Luxembourg – the country with the world's second-highest GDP, behind Qatar, is the smallest country in Europe when excluding microstates.
The country has three official languages, which are French, German & Luxembourgish (close to German), but you can get along with just English.
Is it even worth visiting such a small country?
Yes, it is.
There are plenty of museums to visit, including the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art.
Or you may be into castles – the Vianden Castle, built on old Roman ruins, may be for you.
Are you into churches or cathedrals? Cathé Notre-Dame could be interesting.
As you can see, Luxembourg is an amazing travel destination for history buffs.
Or you can enjoy the country's nature – it is full of forests.
But before you decide to post all your Luxembourg photos online, be aware that international roaming can be expensive.
That is why you are better off getting a local SIM card, such as a Luxembourg one, to enjoy local rates.
So, are SIM cards expensive in Luxembourg?
You can get a Luxembourg SIM card for 3 EUR (3.35 USD) from Orange, 10 EUR (11.10 USD) from Tango, or between 5 EUR to 100 EUR (5.55 USD – 111 USD) with five variants from POST Telecom Luxembourg in their stores and from resellers, like convenience stores and grocery stores. SIM cards are not sold at Luxembourg Airport (LUX).
Those prices are not too bad! It could be much worse.
But what else is there to know about SIM cards in this country?
Quite a lot.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Luxembourg. Let’s go.

Table of Contents
Can You Buy a SIM Card in Luxembourg?
Anyone living in or visiting Luxembourg can buy a Luxembourg SIM card from the mobile network operators (POST Telecom Luxembourg, Tango & Orange Luxembourg) without restrictions.
You do have to comply with the SIM card registration regulations.
- Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)

Moreover, you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Luxembourg).
Furthermore, you need to have a SIM-lock-free device.
Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Luxembourg?
You can get a Luxembourg SIM card in POST Telecom Luxembourg, Tango & Orange Luxembourg stores or other retailers, including grocery stores, electronic stores & convenience stores. It is not possible to get a SIM card at Luxembourg Airport.
You can expect to pay the following for Luxembourg SIM cards:
- POST Telecom Luxembourg: 5 EUR, 10 EUR, 15 EUR, 25 EUR & 100 EUR
- Tango Luxembourg: 10 EUR
- Orange Luxembourg: 3 EUR
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say GBP) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.

Can You Use Your Phone in Luxembourg?
Luxembourg uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA phones will not work in Luxembourg. If your phone has a SIM card slot, then it supports GSMA (99% of the phones do support GSM nowadays).
Traditional European frequencies are used in Luxembourg, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 and 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).
The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American Frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 and 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Luxembourg.
If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Luxembourg or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Luxembourg (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE and 5G NR.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Luxembourg
Luxembourg has three mobile network operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:
- POST Telecom Luxembourg
- Tango Luxembourg
- Orange Luxembourg
The following frequencies are used in Luxembourg:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: 2100 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 700 MHz (n28) & 3500 MHz (n78)
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Luxembourg, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
5G NR in Luxembourg
Commercial 5G NR has been available in Luxembourg since September 2020. It is available on the POST Telecom Luxembourg, Tango & Orange networks. Only Tango allows prepaid customers access to its 5G NR networks. POST Telecom Luxembourg and Orange Luxembourg may so do in the (near) future.
Best SIM Card in Luxembourg
Best eSIM in Luxembourg
Unfortunately, none of the mobile operators offer eSIM to prepaid customers in Luxembourg yet.
Note that the Luxembourg mobile operators require your identification (passport) for (future) eSIMs and physical SIM cards (will be discussed later).
However, you can also get a travel eSIM from various eSIM providers.
The list below is not exhaustive – many more providers have eSIMs for Luxembourg.
But these are the ones I have tried and had pleasant experiences with.
Moreover, they are reasonably priced, which I find very important (you will not see me recommending an eSIM I would not buy myself).
So here are the six best eSIMs for Luxembourg:
- Airalo's Luxcom Luxembourg eSIM with six choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (best value for money)
- Airalo's Eurolink Europe eSIM with six choices between 1 GB and 100 GB (best value for money when also visiting other European countries) – read my ongoing Airalo Eurolink eSIM review too!
- Holafly Luxembourg eSIM with unlimited data for 5 to 90 days (truly unlimited data plans at premium prices)
- Nomad Luxembourg eSIM with ten choices between 1 GB and 20 GB (switches to the best network, allowing for excellent reception at all times)
- Holafly Europe eSIM with unlimited data for 5 to 60 days (truly unlimited data plans when also visiting other European countries at premium prices)
- Nomad Europe eSIM with 13 choices between 1 GB and 40 GB (the best of both worlds in terms of pricing and performance)
Because this is the SIM card buying guide for Luxembourg, I will not spend too much time about travel eSIMs here and throughout this guide (but I will still do here and there).
If you want to learn more about the best eSIMs for Luxembourg, you better check out my Luxembourg eSIM buying guide.
It is as helpful and comprehensive as this guide but about eSIMs instead 😜.

SIM Card Registration in Luxembourg
SIM card registration with your passport information is mandatory in Luxembourg. It will be done at the point of sale.
EU Roaming in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is part of the European Union (EU).
Since June 2017, those with EU/EEA (European Economic Area) SIM cards can roam for free in other EU/EEA nations, including Cyprus.
This means that, in the majority of cases, you do not need to purchase a Cypriot SIM card if you already have an EU/EEA SIM card because you can roam without additional costs.
However, conditions do apply. Mobile operators in some countries may impose a roaming Fair Use Policy (FUP).
In countries where local mobile data rates are extremely low (such as in the Baltics and the Nordics), mobile operators may still charge you for roaming in the EU/EEA.
Be sure to head over to the international roaming page to learn whether your mobile operator offers free roaming while in Cyprus or if restrictions apply.
Roaming in the EU with Luxembourg SIM Cards
Cyprus and the Cypriot mobile operators have fully adopted the roam like at home regulations principles early on.
Unlike most EU/EEA mobile operators that impose EU/EEA roaming caps, none of the Cypriot mobile operators have such caps.
However, the standard Fair Use Policy applies where you should not be roaming over 50% of the time over a four-month period.
If you do so, EU roaming rates will apply.
You are then better off buying local prepaid SIM cards in other EU nations.
Luxembourg Mobile Speeds, Mobile Internet Prices & Insights

Currency in Luxembourg
Luxembourg uses the Euro with the symbol EUR (which will be used throughout this guide).
However, prices are often listed as just €. For example, 25 EUR = €25.
For reference, below are some exchange rates between EUR and USD (US Dollars):
- 1 EUR = 1.10 USD
- 10 EUR = 11.10 USD
- 100 EUR = 111.05 USD
For up-to-date EUR:your currency (let's say GBP – (British) Pound (Sterling)) exchange rates, use the Wise Currency Converter tool.
If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.
Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
I have saved literal THOUSANDS of Australian Dollars and Euros, my main currencies, when using Wise abroad when traveling compared to my debit and credit cards.
Luxembourg Prepaid SIM Cards
Below, I will guide you through Post Telecom Luxembourg, Tango & Orange Luxembourg, and go through:
- Background information
- Mobile coverage
- SIM card types, prices, and availability
- Recharge / top-up information
- Combo plans, data plans, and special packs (such as social media packs)
With that being said, let’s see what Luxembourg has to offer to us.
