SIM Cards in Hungary: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Hungary – known for its thermal spas, good & architecture.

And if you make the hungry joke, an angry Hungarian will chase you down the streets 🥴.

The country has a rich history, which is still visible in its architecture.

Not just in Budapest, but also in rural Hungary.

So what can you do in the country besides looking at stunning buildings? A lot.

Of course, you have to visit a thermal bath yourself, like the Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

Views from the Fisherman's Bastion are breathtaking.

And getting up to the Heroes' Square is worth the effort.

You can even celebrate your achievement with a Frappuccino from Starbucks on the square 🤓.

While Hungary is a relatively affordable travel destination in Europe, international roaming is not.

In fact, international roaming can be expensive.

That is why I always recommend getting a local SIM card, like a Hungarian one, so that you can enjoy local rates.

Fortunately, SIM cards in Hungary are quite cheap.

You can get a Hungarian SIM card for 490 HUF (1.40 USD) from Yettel (formerly Telenor), 990 HUF (2.80 USD) from Magyar Telekom & 1500 HUF (4.25 USD) from Vodafone in their stores and from resellers, like kiosks. Yettel also has a data-only SIM card for 990 HUF. SIM cards are not sold at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) anymore.

I told you those prices are not too crazy.

Just wait until you see how cheap mobile data is in the country – certainly worth the investment!

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Hungary. Let's go.

What is the Best SIM Card in Hungary?

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Hungary, I recommend going with Magyar Telekom. It has the best network and has the fastest speeds. Consider Vodafone for generous data allowances (up to 500 GB for 30 days).

So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?

Hungary has three mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:

  • Magyar Telekom
  • Yettel Hungary (formerly Telenor Hungary/Magyarország)
  • Vodafone Hungary (Vodafone Magyarország)

Anyone 14 or older living in or visiting Hungary can buy a Hungarian SIM card with some restrictions, and you do have to comply with the Hungarian SIM card registration regulations.

And if you are younger than 14, you can still get a SIM card if your parents buy one for you (in their name).

Where Can You Buy an Hungarian SIM Card (+Costs)?

You can get a Hungarian SIM card for 490 HUF (1.40 USD) from Yettel (formerly Telenor), 990 HUF (2.80 USD) from Magyar Telekom & 1500 HUF (4.25 USD) from Vodafone in their stores and from resellers, like kiosks. Some Hungarian airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).

You can expect to pay the following for Hungarian SIM cards:

  • Magyar Telekom: 990 HUF
  • Yettel (formerly Telenor Hungary): 490 HUF (regular) & 990 HUF (data-only)
  • Vodafone Hungary: 1500 HUF

Note that SIM cards can be more expensive than those listed above when purchased at an airport.

(Travel) eSIMs for Hungary

In recent years, (travel) eSIMs have become extremely popular.

Especially after Apple made iPhones (14- & 15 series) sold in the United States eSIM-only, forcing its users to use eSIMs – even when abroad.

As a result, the adoption of eSIM technology by mobile operators worldwide rose impressively quickly.

Currently, only Yettel Hungary (formerly Telenor) offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.

But if you purchase an eSIM from any of these mobile operators, you must comply with Hungary's SIM card registration regulations.

Suppose you do not wish to do so for privacy reasons (for example) or want to be connected immediately without paying for an overpriced SIM card (or eSIM) sold at a Hungarian airport. In that case, you may consider getting a travel eSIM for Hungary.

In my Hungary eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.

Surprisingly, travel eSIMs can be cheaper than a Hungarian SIM card or eSIM in specific scenarios.

Moreover, Europe-wide and global eSIM options are also available at competitive prices (without having to deal with expensive international roaming rates).

In this Hungary SIM card buying guide (the one you are reading), I will stick to the local SIM cards and eSIM, but you can read my Hungary eSIM buying guide for more information about travel eSIMs covering the country.

But here is a quick overview already + applicable discount codes if you are interested in purchasing a travel eSIM for Hungary:

  • Airalo: Szia! (Hungary only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS)
  • Alosim: Hungary & Europe (32 countries)
  • Holafly: Hungary & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls
  • Nomad: Hungary, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant)

Here are some discount codes to sweeten the deal:

  • Airalo: MAR15 for 15% off (if you have never bought an Airalo eSIM before). Otherwise, MAR10 for 10% off (for existing users) – only the first 3000 users can redeem either discount code)
  • Alosim: PTW for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
  • Holafly: PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
  • Nomad: ADU123 for 3 USD off (on your first-ever Nomad order only)

Once again, check out my Hungary eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.

The eSIM guide is as comprehensive as this SIM card buying guide, but it solely focuses on travel eSIMs (while the guide you are reading focuses on local SIM cards and eSIMs for prepaid users (where applicable).
