Turkey: Best Tourist eSIMs Reviewed (2024)

Türkiye (Turkey) – the gateway between (Southeastern) Europe and (Western) Asia, with a small part of the country being considered to be in Europe and the remainder of the land in Asia.

Known for its sweet, sweet tea, famous kebabs, and for being an affordable travel destination, Turkey is a popular country to visit by travelers of all kinds.

From the busy streets in Istanbul to the Roman ruins in Antalya, from the hot air balloon festival in Cappadocia to Bodrum Castle in Bodrum, the country hosts everything for anyone.

And of course… plenty of cool beaches.

Be careful with with international roaming though – International roaming can be expensive, which is why using local and travel eSIMs is recommended to save money.

Not only will you save a lot of money by doing so, you do not have to deal with SIM card registration laws, which are often invasive (which includes Turkey).

How much will a local or travel eSIM for Turke cost you?

You can get an eSIM for Turkey for as little as 4.75 USD and up to 99 USD from Airalo (Merhaba), Holafly, Nomad & SimCorner.

I will also introduce you to a few global eSIMs that be used in Turkey and 80+ other countries, including Turkey's neighbors, for competitive rates.

In a Hurry? A Quick Introduction

I will write about seven eSIM options in Turkey (and explain why they are included).

But if you want to quickly check out what the best eSIMs are for Turkey without my analysis and explanations, here is an overview of the eSIMs covered in this guide:

Note: the promo codes mentioned above can also be used for regional and global eSIMs (they are not restricted to country-specific eSIMs only). In other news, the eSIM providers are in alphabetical order per grouping (Turkey-only, regional & global) – not in order of preference (you would have to read the complete guide to find out which eSIMs I love the most for Turkey 😜).

Let's truly get started, shall we?

Airalo Merhaba eSIM for Turkey

Airalo Logo

Airalo is probably a name you have heard of when researching travel eSIMs worldwide – perhaps even for Turkey.

That is because it is the largest and oldest eSIM platform worldwide, covering around 190 countries (more than any other eSIM platform out there).

Its extensive worldwide coverage attracted me to Airalo early on – even when I did not have an eSIM-compatible phone and had to use my dad's phone for testing purposes.

He did not like me stealing his phone so often… so I eventually got my own 🗿.

Anyway, Airalo has an eSIM that can be used in Turkey – it is called Merhaba.

It is impossible for Airalo, or any other mobile operator, to operate in every country (and do not trust any company saying otherwise), so they set up roaming agreements.

Yes, I said roaming, but this is not the type of international roaming that will result in a 3000 USD roaming bill – do not worry!

What Airalo does, and basically all mobile operators do, is partner up with a local mobile operator so that their customers can still stay connected when abroad.

Türk Telekom
© Türk Telekom

In the case of Turkey, Airalo's Merhaba eSIM uses the Türk Telekom network up to 4G/LTE (no 5G NR yet, unfortunately.

Türk Telekom has the second-fastest speeds in Turkey, so you know you will have a smooth network experience with the Merhaba eSIM.

Be aware: most travel eSIMs, including Airalo's Turkey Merhaba eSIM, are data-only eSIMs, so you cannot call or text with them (nor can you receive any calls or SMS).

Anyway, the following six Airalo Turkey Merhaba eSIMs are available:

  1. Turkey/Merhaba 1 GB eSIM for 7 days, costing 4.50 USD
  2. Turkey/Merhaba 2 GB eSIM for 15 days, costing 6.50 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  3. Turkey/Merhaba 3 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 8 USD
  4. Turkey/Merhaba 5 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 12 USD – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  5. Turkey/Merhaba 10 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 18 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  6. Turkey/Merhaba 20 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 26 USD

Note: Phone Travel Wiz reader popularity ranking was updated in December based on data up to the 30th of December (2023 data only). The (promotional) prices were updated on the 31st of January.

Airalo Turkey Merhaba eSIM with Prices
See the list above for up-to-date prices and allowances. The figures in this image may be outdated.

I can already tell you that Airalo has the cheapest eSIM options for Turkey in this guide.

What makes things even more pleasant is that you can top up your eSIM when it is expiring or when you are out of data without the need to purchase a new eSIM.

But you may think that a local SIM card or eSIM will (still) be cheaper than Airalo or any other travel eSIM.

And you are right – that is true in most cases.

However, you will have to deal with the Turkish SIM card registration laws.

(Why does this matter? Because hackers can steal your (critical) personal data if the mobile operator does not secure your data properly, like what happened in Australia (10 million Optus customers affected, where info, like passport numbers, were stolen (including mine – luckily not my passport number but my boyfriend was not as lucky) or Indonesia (1.3 billion SIM card-related data was hacked)).

