Slovakia – known for its castles, folk dancing & landscapes.
Apparently, the country has the highest concentration of castles worldwide.
So, castle lovers – you know where to go to.
But besides castles, what else can you do in Slovakia? A lot.
Many churches, like The Blue Church, are worth visiting.
If you love nature and hiking, head to the mountains, and you will love the landscapes.
And if you are into skiing, skip Austria and ski in Slovakia – it will be much cheaper.
As you can see, the country has a lot to offer.
What it cannot offer you, unless you have an EU/EEA SIM card, is low international roaming rates.
International roaming can be expensive, which is why I always recommend local SIM cards, like a Slovak one, so that you can enjoy local rates.
And oh boy – SIM cards are inexpensive in Slovakia.
You can get a Slovak SIM card for 1 EUR (1.05 USD) or 2 EUR (2.15 USD) from Orange, 2 EUR from O2, 4 EUR (4.25 USD) from 4ka (by Swan Mobile) & 5 EUR (5.30 USD) from Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) in their stores or post offices. SIM cards are sold near Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) at the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall.
Those prices are not too bad, right?
What may be bad are the high mobile data rates in the country (for Central- and Eastern European standards).
But the data-featured plans will not break the bank (unlike some countries in the Caribbean).
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Slovakia. Let's get started, shall we?

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Slovakia?
Anyone living in or visiting Slovakia can buy a Slovak SIM card from Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange, O2, 4ka (by Swan Mobile) & many MVNOs with no restrictions.
You do have to comply with the SIM card registration regulations.
- Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)

Moreover, you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Slovakia).
Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.
Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Slovakia?

You can get a Slovak SIM card in Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange, O2 & 4ka (by Swan Mobile) stores. Resellers, like post offices, also sell SIM cards (especially for 4ka and the MVNOs). They are also sold near Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) at the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall).
You can expect to pay the following for Slovak SIM cards:
- Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile): 5 EUR
- Orange Slovakia: 1 EUR & 2 EUR
- O2 Slovakia: 2 EUR
- 4ka (by Swan Mobile): 4 EUR
- MVNOs (like Tesco Mobile Slovakia): being added later
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say GBP) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.

Can You Use Your Phone in Slovakia?
Slovakia uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Slovakia. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).
Traditional European frequencies are used in Slovakia, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 and 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).
The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 and 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Slovakia.
If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Slovakia or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Slovakia (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE and 5G NR.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Slovakia
Slovakia has four mobile operators and various Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs – being added later) offering prepaid services:
- Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)
- Orange Slovakia
- O2 Slovakia
- 4ka (by Swan Mobile)
The following frequencies are used in Slovakia:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 1800 MHz (n3), 2100 MHz (n1) & 3500 MHz-3700 MHz (n78)
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Slovakia, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
VoLTE & VoWiFi in Slovakia
Both VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) are available in Slovakia. All Slovak mobile operators offer VoLTE, but not VoWiFi.
This means that your phone does not have to downgrade to 2G or 3G when making a call in Slovakia (unlike mobile operators that do not support VoLTE).
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE and VoWiFi in Slovakia:
- Orange Slovakia
- O2 Slovakia
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE only in Slovakia:
- Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)
- 4ka (by Swan Mobile)
VoWiFi is, as the name implies, calling on a WiFi connection as opposed to on a cellular network.
5G NR in Slovakia

Commercial 5G NR has been available in Slovakia since December 2021. It is available on the Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange, O2 & 4ka (by Swan Mobile) networks. Slovak Telekom and 4ka offer 5G NR to prepaid customers – O2 does too for a limited time 1. Orange does not offer 5G NR to prepaid customers – The MVNOs do not have 5G NR access yet.
1 I managed to get 5G NR access in March 2022
Best SIM Card in Slovakia
Best eSIM in Slovakia
Slovak Telekom, Orange Slovakia, O2 Slovakia & 4ka (by Swan Mobile) offer eSIMs to prepaid customers – all for the same price as a regular physical SIM card.
Note that the Slovak mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards (will be discussed later).
However, you can also get a travel eSIM from various eSIM providers.
The list below is not exhaustive – many more providers have eSIMs for Slovakia.
But these are the ones I have tried and had pleasant experiences with.
Moreover, they are reasonably priced, which I find very important (you will not see me recommending an eSIM I would not buy myself).
So here are the 16 best eSIMs for Slovakia:
- Slovak mobile operators (four offer eSIMs to prepaid customers – read more in my Slovakia SIM card buying guide)
- Airalo Dobrý deň! eSIM with four choices between 1 GB and 10 GB (best value for money)
- Alosim Slovakia eSIM with four choices between 1 GB and 10 GB (priced roughly the same as Airalo with a bit more options – use code PTW for 5% off)
- Holafly Slovakia eSIM with unlimited data for 5 to 90 days (unlimited data eSIMs) + ability to make and receive calls (new – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off)
- Nomad Slovakia eSIM with ten choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (best value for money… too – use code ADU123 for 3 USD off)
- Airalo Eurolink eSIM with six choices between 1 GB and 100 GB (best value for money for 39 European countries) – read my ongoing Airalo Eurolink eSIM review too!
- Alosim Europe eSIM with five choices between 1 GB and 10 GB (priced roughly the same as Airalo with worse coverage)
- Holafly Europe eSIM with 5G NR access in Slovakia with unlimited data for 5 to 60 days (unlimited data eSIMs for 33 European countries) + ability to make and receive calls (new)
- Nomad Europe eSIM with 11 choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (the best of both worlds in terms of pricing and performance for 35 European countries)
- SimOptions Europe eSIMs with seven choices between 8 GB and 24 GB (choice from multiple mobile operators + calling & texting options (the only one in this list))
- Airalo Discover(+) eSIM (formerly Discover Global) with 12 choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (extensive global coverage (130+ countries) at attractive prices) + ability to make and receive calls & send and receive SMS (new) – read my ongoing Airalo Discover(+) (Global) eSIM review too!
- AIS eSIM2FLY Global eSIM through SimOptions with 5G NR access in Slovakia with one 6 GB option (eSIM with the most 5G NR supported countries (53/143) at a reasonable price but with a short validity)
- Nomad Global eSIM with six choices between 1 GB and 5 GB (extensive global coverage (109 or 139 countries) at high(er) prices – use code ADU123 for 3 USD off)
Because this is the SIM card buying guide for Slovakia, I will not spend too much time about travel eSIMs here and throughout this guide (but I will still do here and there).
If you want to learn more about the best eSIMs for Slovakia, you better check out my Slovakia eSIM buying guide.
It is as helpful and comprehensive as this guide but about eSIMs instead 😜.

