3 Best Prepaid SIM Cards in Cyprus: Buying Guide

Cyprus – claimed to be the island of love by Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. But now, it is named after Rock of the Greeks (Petra Tou Romiou), which is currently associated with the Greek Digenis Akritas, who threw rocks at his enemies.

But besides this type of history, there is a lot to see and do in Cyprus. From chilling at beaches to visiting and exploring archaeological sites in Paphos.

You can also see the old city walls in Nicosia or the Limassol Castle in, of course, Limassol.

Whatever you will be doing in Cyprus, you certainly want to share your experiences online – and you should. However, do know that international roaming can be expensive – crazy expensive.

Luckily, anyone visiting Cyprus can buy a local SIM card – the cheapest way to stay connected when traveling around the world.

And Cypriot SIM cards are inexpensive!

You can get a Cypriot SIM card for 2 EUR in Cytamobile (Vodafone), Epic, PrimeTel, and Lemontel Mobile stores and third-party resellers. 2 GB valid for 7 days will set you back at least 5 EUR.

And that while Cyprus is regarded as the most expensive European country for mobile data, and the second-most for the Middle East!

The cost of data has gone down significantly over the years, but there is still room to improve. But the speeds in the country are blazing-fast. So fast that it is one of the European and Middle Eastern countries with the fastest mobile download speeds!

Before we get all too excited, there are still many things to be aware of when getting Cypriot SIM cards.

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Cyprus. Let's do this.

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Cyprus?

Anyone living in or visiting Cyprus can buy a Cypriot SIM card from Cytamobile (Vodafone), Epic Cyprus, PrimeTel & Lemontel Mobile without any restrictions.

Be aware that you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Cyprus). Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.

Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Cyprus?

You can get a Cypriot SIM card in the official stores of Cytamobile (Vodafone), Epic, PrimeTel & Cablenet (Lemontel Mobile). They can also be obtained from other stores, including kiosks, mini markets, and electronic shops.

It is also possible to buy SIM cards at several airports, such as Larnaca International Airport (Larnaka Uluslararası Havaalanı/Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Λάρνακας) and Paphos International Airport (Baf Uluslararası Havaalanı/Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Πάφου).

You can expect to pay the following for Cypriot SIM cards:

  • Cytamobile (Vodafone): 2 EUR (regular) & 14.95 EUR (data-only)
  • Epic Cyprus: 2 EUR
  • PrimeTel: 2 EUR
  • Lemontel Mobile by Cablenet: 2 EUR

Can You Use Your Phone in Cyprus?

Cyprus uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Cyprus If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).

Traditional European frequencies are used in Cyprus, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 & 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).

The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American Frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

ITU Regions Map

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU regions 1 & 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Cyprus.

If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Cyprus or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).

If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Cyprus (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE or 5G NR.

Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Cyprus

Cyprus has four mobile network operators:

  • Cytamobile (Vodafone)
  • Epic Cyprus
  • PrimeTel
  • Lemontel Mobile by Cablenet

The following frequencies are used in Cyprus:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
  • 5G NR: 700 MHz (n28) & 3500 MHz (n78)

You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.

Cannot see the video above? Watch it here or on YouTube.

To check whether your phone will work in Cyprus, check out this page by Will My Phone Work (may be outdated or inaccurate at times).

Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).

If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.

A Note About Lemontel Mobile

Lemontel Mobile Logo

Lemontel Mobile, by Cablenet, used to be an MVNO using the Cytamobile (Vodafone) network until it managed to get a mobile network operator license. Since then, Cablenet has offered mobile services through Lemontel Mobile primarily to its existing broadband customers.

Although Lemontel Mobile SIM cards are widely available, it does not offer (affordable nor attractive) data-featured packages. Instead, you can only use Pay As You Go data charged at 0.01003 EUR/MB (or 10.27 EUR/GB).

In general, that is not too expensive for Pas As You Go data browsing. However, as the other three mobile operators have much better and more attractive plans featuring data, which are much cheaper, Lemontel Mobile will not be covered in this guide.

If you want to learn more about what Lemontel Mobile has to offer, you can visit its site (in English).

Below you have Lemontel Mobile's coverage map:

5G NR in Cyprus

Commercial 5G NR has been available in Cyprus since early 2021. Cytamobile (Vodafone) was the first to launch 5G NR. Epic Cyprus followed quickly.

Both operators offer 5G to prepaid customers. At the time of writing, PrimeTel has yet to commercially launch 5G NR to its customers, even though it has obtained the necessary licenses.

Best SIM Card in Cyprus

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Cyprus, I recommend going with either Cytamobile (Vodafone) or Epic. Cytamobile has the best nationwide coverage. Epic has become the fastest operator since 2020.

SIM Card Registration in Cyprus

SIM card registration, with the use of your personal information (such as your passport), is not required when buying a SIM card in Cyprus.

EU Roaming in Cyprus

European Union (EU) & European Economic Area (EEA)

Cyprus is part of the European Union (EU). Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Cyprus.

This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase a Cypriot SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.

However, conditions do apply. Operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP). In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and Nordics), operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.

Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your operator offers free roaming while in Cyprus or if restrictions apply.

