The Netherlands – also referred to as Holland or by many as just Amsterdam, is known for its windmills, tulips & a certain green thing that is kinda legal there.
The country is also known for the vast number of cyclists, cheeses & beers.
There are complete Netherlands-dedicated blogs out there because there is so much to do in the country.
While I am Dutch myself and could have started such a blog myself… I am more interested in the world… especially SIM cards 🤓.
But I can assure you there is no reason to be bored in the Netherlands.
What certainly will not bore you is you dealing with an expensive international roaming bill because you forgot to turn data roaming off.
International roaming can be expensive, which is why I always recommend local SIM cards, like a Dutch one, so that you can enjoy local rates.
So, how much do SIM cards cost in the Netherlands?
You can get a Dutch SIM card for 4.99 EUR (5.35 USD) from KPN, between 5 EUR and 30 EUR (5.35 and 32.10 USD) from Vodafone & 10 EUR (10.70 USD) from Odido (formerly T-Mobile) in their stores and from resellers, like convenience stores and grocery stores. The MVNOs Lebara and Lycamobile) sell SIM cards between 5 EUR and 288 EUR (5.35 and 308.20 USD). SIM cards are also sold at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and Eindhoven Airport (EIN).
Worry not, the 288 EUR SIM card includes a plan valid for two years.
Imagine if that was the cost of only the SIM card 🤪.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in the Netherlands. Let's go.

What is the Best SIM Card in the Netherlands?
So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?
The Netherlands has three mobile operators and eight Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:
- Odido (formerly T-Mobile Netherlands)
- KPN
- Vodafone Netherlands
- AH Mobiel (KPN MVNO)
- ALDI TALK Netherlands (KPN MVNO)
- Jumbo Mobiel (KPN MVNO)
- Kruidvat Mobiel (KPN MVNO)
- Lebara Netherlands (KPN MVNO)
- L-Mobi Mobile Netherlands (KPN MVNO)
- Lycamobile Netherlands (KPN MVNO)
- Ortel Mobile Netherlands (KPN MVNO)
In this guide, I will stick to the mobile operators and the most popular MVNOs, all in bold above, to limit the length of this guide (but also not to overwhelm you with all the options available).
But if you are interested in getting a SIM card from one of the unbolded MVNOs, you would have to do the research yourself for the time being. I stopped actively testing and reviewing MVNOs to spend time reviewing travel eSIMs instead, like the ones for the Netherlands.
Anyone living in or visiting the Netherlands can buy a Dutch SIM card with no real restrictions.

(Travel) eSIMs for the Netherlands
In recent years, (travel) eSIMs have become extremely popular.
Especially after Apple made iPhones (14- & 15 series) sold in the United States eSIM-only, forcing its users to use eSIMs – even when abroad.
As a result, the adoption of eSIM technology by mobile operators worldwide rose impressively quickly.
Currently, no Dutch mobile operator offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.
In my the Netherlands eSIM buying guide, I analyze various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide (even in the Netherlands).
Surprisingly, travel eSIMs can be cheaper than a Dutch SIM card or eSIM in specific scenarios.
Moreover, Europe-wide and global eSIM options are also available at competitive prices (without having to deal with expensive international roaming rates).
In this the Netherlands SIM card buying guide (the one you are reading), I will stick to the local SIM cards and eSIM, but you can read my the Netherlands eSIM buying guide for more information about travel eSIMs covering the country.
But here is a quick overview already + applicable discount codes if you are interested in purchasing a travel eSIM for the Netherlands:
- Airalo: Hé Hé (the Netherlands only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + up to 200 worldwide minutes & 200 worldwide SMS)
- Alosim: Netherlands & Europe (32 countries)
- Holafly: Netherlands & Europe (32 countries) – all variants in both options include unlimited data + up to 120 Europe-wide calls
- Nomad: Netherlands, Europe (30 or 35 countries, depending on the variant) & Global (109 or 139 countries, depending on the variant)
Here are some discount codes to sweeten the deal:
- Airalo: MAR15 for 15% off (if you have never bought an Airalo eSIM before). Otherwise, MAR10 for 10% off (for existing users) – only the first 3000 users can redeem either discount code)
- Alosim: PTW for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
- Holafly: PHONETRAVELWIZ for 5% off (as many times as you wish for as many eSIMs as you want)
- Nomad: ADU123 for 3 USD off (on your first-ever Nomad order only)
Once again, check out my the Netherlands eSIM buying guide to learn more about these eSIM options.
The eSIM guide is as comprehensive as this SIM card buying guide, but it solely focuses on travel eSIMs (while the guide you are reading focuses on local SIM cards and eSIMs for prepaid users (where applicable).

KPN
KPN is the second-largest mobile operator in the Netherlands.
As of 2021, KPN is the fastest (5G NR) mobile operator in the country.
And it is also the mobile operator with the best overall network.
While this is all good news, KPN throttles prepaid speeds to up to 25 Mbps – and that also applies to its KPN MVNOs.
And (un)fortunately, all MVNOs easily accessible to travelers are KPN MVNOs.
And I say up to – you will often have to deal with even slower speeds.
What is funny is that when you roam on the KPN network, like with the Hè Hè Airalo eSIM, you will get much faster speeds than with KPN prepaid.
KPN uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz
- 3G: N/A – shut down in March 2022
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 1500 MHz (Band 32), 1800 MHz (Band 3), 2100 MHz (Band 1) & 2600 MHz (Band 7 & Band 38)
- 5G NR: 700 MHz (n28) & 2100 MHz (n1) – not for prepaid… yet
- VoLTE: Yes (but not for prepaid)
- VoWiFi: Yes (but not for prepaid)

You will get 7.50 EUR bonus credit after registering your SIM card on the KPN Prepaid app.
- Find out how much SIM cards cost in every country, including data-only SIM cards and tourist SIM cards, offered by each mobile operator + information about starter benefits (lookup tool)
While KPN does have eSIMs, they are (currently) not offered to prepaid customers.
You may want to get a travel eSIM for the Netherlands, which can be cheaper than getting a SIM card from KPN (in some cases).
Especially when getting a Europe-wide eSIM if you do not stay in just the Netherlands or a global eSIM valid for up to a year if you want one eSIM to work practically worldwide.
My Netherlands eSIM buying guide analyzes various eSIM options of eSIM providers I have tested extensively worldwide.
Here is a quick introduction to them:
- Airalo: Hé Hé (Netherlands only), Eurolink (39 countries in Europe) & Discover+ (130 countries worldwide + call and text feature) – use code MAR15 (15% off – first-time users only) or MAR10 (10% off)
- Alosim: Netherlands & Europe (32 countries) – use code PTW (5% off – no limits)
- Holafly: Netherlands & Europe (32 countries) – these eSIMs have unlimited data + calling feature – use code PHONETRAVELWIZ (5% off – no limits)
- Nomad: Netherlands, Europe (up to 35 countries) & Global (up to 139 countries) – use code ADU123 (3 USD off – first-time users only)
For more information, such as the prices and data allowances, check out my Netherlands eSIM buying guide.
But let's continue with KPN for now.
