Nomad eSIM Review: My Hands-On Experience in 25+ Countries

In early 2022, I received an email from a sales manager from a company called Nomad I had never heard of before.

As I get a lot of spam emails daily, which you can probably relate to, I was skeptical.

The email told me Nomad is a new company selling eSIMs for more than 100 countries and asked if I was interested in trying one of their eSIMs out.

Well, I gave Nomad a shot… and it was a good decision because I have had plenty of good experience with its eSIMs in more than 25 countries so far.

But why would you consider a travel eSIM from Nomad specifically when so many other options exist?

Mostly because it has competitive prices for eSIMs for East- and Southeast Asia, Europe, North America & Oceania.

In fact, Nomad is sometimes cheaper than other big names out there while still offering excellent service.

And this is fantastic for the budget-savvy travelers among us.

In the past years, Nomad has grown a lot.

Not just in sales numbers but also in its offering and service – and it has been great to be part of its journey.

Especially when its managers take my feedback to heart so that Nomad can improve its eSIMs even more for you (which it has done many times so far).

So in this review, I will give you a general, yet in-depth, analysis of Nomad's offering.

And because I do not want this review to be 30 000+ words long, I will not do in-depth country-specific eSIM analysis here.

You would have to go to my Nomad reviews page to learn about them.

But this review will practically answer all your questions about Nomad eSIMs.

At the same time, I throw in my experiences and recommendations here and there (including when you should not get an Airalo eSIM).

So, here is my Nomad review based on using its eSIMs in more than 25 countries over two years – let's get started.

Which Phones are Compatible with Nomad eSIMs?

I assume you have a faint idea of what Nomad is, what eSIMs are & how to install them.

So I will skip straight to which phones can use Nomad's eSIMs to save you some fluff and time.

Your phone may support eSIM, but the local mobile operator and travel eSIM provider, like Nomad, first needs to certify a phone before the users can use their products.

Well, not really with Nomad eSIMs because it claims that every eSIM-compatible phone can use its eSIMs.

So that makes things easy 😎.

But the image will still give you an overview of the most popular phones that support eSIM.

As of August 2023, the phones shown in the infographic below are compatible with Nomad eSIMs:

Nomad eSIM Compatible Devices List Infographic (August 2023 Edition) by Phone Travel Wiz

You can even install Nomad eSIMs on some tablets and laptops, surprisingly.

But I know most readers are interested in using Nomad eSIMs on their phones, so I will not list the other compatible devices here.

But you can read about them on the Nomad site instead (but just remember to come back to this review to finish it!).

Nomad APN Settings

Okay, I said I would not go over the Nomad SIM installation steps because you will manage (even as a first-time eSIM user).

But the APN settings, standing for Access Point Name, can cause some issues with a handful of eSIMs.

In most cases, your APN will be set automatically and correctly after installing your Nomad eSIM.

This could be fastaccess (Global1SIM), globaldata (Global1SIM), internet (Telna/Nomad), mobile (JoyTelecom) & truphone.com (Truphone), depending on the eSIM and country.

And that is of your chosen installation method (copying and pasting the activation key or scanning the QR Code (recommended)).

How to know which APN to use if it was somehow not automatically set up?

Open the eSIM you purchase on the Nomad site or app and check what it says under provider.

Nomad Netherlands eSIM Provider and APN Settings (Truphone)

For the Netherlands eSIM in the example above, the provider is Truphone, so the APN should be truphone.com.

In Hong Kong and Singapore, I tried Nomad's updated (and cheaper) APAC eSIM by JoyTelecom.

So the APN for this eSIM was mobile.

Nomad APN eSIM Provider and APN Settings (JoyTelecom)

For Global1SIM eSIMs, the default APN is globaldata.

If that does not work, try fastaccess instead.

But in most cases, you should not have to tinker with your APN settings.

How Much do Nomad eSIMs Cost?

Depending on the country you are visiting and the data allowance you want, you can get a Nomad eSIM for as little as 4 USD with 1 GB of data for three days up to 240 USD with 100 GB for 30- or 60 days for select Asian, European & North American destinations.