Most mobile operators will only sell you (overpriced) tourist SIM cards or the most expensive plans because of “mandatory top-up requirements” (which are often lies to take more of your money anyway).

  • Find out which countries have SIM card registration regulations and what is required from you (lookup tool)
SIM Card Registration Worldwide Tool by Phone Travel Wiz

So while you technically could get cheaper plans, the question is whether you can actually get them or not.

Anyway, you should be aware that while you can get up to 4G/LTE connection with the Airalo Turkey Merhaba eSIM, your speeds will most likely not be faster than someone using a local SIM card.

That is because you are roaming on the Türk Telekom network instead of being native customers.

But that does not mean you will have (extremely) slow speeds – just slower than native customers.

Anyway, the Airalo Turkey Merhaba eSIM is fantastic and is the eSIM I, and many Phone Travel Wiz readers, recommend the most.

The eSIMs are affordable, the data allowances can be tailored to your needs (1 GB to 10 GB + top-ups are available) & you will have a smooth network experience (in most cases).

Holafly eSIM for Turkey

Another eSIM provider I recommend is Holafly.

It started something revolutionary in June 2022.

You can now get unlimited data plans for Turkey, several other Asian countries, almost all European Union member states (except for Liechtenstein) & a few other countries, like Canada and the United States.

From what I know, Holafly is the first to offer unlimited data plans for so many countries – and that is super exciting!

Now, I have to say that the unlimited data plans offered by Holafly are more expensive than the Airalo Merhaba eSIM or eSIMs sold by Nomad or SimCorner.

But if you do not want to worry about data allowances, Holafly is the one to go for.

Phone Travel Wiz x Holafly Banner

You have the following eight options with Holafly:

  1. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 5 days, costing 19 USD – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  2. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 7 days, costing 27 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  3. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 10 days, costing 34 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  4. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 15 days, costing 47 USD
  5. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 20 days, costing 54 USD
  6. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 30 days, costing 64 USD
  7. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 60 days, costing 84 USD
  8. Turkey unlimited data eSIM for 90 days, costing 99 USD

As I recently started my collaboration with Holafly, it offers 5% off each purchase whenever you use code PHONETRAVELWIZ – how cool is that?

Nomad eSIMs for Turkey

I am going to be straight with you – you probably shoud not get the Nomad Turkey eSIM.

So why do I even bother including them in this guide?

It is because Nomad generally is good… where its plans are reasonably priced.

For example, Nomad lowered its prices for a handful of East- and Southeast Asian countries, making them the cheapest option for those countries (compared to Airalo, Holafly & SimCorner).

In most of Europe and North America, it is competitive.

In other countries in Africa, most of the Americas, the Caribbean, non-European Union member states & Oceania (except for Australia and New Zealand), the prices are honestly criminal.

Let me explain.

The 1 GB variant valid for 7 days costs 20 USD.

For a little less (8 USD), Airalo's Turkey Merhaba eSIM will give you 3 GB of data. For a bit more (12 USD), you can use 5 GB of data.

Nomad Turkey eSIMs

What about the 3 GB variant valid for 30 days? It costs 48 USD.

For 18 USD, the Airalo Turkey Merhaba eSIM will give you 10 GB for 30 days.

SimCorner's Turkey eSIM with 6 GB of data for 15 days costs only 36 USD.

You can also get unlimited data for 15 days from Holafly for 47 USD instead – and that is all before the discounts you get when using promo code PHONETRAVELWIZ (works for both Holafly and SimCorner).

So why spend 48 USD for just 3 GB of data? I do not know.

So once again, why do I even bother mentioning Nomad for Turkey?

It is because I believe, but mostly hope, that Nomad will eventually drop its prices for Turkey.

As I mentioned earlier, Nomad dropped its prices for various Asian countries, making them the cheapest.

It also introduced a 2 GB variant for some of said countries, offering more options at competitive rates, on request of Phone Travel Wiz readers.

And, upon my request, it introduced the Nordics eSIM, which can be used in Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden.

So yes, I am in close contact with Nomad, but my contact there told me that their intermediary, Truphone, has no plans on dropping prices for Turkey yet, which is why the Nomad Turkey eSIMs are criminal.

Once this changes, I will update this section, but I wanted to let you know that Nomad is a good eSIM reseller – it is just expensive for Turkey (for now), unfortunately.

If you plan on visiting other countries and are considering Nomad, use code ADU123 on the site or their apps and get 3 USD/2.75 EUR/2.35 GBP/4 CAD off (even on top of (some) ongoing promotions)!

