Austria: 3 Best Prepaid SIM Cards Buying Guide (2022)

Austria – known for the Alps, its nature & for being the capital of classical music.

The country is an insanely popular travel destination for those who love to ski.

This is understandable, as it apparently has amazing mountains for skiing (I cannot confirm – I hate snow and snow-related sports 🤪).

But besides skiing or snowboarding, Austria has much more to offer.

Many stunning palaces have to be seen, including as Belvedere Palace, chönbrunn Palace & The Hofburg.

Let's not forget about the many churches and cathedrals, like St. Stephen's Cathedral.

And certainly do not miss out on Fortress Hohensalzburg.

And if all these urban attractions sound too urban for you – worry not. There are plenty of hiking trails with stunning nature and landscapes you can enjoy.

What certainly will not be enjoyable is you dealing with an expensive international roaming bill because you forgot to turn data roaming off.

International roaming can be expensive, which is why I always recommend local SIM cards, like an Austrian one, so that you can enjoy local rates.

While SIM cards in Austria are not the cheapest in Europe, mobile data rates in the country do be one of the lowest in Central Europe.

You can get an Austrian SIM card for 9.90-10 EUR (11 USD) from A1, Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) & Drei (3) in their stores and from resellers, like Mediamarkt. SIM cards are also sold at Salzburg Airport (SZG) and Vienna International Airport (VIE).

Special note for those from Ukraine: be sure to ask about special benefits for Ukrainians. Many mobile operators around Europe have waived fees for you or introduced exclusive plans, including free calls back to Ukraine. Слава Україні! 🇺🇦

There are some typical Northern- and Western European SIM card prices, so they are not outrageousl high.

But things can be much cheaper, like in Austria's neighboring countries. Anyway, we will focus on Austria alone for now!

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Austria. Let's do this.

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Austria?

Anyone living in or visiting Austria can buy an Austrian SIM card from A1, Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile), Drei (3) & many MVNO with no restrictions.

You do have to comply with the SIM card registration regulations.

Moreover, you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Austria).

Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.

Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Austria?

You can get an Austrian SIM card in A1, Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) & Drie (3) stores. Electronic shops, like Mediamarkt, also sell SIM cards (especially for the MVNOs). They are also sold at Salzburg Airport (SZG) and Vienna International Airport (VIE).

You can expect to pay the following for Austrian SIM cards:

  • A1 Austria: 9.90 EUR
  • Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile Austria): 10 EUR
  • Drei (3) Austria: 9.90 EUR (regular & data-only)
  • MVNOs (like Lycamobile Austria): being added later

Can You Use Your Phone in Austria?

Austria uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Austria. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).

Traditional European frequencies are used in Austria, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 and 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).

The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

ITU Regions Map
By Maximilian Dörrbecker (Chumwa) – Own work, using this file by Denelson83, CC BY-SA 2.5

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU regions 1 and 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Austria.

If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Austria or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).

If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Austria (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE and 5G NR.

Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Austria

Austria has three mobile operators and various Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs – being added later) offering prepaid services:

  • A1 Austria
  • Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile Austria)
  • Drei (3) Austria

The following frequencies are used in Austria:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 900 MHz (Band 8), 1800 MHz (Band 3), 2100 MHz (Band 1) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
  • 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78)

You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.

To check whether your phone will work in Austria, check out this page by Will My Phone Work (may be outdated or inaccurate at times).

Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).

If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.

VoLTE & VoWiFi in Austria

Both VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G) – also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi – also known as WiFi calling) are available in Austria. All Austrian mobile operators offer both services.

5G NR in Austria

Commercial 5G NR has been available in Austria since March 2019. It is available on the A1, Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) and Drie (3) networks. None of the mobile operators offer 5G NR to prepaid customers (yet).

Best SIM Card in Austria

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Austria, I recommend going with A1 or Drei (3). A1 has the best network and the fastest speeds. Drei has several unlimited data plans with reasonable speeds (30 Mbps/10 Mbps or 50 Mbps/20 Mbps) for only 30 EUR or 40 EUR.

Best eSIM in Austria

Drei (3) Austria offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.

However, you first need to buy a regular SIM card (9.90 EUR) and then exchange it for an eSIM for 20 EUR, making the total 29.90 EUR – just for an eSIM.