>>> Get your Nomad eSIM and use code “ADU123” for 3 USD/2.70 EUR/2.40 GBP/4.05 CAD off! <<<

In the next section, you will learn how many countries Nomad is active in (spoiler: 115).

But I cannot give you an in-depth overview of each country – else, this review would be way too long.

Luckily, I have written 190+ eSIM country guides with the best travel eSIMs covering said countries (and you know Nomad is included in many of them).

Just use the search function on the left side of your screen or click on the search button top right corner of the menu.

Or click this link to see all my Nomad-related guides and reviews (from newest to oldest – not ordered on popularity).

An example of such a guide is the Singapore eSIM buying guide, covering the best Singapore eSIMs.

Where Nomad offers a whopping 12 different data plans, ranging from 1 GB for three days to 100 GB for 60 days.

As a result, Phone Travel Wiz readers flock to Nomad's Singapore eSIMs instead of its competitors (as per Phone Travel Wiz readers based on 2023 data).

Or the Europe eSIM, which can be used in 35 European countries (which I have tested in eight countries so far).

Nomad Europe eSIM Review by Phone Travel Wiz

Anyway, some countries have 12 eSIM options, while others only have three (yes, Nomad always gives you at least three options).

If I were to multiply all those options by 115 countries, this review would be excessively long, and you would fall asleep before you could finish it 🗿.

But I will tell you all countries Nomad covers in the next section instead 😎.

In Which Countries Can Nomad eSIMs Be Used?

Nomad sells data eSIMs in 115 countries worldwide in every inhabited continent.

And that is quite impressive, I have to say.

In late 2022, Nomad added eSIM for various Oceanian countries, which no other travel eSIM provider used to cover then (which may do now).

But some eSIMs covered by Nomad are very expensive, but more about that later.

At the time of writing, Nomad sells eSIMs for the following 115 countries:

That is quite a list, is it not? 🤯

But how is it possible for Nomad to be active in so many countries?

It is impossible for Nomad, or any other mobile operator, to operate in every country (and do not trust any company saying otherwise), so they set up roaming agreements.

And do not get worried by the word roaming yet – roaming can be expensive, but roaming with Nomad or many other travel eSIM providers, will not result in a 5000 USD roaming bill.

What Nomad does, and basically all (actual) mobile operators do, is partner up with a local mobile operator so that their customers can still stay connected when abroad.

When I mentioned the APN settings, I already introduced you to Nomad's roaming partners.

Previously, Truphone was Nomad's main partner.

Truphone Logo
© Truphone

And it had, and still has, some expensive plans (where you pay 20 USD for 1 GB of data for select destinations).

In late 2022, Nomad partnered with JoyTelecom, allowing it to offer more generous data plans in primarily East- and Southeast Asia, Oceania, the United Kingdom & the United States.

JoyTelecom Logo
© JoyTelecom

And when I say generous data allowances, I am talking about 100 GB for 60 days 😳.

Mostly because JoyTelecom already has plenty of (favorable) roaming agreements with those mobile operators, which would be hard for Nomad to set up themselves.

Especially knowing that some mobile operators, like ALDImobile Australia, charge you about 1 USD per MB used abroad (yes, per MB – not GB).

Quite a deal, right!? 🤯

And this may beg the question: will your speeds not be slower with Nomad than by going with the local mobile operator itself?

Yes, your speeds will be (significantly) slower with most Nomad eSIMs than the roaming partner itself, although they are often fast enough for general data browsing anyway.

Plus, my current top speed with a Nomad eSIM was 182.59 Mbps in Australia (at King George Square Station in Brisbane to be exact), so you should not be expecting snail speeds.

Well, somewhat because Nomad eSIMs are almost always slower than other competing travel eSIMs.

A good example is Hong Kong, where I used both the Nomad Hong Kong and Nomad APAC eSIMs.

Somehow, the top speed was 47.36 Mbps when both eSIMs used the CSL Mobile network.

CSL Hong Kong Logo
© CSL Mobile

Some competing eSIMs used the same network and got top speeds of up to 243 Mbps.