Roaming in the EU with Cypriot SIM Cards

EU Roaming
© European Commission

Cyprus and the Cypriot operators have fully adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on. Unlike most EU/EEA operators that impose EU/EEA roaming caps, none of the Cypriot operators have such caps.

However, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period. If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply. You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.

Cyprus Speeds, Internet Prices & Insights

Flag of Cyprus

Cyprus has always been an expensive nation for mobile data. This is due to several reasons, including its location.

However, the cost of mobile data has dropped significantly over the years. But it is still on the more expensive end for both European and Middle Eastern standards.

The average price for 1 GB of data in Cyprus is 8.85 USD, far above the Middle Eastern average of 3.94 USD. The world average is 4.07 USD.

But, we should acknowledge that the costs have gone down a lot – even over a two-year period. Compared to 2019's figures, the average price of 1 GB of data has dropped by 56.3% – not bad at all!

And because Cyprus is part of the European Union, you probably want to know how Cyprus performs compared to other European nations.

Well, Cyprus has the highest average cost for 1 GB of data in Europe. Slightly ahead of Greece (8.16 USD) and Czech Republic (8.15 USD) – the European average is 2.50 USD.

So, costs have gone down (significantly, but not enough), what about mobile internet speeds? Are data speeds fast in Cyprus?

Yes, they are.

Cyprus' average mobile download speed is around 106 Mbps, placing the country in the top 10 countries with the fastest mobile download speeds.

When compared to other Middle Eastern nations, Cyprus is in place 5 on the list of Middle Eastern countries with the fastest mobile download speeds (behind the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia & Kuwait). When looking at Europe, Cyprus is behind Norway and Switzerland.

The fast speeds have to do with the introduction to 5G NR in Cyprus. Exactly a year earlier, Cyprus' average download speed was half its current download speed.

Remember when I said that Epic Cyprus has the fastest speeds in the country? That was not always the case. Cytamobile (Vodafone) used to be the best in terms of mobile coverage and speeds – until 2020.

Below are some speed test comparisons from 2017 to 2020. Do note that Epic Cyprus was formerly MTN Cyprus.

Here is Speedtest's first Cyprus Awards for Fastest Mobile Network of the year 2017.

As you can see, Epic/MTN Cyprus was the worst, while Cytamobile was trailing ahead of its competitors by a large margin.

Then we have the numbers of the Cyprus 2018 Speedtest Awards Fastest Mobile Network, where Epic/MTN Cyprus doubled its average mobile download speed.

The numbers improved slightly in the Cyprus 2019 Speedtest Awards Fastest Mobile Network, but Cytamobile (Vodafone) was still the number 1.

In 2020, when the rebrand from MTN Cyprus to Epic Cyprus was completed, Epic Cyprus decided that it was time to take the number one spot.

And now we are here. 5G NR is actively being rolled out in Cyprus, and prepaid customers do not have to wait years to take advantage of it (like in many countries worldwide).

Moreover, network coverage is great throughout Cyprus, but you may still experience spotty connections in some locations (especially with PrimeTel).

Overall, you should have a smooth network experience in Cyprus.

Currency in Cyprus

50 Euro Bank Note
© European Central Bank (ECB)

Cyprus uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide). However, prices are often listed as just . For example, 25 EUR = €25. For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):

  • 1 EUR = 1.20 USD
  • 10 EUR = 12.15 USD
  • 100 EUR = 121.55 USD

For up-to-date EUR:USD exchange rates, search EUR to USD on Google, or replace USD with the currency you use.

If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Transferwise Borderless Account and Debit Card. Their fees are MUCH lower than banks, and credit card companies charge you (and Transferwise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks). Other Ways to Stay Connected When Traveling in Cyprus

The cheapest way to get online in Cyprus is to get a SIM card from one of the 3 mobile operators unless you have an EU/EEA SIM card and can roam for free in Cyprus. However, local SIM cards are not your only method of staying online when abroad.

Below are some other options to consider.

International Roaming

Roaming is the most convenient way to stay connected. You do not have to buy a new SIM card, and people at home can easily reach you on your current phone number.

However, roaming has many downsides as well. It can be insanely expensive.

Learn more about roaming.

International/Travel SIM Cards

International SIM cards or travel SIM cards are SIM cards made for travelers. The rates charged are often lower than international roaming, but they are almost always higher than what local operators will charge you.

Mobile Hotspots (Pocket WIFI)

Mobile hotspots, or pocket WIFI, are small devices that connect to the local operators of the country you are visiting. Mobile hotspots are ideal for families or those traveling in a large group, as they allow you to connect multiple devices to one hotspot without the need of each traveler having to buy a SIM card.

You can either buy a mobile hotspot or rent one.

Free WIFI Networks

Nothing beats free, right? Paying nothing to stay connected may be the best option. Until you remember that free hotspots are not available everywhere (especially when on the move) and that free connections are often extremely slow.

Just make sure to protect your internet traffic with a VPN when connected to open WIFI connections. It is worth it.

The Preferred Way to Stay Connected When Traveling in Cyprus

Getting a SIM card from Cytamobile (Vodafone) or Epic would do you well when considering a Cypriot SIM card.