But during certain promotions where you are required to enter a code for a discount (let's say Tuesdays (web sales only) or public holidays), the discount you get for these special promotions will be more than the 3 USD off with codes ADU123. I suggest using those codes instead for extra savings – I will not blame you for it 😏.

Local Turkey eSIM for Prepaid Customers

If you want the best and full network experience, including being able to call and text, you want to get a local eSIM.

You have three mobile operators in Turkey: Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye & Türk Telekom.

Currently, no Turkish mobile operator offers eSIMs to prepaid customers.

For more information about the plans offered by Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey & Türk Telekom, check out my Turkey SIM card buying guide.

International eSIM for Turkey & More Countries

Okay, I went over the Turkey travel eSIM options offered by Airalo, Holafly, Nomad & SimCorner.

As expected, these eSIMs can only be used in Turkey and not in neighboring Bahrain, Iran, Saudi Arabia, or the United Arab Emirates.

So what if you plan on visiting any of those countries, or you are on a world tour and wish to use one eSIM in multiple countries – do you have any other options?

Yes, you do. Airalo, Nomad & SimCorner have regional, global & international eSIMs covering at least 80 countries; some include Turkey too.

So let's see which multi-country eSIMs can be used in Turkey and other countries, including Turkey's neighbors.

Airalo Menalink eSIM

Airalo recently introduced an eSIM for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): Menalink. The Menalink eSIM follows the popular Eurolink eSIM for 39 European countries, the fairly new Asialink eSIM for 14 Asian countries & the super new Latamlink eSIM for 19 Latin American countries.

The Menalink eSIM comes in three variants: 1 GB/7 daysmost popular with PTW readers, 2 GB/15 days & 3 GB/30 daysvery popular with PTW readers, to be used in Turkey and 14 other Middle Eastern and Northern African countries:

  • Bahrain
  • Egypt
  • Iran
  • Iraq 1
  • Israel
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • Morocco
  • Oman
  • Palestine 1
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Sudan
  • Tunisia 1
  • United Arab Emirates

Below is an overview of how much each Menalink eSIM costs:

  1. Middle East and North Africa/Menalink 1 GB eSIM for 7 days, costing 15 USD – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  2. Middle East and North Africa/Menalink 2 GB eSIM for 15 days, costing 28 USD
  3. Middle East and North Africa/Menalink 3 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 39 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers

Note: Phone Travel Wiz reader popularity ranking was updated in July based on data up to the 8th of July (2023 data only).

Sometimes, it can be more convenient and cheaper to get the Menalink eSIM than the local Airalo eSIM because Menalink offers more data (instead of you having to purchase multiple 1 GB/7 days top-ups to stay connected).

With the Menalink eSIM, you can save a lot of money by skipping the initial SIM card costs per country you visit in the Middle East and North Africa!

Airalo Eurolink eSIM

You have not undoubtedly read of Airalo's Eurolink eSIM, as it is the most popular Europe travel eSIM out there (yes, even its competitors cannot match… yet – and Phone Travel Wiz readers love this eSIM too).

Not only because Airalo may have been the first with such a regional European eSIM but also because of how easy it is to travel across Europe and how convenient it is.

And since it had this eSIM, Airalo keeps improving on it.

For example, more countries are covered today, with Andorra and Switzerland being the newest additions (for now).

And you get FREE 5G NR access in more than half of the supported countries.

So, in how many countries can this Airalo Eurolink eSIM be used? 39 European countries, including Turkey.

And that includes all member states of the European Union.

Alosim Europe eSIM

Alosim Logo

Alosim has had several Europe-related eSIMs for a while.

These are the Eastern Europe eSIM (11 countries), Mediterranean eSIM (six countries), Scandinavia (4 countries), United Kingdom and Ireland & Western Europe (four countries).

No other eSIM provider in this guide has split European eSIMs like this… and I actually do not recommend them.

Nomad has its Nordic eSIM… and I can tell you it is the least popular regional eSIM Nomad has (and I am surprised it has not pulled it yet).

So after pushing Alosim for literal months, it finally introduced the Europe eSIM in July 2023, covering 32 countries.

This includes most countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland & Sweden are not covered), Jersey, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey & the United Kingdom.

Unlike some European eSIMs mentioned in this guide, 5G NR access is not widely available with this eSIM yet (only in Croatia (Telemach), the Czech Republic (O2), Greece (Nova) & Portugal (NOS)).

But Alosim has promised me they are working on it (and so far, it has delivered on many promises made to me, which is why I love working so closely with Alosim, to be honest!).