And I have seen results like this in various other countries too.

That is why I do extensive testing with Nomad eSIMs, including speed tests across cities, to share insights like this with you.

>>> Get your Nomad eSIM and use code “ADU123” for 3 USD/2.70 EUR/2.40 GBP/4.05 CAD off! <<<

So while it indeed would be better for Nomad to have direct roaming agreements with each mobile operator out there instead of with a middleman, like JoyTelecom or Truphone, most are not interested OR charge high rates.

But in some countries it does, like Rogers in Canada.

Anyway, Nomad's current setup has been working well so far, I can tell you!

Which Regional eSIMs Does Nomad Have?

Like many eSIM providers nowadays, Nomad sells regional eSIMs.

Wait… what do I mean by regional? Nomad sells different eSIMs for urban- and rural areas?

No, I do not mean regional in that way.

Instead, you get one eSIM to be used in multiple countries on a continent.

If I am correct, Nomad's first regional eSIM was for Europe, allowing you to use one eSIM in 25 or 35 countries, depending on the chosen plan.

And this Europe eSIM is Nomad's most popular regional eSIM – even with Phone Travel Wiz readers.

Nomad Europe eSIM Eligible Countries Map Infographic by Phone Travel Wiz (August 2023 Version)

Nomad also has regional eSIMs for the APAC (Asia-Pacific) region, Nordics (Northern Europe) & SEA (Southeast Asia)-Oceania).

As you can see, coverage in the Americas, most of Asia, the Caribbean & Oceania is lacking.

Luckily, Nomad has a Global eSIM covering 110 countries in every inhabited continent, including the ones mentioned above.

So you have plenty of options with Nomad.

Which Countries Does Nomad's APAC eSIMs Cover?

The APAC eSIMs can be used in up to 16 Asia-Pacific countries with up to nine options: 1 GB/3 days, 1 GB/7 days, 3 GB/5 days, 3 GB/30 days, 5 GB/10 days, 5 GB/30 days, 10 GB/15 days, 10 GB/30 days, 20 GB/30 days.

One thing to be aware of is that the APAC eSIM is split into three plans: 7 Countries Plan, 12 Countries Plan & 15 Countries Plan.

Nomad APAC eSIMs left
Nomad APAC eSIMs right

Surprisingly, the 15 Countries Plan is not the one with the highest prices (that would be the 7 Countries Plan).

As the names imply, not all plans cover the same countries.

Although each plan covers at least Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore & Thailand.

Previously, Nomad's APAC plans covered only eight countries, including the ones above, at not the lowest prices.

But this has, fortunately, changed as of late 2022.

The APAC 7 Countries Plan eSIM can be used in the following 7 Asia-Pacific countries:

  • Australia
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • Thailand

The Europe eSIMs can be used in up to 35 European countries with four options: 1 GB/7 days, 3 GB/30 days, 5 GB/30 days & 10 GB/30 days.

And Nomad keeps adding new countries to the list and dropping its prices.

Just like the APAC eSIM, you have multiple plan for the Europe eSIM: 31 Countries Plan & 35 Countries Plan.

Which Countries Does Nomad's Nordic eSIMs Cover?

The Nordic eSIMs can be used in four Nordic countries (in Northern Europe) with three options: 1 GB/7 days, 3 GB/30 days & 5 GB/30 days.

The fun thing about this eSIM is that I somewhat jokingly suggested adding such a regional plan in mid-2022 when Nomad hired a new hiring manager.

Well, he took the suggestion seriously and added it within a week or two.

Perhaps other Nomad customers requested such a plan too, but the timing was fantastic.

Now you know why I am a big fan of Nomad 😍 (even though only two Phone Travel Wiz readers have used the eSIM so far 🗿).

But the thing is that the Europe eSIM offers much better value than the Nordic eSIM.

And the Europe ones are slightly cheaper too.

The Nordic eSIM can be used in the following four Nordic countries:

  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Norway
  • Sweden

Which Countries Does Nomad's SEA-Oceania eSIMs Cover?