That is just too expensive.

A1 Austria and Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile) do not offer eSIMs to prepaid customers.

Note that the Austrian mobile operators require your identification (ID for EU/EEA travelers and passport for anyone else) for eSIMs and physical SIM cards (will be discussed later).

However, you can get travel eSIMs from Airalo, Holafly & Nomad.

Airalo has the Viennetz Mobil eSIMs:

EU Roaming in Austria

European Union (EU) & European Economic Area (EEA)

Austria is part of the European Union (EU).

Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Germany.

This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase an Austrian SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.

However, conditions do apply. Mobile operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP).

In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and Nordics), mobile operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.

Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your mobile operator offers free roaming while in Austria or if restrictions apply.

Roaming in the EU with Austrian SIM Cards

Austria and the Austrian mobile operators have largely adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on.

However, some plans have an EU/EEA roaming cap – some plans do not allow for roaming at all.

Moreover, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period.

If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply. You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.

Austria Mobile Speeds, Mobile Internet Prices & Insights

Flag of Austria

Europe is home to countries where the cost of mobile data is extremely low.

And the same can be said about Austria, which has one of the lowest mobile data rates in Central Europe.

The average price for 1 GB of data in Austria is 1.17 USD, below the European average of 2.50 USD. The world average is 4.07 USD.

And the costs have stayed low over the past few years.

Cable.co.uk split Europe into three territories: Western Europe, Eastern Europe & the Baltics.

The Western European average cost of 1 GB of data, using Cable.co.uk’s definition, is 2.66 USD.

Let's talk about mobile data speeds.

Are they fast in Austria? Yes, they are.

Austrias median mobile download speed is around 51 Mbps – almost double the global median.

Croatia and Switzerland (+Liechtenstein for that matter) are the only neighboring countries with higher median download speeds, (76.61 Mbps/76.53 Mbps) than Austria.

The Czech Republic (44.72 Mbps), Germany (52.30 Mbps), Hungary (39.01 Mbps), Italy (35.11 Mbps), Slovakia (31.90 Mbps) & Slovenia (51.33 Mbps) all have (much) slower mobile download speeds.

So Austria is doing just fine, especially with the nationwide rollout of 5G NR.

Okay, now it is time to know which mobile operator is the fastest in Austria.

That would be A1 Austria, with a speed score of 74.06. Followed by Drei (3 – 58.01) and Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile Austria – 52.18).

When looking at 5G NR speeds only, Drei is straight-up dominating, with a median download speed of 262.23 Mbps. Followed by Magenta Telekom (161.21 Mbps) and A1 (117.02 Mbps).

Of course, you can expect Vienna, the capital city, to be the place with the best 5G NR speeds – Drei is also not playing there.

All Austrian mobile operators are doing well regarding overall 5G NR network performance, while Drei is winning the speed race, of course).

There is no statistical winner for 5G NR availability, but A1 seems to be leading the pack.

So, all this 5G NR talk is fun… but we travelers cannot even use 5G NR because it is not available to prepaid customers 🥲.

Which Austrian mobile operator has the best overall 4G/LTE network?

That would be A1, sharing some categories with Magenta Telekom.

Drei is not a mobile operator you would want to touch if you look at these results… and that is why it is going big on 5G NR.

With average SIM card prices, extensive nationwide coverage, incredibly fast mobile download speeds, and average low mobile data rates, you should have a smooth network experience in Austria.

Currency in Austria

Austria uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide).

However, prices are often listed as just . For example, 25 EUR = €25.

For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):

  • 1 EUR = 1.15 USD
  • 10 EUR = 10.75 USD
  • 100 EUR = 107.50 USD

A1 Austria

A1 Austria, just A1, is the largest mobile operator in Austria.

However, Magenta Telekom (formerly T-Mobile Austria) takes the #1 position every now and then due to subscriber numbers being so close to each other.

A1 has the best overall network performance.

A1, as a company from Austria, is also active in Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia & Slovenia.

A1 uses the following frequencies:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
  • 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78) – not for prepaid customers (yet)
  • VoLTE: Yes

It is recommended to purchase your A1 SIM card in A1 or Mediamarkt stores for quick and instant registration.

