Slovakia – known for its castles, folk dancing & landscapes.
Apparently, the country has the highest concentration of castles worldwide.
So, castle lovers – you know where to go to.
But besides castles, what else can you do in Slovakia? A lot.
Many churches, like The Blue Church, are worth visiting.
If you love nature and hiking, head to the mountains, and you will love the landscapes.
And if you are into skiing, skip Austria and ski in Slovakia – it will be much cheaper.
As you can see, the country has a lot to offer.
What it cannot offer you, unless you have an EU/EEA SIM card, is low international roaming rates.
International roaming can be expensive, which is why I always recommend local SIM cards, like a Slovak one, so that you can enjoy local rates.
And oh boy – SIM cards are inexpensive in Slovakia.
You can get a Slovak SIM card for 1 EUR (1.05 USD) or 2 EUR (2.15 USD) from Orange, 2 EUR from O2, 4 EUR (4.25 USD) from 4ka (by Swan Mobile) & 5 EUR (5.30 USD) from Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) in their stores or post offices. SIM cards are sold near Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) at the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall.
Special note for those from Ukraine: be sure to ask about special benefits for Ukrainians. Many mobile operators around Europe have waived fees for you or introduced exclusive plans, including free calls back to Ukraine. Слава Україні! 🇺🇦
Those prices are not too bad, right?
What may be bad are the high mobile data rates in the country (for Central- and Eastern European standards).
But the data-featured plans will not break the bank (unlike some countries in the Caribbean).
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Slovakia. Let's get started, shall we?

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Slovakia?
Anyone living in or visiting Slovakia can buy a Slovak SIM card from Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange, O2, 4ka (by Swan Mobile) & many MVNOs with no restrictions.
You do have to comply with the SIM card registration regulations.
- Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)

Moreover, you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Slovakia).
Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.
Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Slovakia?
You can get a Slovak SIM card in Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange, O2 & 4ka (by Swan Mobile) stores. Resellers, like post offices, also sell SIM cards (especially for 4ka and the MVNOs). They are also sold near Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) at the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall).
You can expect to pay the following for Slovak SIM cards:
- Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile): 5 EUR
- Orange Slovakia: 1 EUR & 2 EUR
- O2 Slovakia: 2 EUR
- 4ka (by Swan Mobile): 4 EUR
- MVNOs (like Tesco Mobile Slovakia): being added later
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say GBP) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.

Can You Use Your Phone in Slovakia?
Slovakia uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Slovakia. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).
Traditional European frequencies are used in Slovakia, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 and 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).
The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 and 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Slovakia.
If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Slovakia or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Slovakia (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE and 5G NR.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Slovakia
Slovakia has four mobile operators and various Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs – being added later) offering prepaid services:
- Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)
- Orange Slovakia
- O2 Slovakia
- 4ka (by Swan Mobile)
The following frequencies are used in Slovakia:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 1800 MHz (n3), 2100 MHz (n1) & 3500 MHz-3700 MHz (n78)
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Slovakia, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
VoLTE & VoWiFi in Slovakia
Both VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) are available in Slovakia. All Slovak mobile operators offer VoLTE, but not VoWiFi.
This means that your phone does not have to downgrade to 2G or 3G when making a call in Slovakia (unlike mobile operators that do not support VoLTE).
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE and VoWiFi in Slovakia:
- Orange Slovakia
- O2 Slovakia
The following mobile operators offer VoLTE only in Slovakia:
- Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)
- 4ka (by Swan Mobile)
VoWiFi is, as the name implies, calling on a WiFi connection as opposed to on a cellular network.
5G NR in Slovakia
Commercial 5G NR has been available in Slovakia since December 2021. It is available on the Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Orange, O2 & 4ka (by Swan Mobile) networks. Slovak Telekom and 4ka offer 5G NR to prepaid customers – O2 does too for a limited time 1. Orange does not offer 5G NR to prepaid customers – The MVNOs do not have 5G NR access yet.
1 I managed to get 5G NR access in March 2022

EU Roaming in Slovakia

Slovakia is part of the European Union (EU).
Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Slovakia.
This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase a Slovak SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.
However, conditions do apply. Mobile operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP).
In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and Nordics), mobile operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.
Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your mobile operator offers free roaming while in Slovakia or if restrictions apply.
Roaming in the EU with Slovak SIM Cards
Slovakia and the Slovak mobile operators have largely adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on.
However, some plans have an EU/EEA roaming cap.
Moreover, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period.
If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply. You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.