The Alosim Europe eSIM can be used in the following 32 countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia 1
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic 1
  • Estonia
  • France
  • Germany

Airalo Discover(+) eSIM (formerly Discover Global)

Airalo Discover eSIM

Airalo Discover+ eSIM

Airalo was probably the first eSIM provider to introduce a global eSIM – it was called Discover Global.

Discover Global eSIM Airalo
© Airalo

I have had decent to good experiences with that eSIM, but I felt it could improve.

Such as extending the validity of most plans (maximum used to be 180 days) and having 5G NR access in popular destinations (like many regional Airalo eSIMs do nowadays, even country-specific ones).

In August 2023, Airalo made a radical change to its global eSIM.

Until then, the eSIM could be used in about 85 countries – always up to 4G/LTE (with some networks on 3G only).

This eSIM was powered by FL1 Telecom Liechtenstein (network name can be Mobilkom (Liechtenstein) at times).

FL1 Liechtenstein Telecom Logo

This mobile operator worked well in Europe and some Asian countries, but it was often one of the slowest performing (Airalo eSIMs).

Now, Airalo's global eSIM is called Discover(+).

Airalo Discover eSIM

Airalo Discover+ eSIM

It is powered by eSIM Go (which is basically Drei Austria).

eSIM Go Logo

Three (3) Logo

The difference between the Airalo Discover and Airalo Discover+ eSIMs is that the latter has calling and texting functionalities (with an Austrian +43 phone number).

Because of this, Discover+ eSIMs can be up to 20 USD more expensive than regular Discover eSIMs.

For the previous Airalo Discover Global eSIMs, you paid the same prices as the Discover+ eSIMs for worse availability (85+ countries instead of 125+) and no calling or texting at all.

So… it is an upgrade 😎.

Not only that, but you (finally) get 5G NR access in quite some countries (55+)1 as well.

1 click here, press select the variant you want & click on network to see which network(s) allow for 5G NR access. You often have access to multiple local networks, but not all have 5G NR access (and some do not even give you 4G/LTE access)

Airalo Discover(+) eSIM Network Availability (3G-4G-5G)

Moreover, the most expensive option is now valid for a whole year (365 days) instead of 180 days.

Interested in using the Airalo Discover(+) eSIM in another country or countries? Read my Airalo Global eSIM review (tested in numerous countries and counting).

Before Airalo updated its global eSIM, I used the old version (Discover Global) in 15+ countries. From August 2023, I will only test the Discover+ eSIM. This is why some country-specific reviews (like Global in Japan) still refer to the Discover Global one and show the old eSIM image instead of Discover+.

1 with 5G NR access

If you get this eSIM from SimOptions, which I recommend, you will pay 39.90 USD.

The main issue I have with the AIS eSIM2FLY Global eSIM is its short validity.

Making it hard to call it an actual global eSIM… unless you can somehow visit 140+ countries within 15 days – something not even I can do🧐.

Still, it is a relatively affordable global eSIM covering 140+ countries… with 5G NR access!

Nomad Global eSIM (5G NR Access in Turkey)

Nomad eSIMs Logo

Besides Nomad's eSIM for Turkey, it also has a global eSIM that can be used in Turkey and a total of 109/139 countries (including most European ones).

While Nomad's Global eSIM covers a few more countries than Airalo's Discover(+) eSIMs (109/139 vs. 130 (previously 85+)), it is significantly more expensive than Airalo (but not the most costly global eSIM in this guide).

Even so, Phone Travel Wiz readers have shown interest in this eSIM and have had positive experiences with it, especially after Nomad improved it (with its 139 Country Plan powered by eSIM Go (has 5G NR access in 50+ countries) instead of the 109 Country Plan by Truphone (4G/LTE only).

Anyway, you have these six Nomad Global eSIMs:

  1. Global (109 Countries Plan) 1 GB eSIM for 7 days, costing 25 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  2. Global (139 Countries Plan) 1 GB eSIM for 7 days, costing 19 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  3. Global (109 Countries Plan) 3 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 40 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  4. Global (139 Countries Plan) 3 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 40 USD – very popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  5. Global (109 Countries Plan) 5 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 45 USD – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers
  6. Global (139 Countries Plan) 5 GB eSIM for 30 days, costing 57 USD – most popular with Phone Travel Wiz readers

Note: Phone Travel Wiz reader popularity ranking was updated in December based on data up to the 30th of December (2023 data only).

Buying a SIM Card in Turkey

Want to just use a SIM card but not your current one because roaming will be criminally expensive?

Consider getting a Turkish SIM card instead – local SIM cards are the cheapest way to stay connected abroad.

Or you can get the SimCorner Turkey SIM card, which will be delivered to your home before going to Turkey – convenient 😏.
