SIM Cards in Croatia: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Croatia – known for its waterfalls, islands & Roman Ruins.

The country is also home to many stunning beaches, like the ones in Split.

But can you do other things than soaking up the sun? For sure.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must-see – it is breathtaking.

The Diocletian's Palace is impressive too.

And do not forget about Blue Grotto.

While all of those activities sound fun, what is not fun is dealing with an expensive international roaming bill because you forgot to turn data roaming off.

International roaming can be expensive, which is why I always recommend local SIM cards, like a Croatian one, so that you can enjoy local rates.

So, how much do SIM cards cost in Croatia?

You can get a Croatian SIM card for 20 HKR (2.55 USD) from Hrvatski Telekom (Simpa), A1 (formerly vip), Telemach (formerly Tele2) & Tomato in their stores and from resellers, like convenience stores and grocery stores. SIM cards are also sold at various airports, including Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (ZAG).

Not too bad, right? What if I told you that Hrvatski Telekom and A1 offer tourist SIM cards with truly unlimited data for 85 HRK and 80 HRK, respectively.

These SIM cards are also popular with digital nomads, as you can use those SIM cards in your phone or mobile hotspot, which can then be used while working on your business while on the beach.

Have I done this before? Maybe 😏.

Nah, the glare on your laptop from the pleasant sun is not cool 🤪.

Anyway…

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Croatia. Let's go.

What is the Best SIM Card in Croatia?

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Croatia, I recommend going with Simpa by Hrvatski Telekom. It has the best overall network and the fastest speeds. Consider its tourist SIM card with unlimited data for 7 days, costing 85 HRK (12.80 USD).

So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?

Croatia has four mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:

  • Hrvatski Telekom (Simpa)
  • A1 Croatia (formerly vip Croatia)
  • Telemach Croatia (formerly Tele2 Croatia)
  • BonBon Croatia (Hrvatski Telekom MVNO)
  • Tomato Croatia (A1 Croatia MVNO)
Cellular Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

n this guide, I will stick to the mobile operators and the most popular MVNOs, all in bold above, to limit the length of this guide (but also not to overwhelm you with all the options available).

But if you are interested in getting a SIM card from one of the unbolded MVNOs, you would have to do the research yourself for the time being. I stopped actively testing and reviewing MVNOs to spend time reviewing travel eSIMs instead, like the ones for Croatia.

Anyone living in or visiting Croatia can buy a Croatian SIM card with no restrictions, but you do have to comply with the Croatian SIM card registration regulations.

Where Can You Buy an Croatian SIM Card (+Costs)?

You can get a Croatian SIM card in Hrvatski Telekom (for Simpa), A1 (formerly vip – also for Tomato) & Telemach (formery Tele2) stores. Resellers, like post offices, newsstands & grocery stores, also sell SIM cards. Some Croatian airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).

You can expect to pay the following for Croatian SIM cards:

  • Simpa by Hrvatski Telekom: 20 HRK
  • A1 Croatia (formerly vip Croatia): 20 HRK
  • Telemach Croatia (formerly Tele2 Croatia): 20 HRK (regular), 49 HRK (regular) & 70 HRK (data-only)
  • Tomato Croatia: 20 HRK

The following Croatian mobile operators also have SIM cards targeting tourists:

  • Simpa by Hrvatski Telekom: 85 HRK
  • A1 Croatia (formerly vip Croatia): 80 HRK
  • Telemach Croatia (formerly Tele2 Croatia): 75 HRK

Note that SIM cards can be more expensive than those listed above when purchased at an airport.

(Travel) eSIMs for Croatia

In recent years, (travel) eSIMs have become extremely popular.

Especially after Apple made iPhones (14- & 15 series) sold in the United States eSIM-only, forcing its users to use eSIMs – even when abroad.

As a result, the adoption of eSIM technology by mobile operators worldwide rose impressively quickly.

Currently, only A1 Croatia (formerly vip Croatia) offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.`

In my Croatia eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.

Buying an eSIM for Croatia Guide (logos of Holafly, Nomad, Eurolink, Discover+, Cronet, Alosim & Airalo)

Surprisingly, travel eSIMs can be cheaper than a Croatian SIM card or eSIM in specific scenarios.

Moreover, Europe-wide and global eSIM options are also available at competitive prices (without having to deal with expensive international roaming rates).

In this Croatia SIM card buying guide (the one you are reading), I will stick to the local SIM cards and eSIM, but you can read my Croatia eSIM buying guide for more information about travel eSIMs covering the country.

But here is a quick overview already + applicable discount codes if you are interested in purchasing a travel eSIM for Croatia:

  • Airalo: Cronet (Croatia only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS)
  • Alosim: Croatia & Europe (32 countries)
  • Holafly: Croatia & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls
  • Nomad: Croatia, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant)

Here are some discount codes to sweeten the deal:

  • Airalo: FEB15 for 15% off (if you have never bought an Airalo eSIM before). Otherwise, FEB10 for 10% off (for existing users) – only the first 3000 users can redeem either discount code)
  • Alosim: PTW for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
  • Holafly: PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
  • Nomad: ADU123 for 3 USD off (on your first-ever Nomad order only)

Once again, check out my Croatia eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.

The eSIM guide is as comprehensive as this SIM card buying guide, but it solely focuses on travel eSIMs (while the guide you are reading focuses on local SIM cards and eSIMs for prepaid users (where applicable).

Hrvatski Telekom, sometimes referred to as just Telekom or HT and formerly T-Mobile Croatia, is the largest mobile operator in Croatia.

It also won the Croatia Fastest Mobile Network Speedtest Award of 2021.

It has the best overall network in Croatia.

Its prepaid brand is called Simpa, which is why you will see me refer to both brands as Hrvatski Telekom/Simpa.

Hrvatski Telekom, by Deutsche Telekom (from Germany), is active in Europe (as Telekom and T-Mobile) and the United States (as T-Mobile).

Hrvatski Telekom uses the following frequencies:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz

While Hrvatski Telekom does have eSIMs, they are (currently) not offered to prepaid customers (Simpa).

You can consider getting a travel eSIM for Croatia, which can, in specific scenarios, be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Hrvatski Telekom.

Especially if you get a Europe-wide eSIM (for when you visit at least two or more supported European countries) or a global eSIM (for frequent travelers visiting multiple continents).

In my Croatia eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.

SIM Card Prices Worldwide Tool by Phone Travel Wiz

Tomato has no eSIMs – not even for postpaid customers.

You may want to get a travel eSIM for Croatia, which can be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Tomato (in some cases).

Especially when getting a Europe-wide eSIM if you do not stay in just Croatia or a global eSIM valid for up to a year if you want one eSIM to work practically worldwide.

My Croatia eSIM buying guide analyzes various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.

Here is a quick introduction to them:

  • Airalo: Cronet (Croatia only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + call and text feature) – use code FEB15 (15% off – first-time users only) or FEB10 (10% off)
  • Alosim: Croatia & Europe (32 countries) – use code PTW (5% off – no limits)
  • Holafly: Croatia & Europe (32 countries) – these eSIMs have unlimited data + calling feature – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ (5% off – no limits)
  • Nomad: Croatia, Europe (up to 35 countries) & Global (up to 139 countries) – use code ADU123 (3 USD off – first-time users only)

For more information, such as the prices and data allowances, check out my Croatia eSIM buying guide.

But let's continue with Tomato for now.

Note that Tomato offers VoLTE (Voice over LTE (4G)) if your phone supports it and you have enabled it in the settings.

Oh, you can also use VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi).
