SIM Cards in the Baltics: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

The Baltics – known for its forests, beaches & cozy (old) towns.

Consisting of Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania, the region is not as popular as Western Europe or Southern Europe.

However, the Baltics still have a lot to offer – and it is a comparatively affordable region too (looking at you, Scandinavia).

While your intention of visiting this region will differ from other travelers, you probably want to stay connected.

Else you would not have clicked on this guide 😏.

But as you probably know, international roaming can be expensive – also in the Baltics.

Especially if you have a non-European Union SIM card.

That is why you should get a local SIM card per Baltic state you visit to save the most money.

Moreover, the cost of mobile data is low in the Baltics too.

But what about free EU/EEA roaming?

If you are coming from another EU/EEA nation, you can almost always use your SIM card for free in Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania without paying extra roaming fees.

However, as mobile data rates are so low in the Baltics, some mobile operators have been exempt from this law to prevent abuse.

Which is why you may not use all Estonian SIM cards in Latvia, Lithuania, or other EU/EEA countries, for example.

But as you can often get a SIM card for just 1 EUR (1.50 USD) in the Baltics states, you will not break the bank by getting a new SIM card for each Baltic nation you visit.

So, what are your options in the Baltics? Which SIM card is the best? How much do they cost? And what plans are available?

This guide will answer all these questions for every individual Baltic state.

Yes, this is the ultimate guide to buying a SIM card in the Baltics. Let's do this.

Best Prepaid SIM Cards in the Baltics

With only three different countries in the Baltics, I can easily summarize which SIM card is the best for each Baltic state.

Go with any Telia sub-brands (Diil, Simpel, or Super) in Estonia, as Telia has the best overall network. For Latvia, stick with LMT – also for the best network experience. Go with Tele2 (Pildyk) or Telia (Extra or Ežys) in Lithuania, with Tele2 having the fastest speeds.

That is quite an impressive summary, right? And all within 300 characters 😎.

For your convenience, there is a table of the best SIM cards in each Baltics state:

CountryRecommended SIM Card(s)
EstoniaDiil, Simpel & Super (all by Telia Estonia)
LatviaLMT
LithuaniaPildyk by Tele2 Lithuania & Extra + Ežys by Telia Lithuania

Why are the mobile operators mentioned above the best in the stated countries?

You will have to read along to find out 😏.

SIM Card Prices in the Baltics

Now you know which mobile operators are the best in the Baltics.

But how much to SIM cards cost in this region?

Since the Baltics consists of only three countries, it will be easy to summarize this for you.

You can get a Baltic SIM card for between 0.95 EUR (1 USD) to 9.95 EUR (10.65 USD) in Estonia, 0.99 EUR (1.05 USD) to 24.89 EUR (26.60 USD) & 0.99 EUR to 5.50 EUR (5.80 EUR) in Lithuania. However, you will often spend around 3 EUR (3.20 USD) per SIM card per country (but the average is 4.10 EUR (4.15 USD).

If you do not know how much 1 EUR is in your currency, worry not.

Wise has a nifty tool keeping track of currencies worldwide in real-time.

So if you want to know how much 10 EUR is in (British) Pound (Sterling), simply select the currencies on the Wise currency converter tool.

If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.

Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).

I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Australian Dollars and Euros, my main currencies, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards.

Best eSIMs in the Baltics

While mobile operators in Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania have eSIMs, they are (currently) not offered to prepaid customers).

Therefore, if you wish to get an eSIM for the Baltics, you can get eSIMs from Airalo or Nomad.

This way, you can avoid the hassle of obtaining a SIM card or eSIM and just purchase an eSIM on an app.

Use code ADU123 for the best deals available when getting Nomad eSIMs (on the site or their apps) and get 3 USD/2.70 EUR/2.40 GBP/4.05 CAD off (even on top of (some) ongoing promotions)!

But during certain promotions where you are required to enter a code for a discount (let's say Tuesdays (web sales only) or public holidays), the discount you get for these special promotions will be more than the 3 USD off with codes ADU123. I suggest using those codes instead for extra savings – I will not blame you for it 😏.

Below are the eSIMs I recommend:

VoLTE & VoWiFi in the Baltics

VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) is available in the Baltics, and it is offered by some mobile operators. However, VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) is barely available.

Below is a list of Baltic countries with VoLTE and VoWiFi, and which mobile operator offers the features:

  • Estonia: Elisa Estonia + Zen by Elisa Estonia (VoLTE & VoWiFi) & Dill + Simpel + Super by Telia Estonia (VoLTE)
  • Latvia: LMT (VoLTE), Zelta Zivtina (ZZ) by Tele2 Latvia (VoLTE) & Bitė Latvia (VoLTE)
  • Lithuania: Pildyk by Tele2 Lithuania (VoLTE), Extra + Ežys by Telia Lithuania & Labas by Bitė Lithuania

5G NR in the Baltics

5G NR Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

Commercial 5G NR has been available in Latvia since July 2019. The other countries launched 5G NR in 2021 and 2022. Only LMT from Latvia allows prepaid customers to use 5G NR. It is unknown if Elisa Estonia (+ZeN), Tele2 Estonia (+Smart), Telia Lithuania (Extra & Ežys) & Bitė Lithuania (Labas) will allow their prepaid customers to use 5G NR upon launch (but probably not).

Baltic Prepaid SIM Cards

I will be covering Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania in this guide and will:

  • introduce you to the mobile operators in each country
  • give my SIM card recommendation(s) for each country
  • give you eSIM recommendations

  • tell you how much SIM cards cost and where to get them
  • explain where to get top-up vouchers, how to top-up & how to check your balance
  • give you the recommended plan(s) by the recommended mobile operator(s)
  • provide a short recap of what you need to know about SIM cards in the country

With that being said, let's see what the Baltics have to offer to us
