It should be illegal to be bored in the Czech Republic.
One thing that will rarely be cheap, including in the Czech Republic, is international roaming.
It can be crazy expensive.
That is why you should get local SIM cards when traveling, like a Czech one, so that you can enjoy local rates.
However… SIM cards are not cheap in the Czech Republic, but they are not crazy expensive either (looking at you, Cuba).
You can get a Czech SIM card for 150 CZK (6.50 USD) from T-Mobile, 179 CZK (7.75 USD) from O2 & 200 CZK (8.65 USD) from Vodafone in their stores and from resellers, like newsstands. The MVNOs sell SIM cards for between 100 CZK (4.35 USD) and 500 CZK (21.65 USD). Vodafone also sells SIM cards at Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG).
While there are many countries with higher SIM card prices, many have much cheaper ones (some are free to almost free).
One amazing thing about the Czech Republic is that you have a lot of choices because of the number of MVNOs in the Czech market.
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in the Czech Republic. Let's do this.

What is the Best SIM Card in the Czech Republic?
If you want to buy the best SIM card in the Czech Republic, I recommend going with T-Mobile or Vodafone. T-Mobile has the fastest network. Vodafone has, overall, the best network.
So, who are all these mobile operators and what options are available for you?
The Czech Republic has three mobile operators and eight Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) offering prepaid services easily accessible to tourists:
- T-Mobile Czech Republic
- O2 Czech Republic
- Vodafone Czech Republic
- BLESKmobil (O2 Czech Republic MVNO)
- COOP Mobil Czech Republic (Vodafone Czech Republic MVNO)
- Kaktus (T-Mobile Czech Republic)
- MOBIL.CZ (T-Mobile Czech Republic)
- OpenCall Mobile (O2 Czech Republic MVNO)
- Oskarta (Vodafone Czech Republic MVNO)

In this guide, I will stick to the mobile operators and the most popular MVNOs, all in bold above, to limit the length of this guide (but also not to overwhelm you with all the options available).
But if you are interested in getting a SIM card from one of the unbolded MVNOs, you would have to do the research yourself for the time being. I stopped actively testing and reviewing MVNOs to spend time reviewing travel eSIMs instead, like the ones for The Czech Republic.
Anyone living in or visiting the Czech Republic can buy a Czech SIM card with no real restrictions.

Where Can You Buy a Czech SIM Card (+Costs)?
You can get a Czech SIM card in T-Mobile, O2 & Vodafone stores. Resellers, like grocery stores and gas stations, also sell SIM cards (especially for COOP Mobil & Tesco Mobile). Some Czech airports sell (tourist) SIM cards (at inflated prices).
You can expect to pay the following for Czech SIM cards:
- T-Mobile Czech Republic: 150 CZK, 200 CZK & 469 CZK
- O2 Czech Republic: 150 CZK, 179 CZK & 299 CZK (regular & data-only for the same price)
- Vodafone Czech Republic: 200 CZK (regular), 499 CZK (data-only) & 649 CZK (data-only)
- COOP Mobil Czech Republic: 200 CZK
- Tesco Mobile Czech Republic: 200 CZK & 499 CZK
Note that SIM cards can be more expensive than those listed above when purchased at an airport.

In recent years, (travel) eSIMs have become extremely popular.
Especially after Apple made iPhones (14- & 15 series) sold in the United States eSIM-only, forcing its users to use eSIMs – even when abroad.

O2 Czech Republic, just O2 but officially O2, is the second-largest mobile operator in the Czech Republic.
While the O2 brand is part of Telefónica, a Spanish telecommunications company active in the Americas (as Altice, Movistar & Vivo) and Europe (as Bouygues Telecom, Movistar & O2).
O2 in the Czech Republic is owned by PFF. It is a Czech-based investment firm that runs Telenor (officially Norwegian) in Bulgaria, Hungary, Montenegro & Serbia.
O2 uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz

Vodafone Czech Republic, just Vodafone, is the smallest mobile operator in the Czech Republic.
However, it has the best overall network performance.
Vodafone, as a company, is active in Africa (mostly as Vodacom), Asia, Europe, the Middle East & Oceania.
Vodafone uses the following frequencies:
- 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
- 3G: N/A – shut down in November 2021 – (mostly) reframed for 4G/LTE
- 4G/LTE: 800 MHz (Band 20), 900 MHz (Band 8), 1800 MHz (Band 3), 2100 MHz (Band 1) & 2600 MHz (Band 7)
- 5G NR: 1800 MHz (n3), 2100 MHz (n1) & 3700 MHz (n78)

Vodafone has extensive coverage throughout the Czech Republic.
It also has the most extensive 5G NR coverage.

SIM Card Price – Vodafone Czech Republic
You can buy a Vodafone SIM card for 200 CZK with 200 CZK credit in Vodafone stores and from resellers, including grocery stores, kiosks & gas stations. The Data SIM for Visitors is sold for 499 CZK/649 CZK with 10 GB/20 GB of data in Vodafone stores only. Vodafone SIM cards are also sold at Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG).
While the data-only SIM cards are called Data SIM for Visitors, they are sold to anyone – including Czech citizens and foreigners living in the Czech Republic.
But… they are certainly not the cheapest options for those actually living in the country (you are better off with postpaid plans).
Anyway, below is an overview of the two Data SIM for Visitor SIM cards:

You may have to make a call or send an SMS to activate your Vodafone SIM card.

It is also possible to get a Vodafone eSIM for the same price as a regular SIM card.
However, it is unclear if eSIMs are available for prepaid customers too.
I initially wrote that I would confirm this after visiting the Czech Republic again mid-January (2022), but I forgot to ask 💀.
You should consider getting a travel eSIM for the Czech Republic because they can sometimes be cheaper than getting a SIM card from Vodafone.
Especially if you get a Europe-wide eSIM or a global eSIM.

Vodafone top-up vouchers are sold in Vodafone stores, grocery stores, corner shops & electronics shops throughout the Czech Republic.
Every top-up extends the validity of your Vodafone SIM card by 10 months.
To top up your Vodafone SIM card, text DOBIJ VOD VoucherCode to 7700 or dial *77 and follow the instructions.
For example, if your voucher code is 123456, you would text DOBIJ VOD 123456 to 7700.
You can also tell the salesperson how much credit you want, your phone number, pay, and they will top up your SIM card with the POS system.
You can also recharge online with (international/EU) debit and credit cards.
Dial *122 or text KOLIK KREDIT to 7700 to check your Vodafone balance.
You can also top up and check your balance on the Můj Vodafone (My Vodafone) app (Android/iOS).

The Prepaid Card 30 Offer is not a typical plan. Instead, it is an offer (as if you did not know that).
If you spent 30 CZK on data, calls, or SMS without a plan but on standard Pay As You Go (PAYG) rates, you will get up to 400 MB (with 5G NR access), unlimited local minutes & unlimited local SMS for the remainder of the day.
These are the PAYG rates:
- 3 CZK for 10 MB
- 3 CZK for 1 minute
- 3 CZK for 1 SMS
If you spent the 30 CZK on calls or SMS, you would get 400 MB for free for the remainder of the day.
If 30 CZK was entirely spent on data, you would get only 300 MB for free (or 400 MB minus the PAYG data usage).
