Guess who bought a Vodafone SIM card on the weekend, with stores closed on Sundays? 🥲
You can read about my experiences here.
Oh, by the way, if you love fights, the Vodafone store I visited had employees and two customers fighting each other. Things can get passionate with Vodafone, lmao.

Nova Greece (formerly Wind) & Q Greece

Nova Greece, just Nova, is the smallest mobile operator in Greece.
It is, together with Vodafone Greece, the oldest mobile operator in the country.
There was another mobile operator called Q Telecom until WIND purchased it in the past.
Since then, it has become a budget prepaid line of Nova.
Nowadays, Q Telecom is simply known as Q.

The difference between Nova and Q is that Q has slightly cheaper plans.
There is no difference between the two brands besides the brand-specific plans.
Q customers have full access to the Nova network, including 5G NR access.
Nova uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)
- VoLTE: Yes
- VoWiFi: No

Coverage – Nova Greece (formerly Wind) & Q Greece
Nova has extensive coverage throughout Greece.
4G/LTE is available almost anywhere.
Below is Nova's coverage map produced by Speedtest:
SIM Card Price – Nova Greece & Q Greece
You can get a Nova, called F2G, or Q SIM card for 5 EUR in Nova stores. Nova and Q street sellers will sell SIM cards too, although a plan purchase is required. Nova and Q SIM cards are sold at airports (through ConnectPhone), like Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH).

It is also possible to buy Nova and Q SIM cards from other dealers, including kiosks, convenience stores & small grocery stores throughout Greece.
However, SIM card activation can take a few days when done through these third parties, so you are better off getting your SIM card in a Nova or Q store.

- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)

Nova and Q have no eSIMs – not even for postpaid customers.
Note that the Greek mobile operators require your identification (passport) for (future) eSIMs and for physical SIM card.

Frog Mobile

Frog Mobile is a COSMOTE MVNO (or somewhat of a COSMOTE sub-brand).
In the past, it was the cheapest option you had for being on the COSMOTE network.

However, it differentiates itself by offering attractive international call rates.
That is why Frog Mobile is popular with the expat community in Greece.