Currency in Slovakia
Slovakia uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide).
However, prices are often listed as just €. For example, 25 EUR = €25.
For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 EUR = 1.06 USD
- 10 EUR = 10.60 USD
- 100 EUR = 106.10 USD
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say CZK – Czech Koruna) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.
Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Australian Dollars and Euros, my main currencies, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards.
Slovak Prepaid SIM Cards

Slovak Telekom uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz

Orange Slovakia

Orange Slovakia, just Orange, is the second-largest mobile operator in Slovakia.
However, it is often the largest mobile operator, as the subscriber numbers between Orange and Slovak Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) are minimal.
Orange, as a company, is active in other countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe & the Middle East.
Orange uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)

It is also possible to get an Orange eSIM for the same price as a regular SIM card.
Currently, Orange does not have a list of devices that can use its eSIM.
But I suspect the standard Google Pixel, iPhone, Huawei (Mate) P40 (Pro) & Samsung (Galaxy (Note))/Flip can use Orange's eSIMs.
Note that the Slovak mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards.

O2 Slovakia

O2 Slovakia, just O2 but officially O2, is the third-largest mobile operator in Slovakia.
While the O2 brand is part of Telefónica, a Spanish telecommunications company active in the Americas (as Altice, Movistar & Vivo) and Europe (as Bouygues Telecom, Movistar & O2), O2 in Slovakia is owned by PFF.
It is a Czech-based investment firm that also runs Telenor (officially Norwegian) in Bulgaria, Hungary, Montenegro & Serbia.
O2 uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20) & 1800 MHz (Band 3)
- 5G NR: 1800 MHz (n3) & 3700 MHz (n78)
- VoLTE: Yes
- VoWiFi: Yes

Coverage – O2 Slovakia
O2 has the best 4G/LTE availability.
This was also confirmed by Opensignal.
Below is O2's coverage map produced by Speedtest:
However, click here to see O2's official coverage map.
SIM Card Price – O2 Slovakia
You can get an O2 SIM card, called Vol'nost', for 2 EUR with 2 EUR credit in O2 stores. SIM cards are not sold at Bratislava-M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS), but the AVION Shopping Park Bratislava mall near the airport does have an O2 store.

It is also possible to get an O2 eSIM for the same price as a regular SIM card.
Currently, O2 does not have a list of devices that can use its eSIM.
But I suspect the standard Google Pixel, iPhone, Huawei (Mate) P40 (Pro) & Samsung (Galaxy (Note))/Flip can use O2's eSIMs.
Note that the Slovak mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards.
Therefore, if you wish to get an eSIM for Slovakia without personal detail capturing, you can get the Slovakia (Dobrý Deň) eSIM from Airalo (1 GB/ 7 days, – most popular with PTW readers 3 GB/ 30 days, 5 GB/ 30 days & 10 GB/ 30 days).

The Airalo links will automatically get you the Phone Travel Wiz exclusive offers available – a code is unnecessary.

Top-Up, Recharge & Balance Check – O2 Slovakia
Packages, Plans, Bundles & Offers – O2 Slovakia
O2 has only one data-featured prepaid plan: Dátové Balíky (Data Packages) with 5G NR access.
Although I may have been lucky with 5G NR access, as O2 called it a promotion in one of the text messages they sent me.
However, speeds are restricted to 25 Mbps download and 15 Mbps upload.
On 5G NR, I managed to hit 625.72 Mbps in March 2022.
Text the Activation Code to 99222 to activate Dátové Balíky:
Price | Data | Speed (Down/Up) | Validity | Activation Code |
---|---|---|---|---|
0.75 EUR | 500 MB | 25 Mbps/15 Mbps | 1 day | 500MB |

3 EUR | 1 GB | 25 Mbps/15 Mbps | 28 days | 1GB4 A |
5 EUR | 2 GB | 25 Mbps/15 Mbps | 28 days | 2GB4 A |
1 up to 670 MB can be used in the EU/EEA. All the other plans have no EU/EEA allowance limit