The SEA-Oceania eSIMs can be used in eight Southeast Asian (SEA) and Oceanian countries with nine options: 1 GB/3 days, 3 GB/5 days, 5 GB/10 days, 10 GB/15 days, 20 GB/30 days, 30 GB/30 days, 40 GB.30 days, 50 GB/30 days & 100 GB/60 days.

This is Nomad's newest regional eSIM and the one with the most generous data allowances.

Previously, the countries covered by this eSIM were the same as Nomad's old APAC eSIM (the one that was semi-expensive and got updated).

Well, Nomad brought the eSIM back, changed its name, dropped the prices & added way more data options.

Honestly, I would love for Nomad to add these data options to all of its eSIMs for roughly the same prices.

It would become one of the, if not the, best eSIM provider in terms of price:data ratios.

The SEA-Oceania eSIM can be used in the following eight Southeast Asian and Oceanian countries:

  • Australia
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand

Nomad vs. Airalo & Holafly – Which One Is Better?

Nomad offers eSIM of great value and the most generous data allowances in East- and Southeast Asia, Oceania, the United Kingdom & the United States. In Europe, it has one of the lowest prices for the region. However, outside these places, Nomad's eSIMs can be crazy expensive (20 USD for 1 GB of data), where Airalo will be significantly cheaper, or Holafly will have better options.

As I mentioned earlier, I also extensively test the eSIMs of Airalo and Holafly (and some other (new) eSIM providers at times) as well to see which one is better for select countries.

Because there is no point in recommending a particular eSIM if I did not compare it with others.

As of mid-June, Nomad has spent much time in making its East- and Southeast Asian plans attractive.

It first started with dropping those countries' prices, then adding additional options.

Then in December 2022, Nomad partnered with JoyTelecom, where it could drop its prices even more WHILE offering more data.

Then in 2023, even more data is added and prices are even lower now – making Nomad probably the cheapest eSIM provider for this region (+Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom & the United States).

Nomad Japan eSIMs

And these generous data plans and low(er) prices will be introduced in Europe very soon. Probably month starting with an M… a… r… 🤫.

But in other regions, you will be charged a whopping 20 USD for 1 GB of data – this may be higher than the standard roaming rates you would pay.

What is more, the countries with the 1 GB/20 USD, 3 GB/48 USD & 5 GB/54 USD prices are not lower than the Nomad Global eSIM because the prices are the same.

Many Phone Travel Wiz readers do not buy Nomad eSIMs for those countries because the prices are criminal.

What some do, however, is get the Nomad Global eSIM instead if they visit multiple countries where the country-specific eSIM and global eSIM have the same prices, like Africa, most of the Americas, many Asian countries, the Caribbean & Oceania.

For those countries, consider Airalos eSIMs instead, as theirs will often be cheaper.

If you have data allowances and want unlimited data plans instead, Holafly will be for you as it has unlimited data eSIMs for more than 45 countries.

My Overall Thoughts About Nomad

Overall, I have had pleasant experiences with Nomad. It offers many eSIMs with numerous variants at competitive prices in the most popular travel destinations. You will also have great reception in urban and regional areas (depending on the roaming partners) & reasonable/blazing-fast speeds.

In popular travel destinations, you probably do not have to worry about your service with Nomad.

You will have reasonable speeds and be on a good network.

I say reasonable, as Nomad eSIMs are often (one of) the slowest of the multiple travel eSIMs I test in a destination.

Often, the speeds are fast enough for general data browsing.

But faster speeds are always appreciated, especially if you can get more than twice the speed for the same price.

Fortunately, Nomad's roaming partners are usually one of the best in the country, resulting in good coverage and reception.

But you may perceive it as bad because your speed will not be as fast as you want, which is a shame.

Luckily, Nomad has always been actively trying to expand its roaming partner portfolio so that we can have a better service with its eSIMs.

I just hope that it will introduce way lower prices for Africa, most of the Americas, many Asian countries, the Caribbean & Oceania because Nomad's competition is outdoing it.

It may be too late if it does not act fast 😱.

But in general, you will be in good hands with Nomad – and be sure to check out my Nomad reviews.
