Bosnia and Herzegovina – one of the nine countries with two names. It also has three official languages: Bosnian, Croatian & Serbian.
Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina has an incredible history. Churches, cathedrals, and bridges – there is a lot to see.
But the country should not be visited just for history, even though there are many historical things to see. From winter sports in Sarajevo to Rafting in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina can be a thrilling travel destination.
And I am sure you want to share your travel experiences online. It is expected nowadays, so share away!
However, you should know that international roaming can be expensive. If you do not watch out, you may face a costly bill when you go back home – one way to ruin your post-holiday mood.
Luckily, there is one way to stay connected for low rates, which is by getting local SIM cards when traveling. This would be buying a SIM card in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And everyone can do so without restrictions.
So how much will a Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM card cost you?
You can get a SIM card for as low as 4 BAM (2.50 USD) in the official stores of BH Telecom, m:tel, or HT Eronet. They are also sold in other establishments like grocery stores. A plan with 1 GB of data valid for 7 days can be purchased for 3 BAM (1.85 USD).
Those are some exciting prospects. At least, to me – I love cheap data (and you probably do too if you are reading this and are not planning on roaming when traveling).
But do not be too excited yet. There are still many things to know about getting a Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM card.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Let's do this.

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Anyone in Bosnia and Herzegovina can buy a Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM card regardless of whether they are visiting the country as a tourist/traveler or are living there.
You do need to have a phone that supports the frequencies used in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Furthermore, your device has to be SIM-lock-free (unlocked) if you plan on using local SIM cards.
Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM cards are available in the official stores of the operators (BH Telecom, m:tel, HT Eronet), and other stores, such as post offices, grocery stores, newsstands, gas stations, and convenience stores.
It is also possible to buy SIM cards at Sarajevo International Airport (Međunarodni Aerodrom Sarajevo).
You can expect to pay the following for Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM cards:
- BH Telecom: 5 BAM
- M:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina: 4 BAM
- HT Eronet: 4 BAM
GO! free (m:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina MVNO): 4 BAMshut down- Haloo (HT Eronet MVNO): 4 BAM
The following operators also have SIM cards targeting tourists:
- BH Telecom: from 20 BAM
- HT Eronet: 20 BAM
- Haloo: 20 BAM
For up-to-date BAM:your currency (let's say EUR) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.

Can You Use Your Phone in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Bosnia and Herzegovina use GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Bosnia and Herzegovina. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).
Traditional European frequencies are used in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 & 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).
The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American Frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU regions 1 & 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Bosnia and Herzegovina or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Bosnia and Herzegovina (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina has three mobile network operators (Main Operators) and two (Mobile Virtual Network Operators):
- BH Telecom
- M:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina
- HT Eronet
GO! free (m:tel Bosnia and Herzegovina MVNO)shut down- Haloo (HT Eronet MVNO)
The following frequencies are used in Bosnia and Herzegovina:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20) & 1800 MHz (Band 3)
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, check out this page by Will My Phone Work (may be outdated or inaccurate at times).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
5G NR in Bosnia and Herzegovina
5G is not available in Bosnia and Herzegovina as of 2022, and the Bosnian and Herzegovinian government has not made any indications of when they will auction 5G licenses. However, BH Telecom has held 5G trials back in 2020.

SIM Card Registration in Bosnia and Herzegovina
SIM card registration using your passport information is not needed when buying a SIM card in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
EU Roaming in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Note that Bosnia and Herzegovina is not part of the European Union (EU) nor European Economic Area (EEA), meaning that EU roaming regulations do not apply in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a result, you should not expect to roam for free if you have an EU/EEA SIM card while traveling in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Although some European operators may offer free (data) roaming while in Bosnia and Herzegovina, most operators do not. Make sure to explore your roaming options before you roam.
Roaming in the EU with Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM Cards
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not part of the European Union (EU) nor the European Economic Area (EEA). Therefore, the EU roaming regulations do not apply to Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM cards. As a result, you should expect to roam for free in the EU/EEA with Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM cards.
However, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Potential Candidate Country for joining the EU. The country also wants to join the EU/EEA common roaming zone in the near future. To do so, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other Western Balkan countries have decided to cap roaming rates between July 2019 and July 2021. They will entirely scrap roaming rates within the region on the 1st of July 2021. This is because it is apparently a prerequisite to join the EU/EEA common roaming zone.
West Balkan Roaming
Those with SIM cards from Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia can roam at reduced rates in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and those with Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM cards can do the same in the aforementioned countries as part of the Roam Like At Home Plus (RLAH+) scheme agreed to by the six countries since July 2019.

Starting from the 1st of July 2019, roaming rates in Western Balkan states have gone down by up to 99%. From the 1st of July 2021, international roaming fees will be abolished in the West Balkans.

Currency in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina use the Bosnia-Herzegovina Convertible Marka, also known as simply Bosnian Mark, with the symbol BAM (which will be used throughout this guide). However, prices are often listed as just KM. For example, 25 BAM = 25 KM. For reference, below are some exchange rates between BAM and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 BAM = 0.60 USD
- 10 BAM = 6.10 USD
- 100 BAM = 60 USD
For up-to-date BAM:your currency (let's say EUR – Euro) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.
Their fees are MUCH lower than banks, and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Euros, my main currency, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards. Open a Wise account FREE!

Make Your Own Plan – HT Eronet
With !hej Slagalica, you can customize your plan by setting how much data and how many minutes and SMS you want.

You can activate your own plan by texting the word PAKET with the Activation Code to 0637790.
The Activation Code will be different depending on your selection. Do note that the activation code should be written in this order: PAKET + Minutes Activation Code + SMS Activation Code + Data Activation Code.
That looks complicated, but let me explain and visualize.
Let's say I want 3 GB of data, 80 local minutes, and 150 local SMS. The Activation Code for data would be I3. For minutes, it would be M2. For SMS, it would be S2. So I would text PAKETM2S2I3 to 0637790.

You are not required to select all options. If I only wanted 3 GB of data, I would simply text PAKETI3 to 0637790.

If this is still too confusing, go to the Make Your Own Plan page (in Bosnian) and see what Activation Code the page recommends

Other Ways to Stay Connected When Traveling in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The cheapest way to get online in Bosnia and Herzegovina is to get a SIM card from one of the five mobile operators. However, local SIM cards are not your only method of staying online when abroad.
Below are some other options to consider.
International Roaming
Roaming is the most convenient way to stay connected. You do not have to buy a new SIM card, and people at home can easily reach you on your current phone number.
However, roaming has many downsides as well. It can be insanely expensive.
International/Travel SIM Cards
International SIM cards or travel SIM cards are SIM cards made for travelers. The rates charged are often lower than international roaming, but they are almost always higher than what local operators will charge you.
Get to know more about international and travel SIM cards.
Mobile Hotspots (Pocket WIFI)
Mobile hotspots, or pocket WIFI, are small devices that connect to the local operators of the country you are visiting. Mobile hotspots are ideal for families or those traveling in a large group, as they allow you to connect multiple devices to one hotspot without the need of each traveler having to buy a SIM card.
You can either buy a mobile hotspot or rent one.
Free WIFI Networks
Nothing beats free, right? Paying nothing to stay connected may be the best option. Until you remember that free hotspots are not available everywhere (especially when on the move) and that free connections are often extremely slow.
Just make sure to protect your internet traffic with a VPN when connected to open WIFI connections. It is worth it.
The Preferred Way to Stay Connected When Traveling in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Getting a SIM card from BH Telecom or HT Eronet would do you well when considering a Bosnian and Herzegovinian SIM card.