Mediamarkt will always register SIM cards sold in its own stores (for free – also for A1).

Other retailers will want to charge you too (like Hartlauer – 6.25 EUR registration fee or post offices – up to 10 EUR), so I do not recommend getting your SIM card anywhere else besides A1 stores or Mediamarkt.

Otherwise, you can register your A1 SIM card online (for free) by video identification.

If you are from the EU/EEA, you can use your national ID too. Everyone else has to use their passport (but those from the EU/EEA can also use their passport, of course).

While A1 does have eSIMs, they are (currently) not offered to prepaid customers.

Using a travel eSIM from Airalo, Nomad, or Nomad allows you to circumvent A1's speed restrictions imposed on prepaid customers.

Therefore, if you wish to use an eSIM, you can go with the Austria (Viennetz Mobil) eSIMs from Airalo (1 GB/7 daysmost popular with PTW readers, 3 GB/30 days, 5 GB/30 days & 10 GB/30 days).

Drei (3) Austria

Three (3) Logo
© Drei (3)

Drei, sometimes written as just 3 (from Hutchison 3G Enterprises), is the smallest mobile operator in Austria.

It currently has the fastest 5G NR speeds, which are (sadly) not available to prepaid customers (yet).

It also won the Austria Fastest 5G (NR) Mobile Network Speedtest Award of 2021.

Three, as a company, is active in Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Indonesia (as Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison), Italy (as Wind Tre), Macau, Sweden & the United Kingdom.

Drei uses the following frequencies:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 900 MHz (Band 8), 1800 MHz (Band 3), 2100 MHz (Band 1) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
  • 5G NR: 3500 MHz (n78) – not for prepaid customers (yet)
  • VoLTE: Yes
  • VoWiFi: Yes

This is what you will learn about Drei:

Coverage – Drei (3) Austria

Drei (3) has the worst coverage in Austria. However, it is on par with its 5G NR coverage.

Drei is betting big time on 5G NR.

It has always been behind with other generations of cellular networks, resulting in Drei having the smallest market share.

For now, you will not be able to experience Drei's 5G NR network yet because it is not available to prepaid customers.

While Drei has the worst network, (4G/LTE) reception is available almost anywhere.

Below is Drie's 2G coverage map:

Here is Drei's 3G coverage map:

Then we have the 4G/LTE coverage map of Drei:

Finally, the Drei 5G NR coverage map (remember, not for prepaid customers yet):

Lastly, we have a Drei coverage map with all technologies combined (2G, 3G, 4G/LTE & 5G NR):

SIM Card Price – Drei (3) Austria

You can get a Drei (3) SIM card for 9.90 EUR with 4 GB of data, 1000 local minutes, 1000 local SMS for 30 days, or 10 GB for 30 days in Drei stores and electronic shops, like Mediamarkt. Drie SIM cards are not sold at Vienna International Airport (VIE).

SIM Card Prices Worldwide Tool by Phone Travel Wiz

It is recommended to purchase your Drei SIM card in Drei or Mediamarkt stores for quick and instant registration.

Mediamarkt will always register SIM cards sold in its own stores (for free – also for Drei).

Other retailers will want to charge you too (like Hartlauer – 6.25 EUR registration fee or post offices – up to 10 EUR), so I do not recommend getting your SIM card anywhere else besides Drei stores or Mediamarkt.

Otherwise, you can register your Drei SIM card online (for free) by video identification.

If you are from the EU/EEA, you can use your national ID too. Everyone else has to use their passport (but those from the EU/EEA can also use their passport, of course).

Moving on – it is also possible to get a Drei eSIM for an exchange fee of 20 EUR (meaning that you need to purchase a physical Drei SIM card first before swapping it for an eSIM).

As a result, you will pay 29.90 EUR for the privilege of using a Drei eSIMnot worth it at all.

If you do not want to shill out 30 EUR to use an eSIM, you can go with the Austria (Viennetz Mobil) eSIMs from Airalo (1 GB/7 daysmost popular with PTW readers, 3 GB/30 days, 5 GB/30 days & 10 GB/30 days).

Moreover, using a travel eSIM from Airalo, Nomad, or Nomad allows you to circumvent Drei's speed restrictions imposed on prepaid customers.