SIM Card Registration in Slovakia
SIM card registration with your passport information is required in Slovakia. It will be done at the point of purchase.

EU Roaming in Slovakia

Slovakia is part of the European Union (EU).
Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Slovakia.
This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase a Slovak SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.
However, conditions do apply. Mobile operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP).
In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and Nordics), mobile operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.
Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your mobile operator offers free roaming while in Slovakia or if restrictions apply.
Roaming in the EU with Slovak SIM Cards
Slovakia and the Slovak mobile operators have largely adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on.
However, some plans have an EU/EEA roaming cap.
Moreover, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period.
If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply. You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.

Currency in Slovakia
Slovakia uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide).
However, prices are often listed as just €. For example, 25 EUR = €25.
For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 EUR = 1.05 USD
- 10 EUR = 10.65 USD
- 100 EUR = 106.65 USD
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say CZK – Czech Koruna) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.
Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Australian Dollars and Euros, my main currencies, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards.
Slovak Prepaid SIM Cards
Below, I will guide you through Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange Slovakia, O2 Slovakia, 4ka (by Swan Mobile) & many MVNOs that will be added later, and go through:
- Background information
- Mobile coverage
- SIM card types, prices & availability
- Recharge/top-up information
- Combo plans, data plans & special packs (such as social media packs)
With that being said, let’s see what Slovakia has to offer to us.
Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)

Slovak Telekom, sometimes referred to as just Telekom and formerly T-Mobile Slovakia, is the largest mobile operator in Slovakia.
It is, together with Orange Slovakia, the mobile operator with the best overall network.
Slovak Telekom, by Deutsche Telekom (from Germany), is active in Europe (as Telekom and T-Mobile) and the United States (as T-Mobile).
Slovak Telekom uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 2100 MHz (n1)
- VoLTE: Yes
- VoWiFi: No

SIM Card Price – Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)
You can get a Slovak Telekom SIM card, called Predplatenka, for 5 EUR with 10 EUR credit, 1 GB of data & unlimited local minutes in Slovak Telekom stores. SIM cards are not sold at Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS), but the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall near the airport does have a Slovak Telekom store.

You may have to text VoLTE to 12323 to activate VoLTE.
- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)

It is also possible to get a Slovak Telekom eSIM for the same price as a regular SIM card.
You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Slovakia, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Slovak Telekom.
Especially if you get a Europe-wide eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported European countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).
In my Slovakia eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.
But I will introduce them here quickly:
- Airalo: Dobrý deň! (Slovakia only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS) – use code DEC15 (15% off – first-time users only) or DEC10 (10% off)
- Alosim: Slovakia & Europe (32 countries) – use code PTW (5% off – no limits)
- Holafly: Slovakia & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ (5% off – no limits)
- Nomad: Slovakia, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant) – use code ADU123 (3 USD off – first-time users only)
Once again, check out my Slovakia eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.

For now, I will continue with Slovak Telekom.
Note that Slovak Telekom offers VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G)) if your phone supports it and you have enabled it in the settings but no VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi).

Orange uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz

4ka (by Swan Mobile)

4ka by Swan Mobile is the smallest mobile operator in Slovakia.
Swan also offers fixed broadband services. It started its mobile brand in 2015.
While it still has the worst network, 4ka is the cheapest mobile operator in Slovakia.
4ka uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 1800 MHz (Band 3)
- 5G NR: 1800 MHz (n3) & 3700 MHz (n78)
- VoLTE: Yes
- VoWiFi: No

Coverage – 4ka (by Swan Mobile)

SIM Card Price – 4ka (by Swan Mobile)
You can get a 4ka SIM card for 4 EUR with 4 EUR credit in 4ka stores and post offices stores. SIM cards are not sold at Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS), but the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall near the airport does have a 4ka partner store and a post office selling SIM cards.

- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)

It is also possible to get a 4ka eSIM for the same price as a regular SIM card.
Currently, 4ka does not have a list of devices that can use its eSIM.
But I suspect the standard Google Pixel, iPhone, Huawei (Mate) P40 (Pro) & Samsung (Galaxy (Note))/Flip can use 4ka's eSIMs.
You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Slovakia, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from 4ka.

For now, I will continue with 4ka.
Note that 4ka offers VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G)) if your phone supports it and you have enabled it in the settings but no VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi).
