SIM Cards in Sweden: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Sweden – known for having the ICEHOTEL, IKEA & Abba.

The country is also known for its Swedish design, Spotify & PewDiePie.

But what can you do in Sweden? If you are into ABBA, make sure to visit the ABB museum.

Natural parks, like Abisko National Park, are stunning too.

And the old-school architecture throughout the country cannot and will not be missed when strolling around the country.

What also will not be missed is the expensive roaming bill you will see on your phone bill when you are back home.

International roaming can be expensive. Local SIM cards, like a Swedish one, are much cheaper than roaming.

Fortunately, SIM cards are not too expensive in Sweden.

You can get a Swedish SIM card for 45 SEK (4.10 USD) from Comviq (by Tele2), 49 SEK (4.50 USD) from Telenor & 59 SEK (5.40 USD) from Telia in their stores (except for Comviq) or resellers, like 7-Eleven (especially for Comviq). SIM cards are also sold at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) and Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT).

While the Nordics and Scandinavia are not known for their low cost of living (I can tell you – I lived in Denmark for 3.5 years), mobile data costs are not too bad in Sweden.

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Sweden. Let's go.

What is the Best SIM Card in Sweden?

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Sweden, I recommend going with Telia or Comviq by Tele2. Telia is, overall, the best mobile operator and has the fastest speeds. However, it does not offer free EU/EEA roaming without registration. Comviq has a large variety of plans and does offer EU/EEA roaming.

So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?

Sweden has three mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:

  • Telia Sweden
  • Tele2 Sweden (with Comviq)
  • Telenor Sweden

Where Can You Buy an Swedish SIM Card (+Costs)?

You can get a Swedish SIM card in Telia and Telenor stores. Resellers, like convenience stores and grocery stores, also sell SIM cards (especially for Comviq by Tele2). Some Swedish airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).

You can expect to pay the following for Swedish SIM cards:

  • Telia Sweden: 249 SEK
  • Comviq by Tele2 Sweden: 45 SEK
  • Telenor Sweden: 49 SEK

Note that SIM cards can be more expensive than those listed above when purchased at an airport.

(Travel) eSIMs for Sweden

In recent years, (travel) eSIMs have become extremely popular.

Especially after Apple made iPhones (14- & 15 series) sold in the United States eSIM-only, forcing its users to use eSIMs – even when abroad.

As a result, the adoption of eSIM technology by mobile operators worldwide rose impressively quickly.

Currently, only Comviq by Tele2 Sweden offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.

But if you purchase an eSIM from any of these mobile operators, you must comply with Sweden's SIM card registration regulations.

Suppose you do not wish to do so for privacy reasons (for example) or want to be connected immediately without paying for an overpriced SIM card (or eSIM) sold at an Swedish airport. In that case, you may consider getting a travel eSIM for Sweden.

In my Sweden eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide (even in Sweden).

Buying an eSIM for Sweden Guide (logos of Holafly, Nomad, Eurolink, Discover+, Vän, Alosim & Airalo)

Surprisingly, travel eSIMs can be cheaper than an Swedish SIM card or eSIM in specific scenarios.

Moreover, Europe-wide and global eSIM options are also available at competitive prices (without having to deal with expensive international roaming rates).

In this Sweden SIM card buying guide (the one you are reading), I will stick to the local SIM cards and eSIM, but you can read my Sweden eSIM buying guide for more information about travel eSIMs covering the country.

But here is a quick overview already + applicable discount codes if you are interested in purchasing a travel eSIM for Sweden:

  • Airalo: Vän (Sweden only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS)
  • Alosim: Sweden
  • Holafly: Sweden & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls
  • Nomad: Sweden, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant)

Here are some discount codes to sweeten the deal:

  • Airalo: APR15 for 15% off (if you have never bought an Airalo eSIM before). Otherwise, APR10 for 10% off (for existing users) – only the first 3000 users can redeem either discount code)
  • Alosim: PTW for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
  • Holafly: PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
  • Nomad: ADU123 for 3 USD off (on your first-ever Nomad order only)

Once again, check out my Sweden eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.

The eSIM guide is as comprehensive as this SIM card buying guide, but it solely focuses on travel eSIMs (while the guide you are reading focuses on local SIM cards and eSIMs for prepaid users (where applicable).
