Can I roam with Vodafone Ghana?

Vodafone customers can roam in 30 destinations in Africa, North America, Europe, the Middle-East, Asia, and Oceania with one of the 41 roaming bundles. The bundles can last for a day up to a full month. The offer prices range from GHS 15 to GHS 7000 depending on the bundle type.

The Daily Passport gives you:

The Weekly Passport gives you:

Can I roam on planes with Vodafone Ghana?

In-flight roaming is available with Vodafone Ghana. I have reached out to Vodafone to get information about the in-flight roaming rates, as they are nowhere to be found on the web. I will update this article as soon as I have some news for you.

Can I roam on cruise ships with Vodafone Ghana?

Maritime roaming with Vodafone Ghana is not possible.

Is roaming with Vodafone Ghana worth it?

Roaming with Vodafone Ghana can be worth it depending on where you are going and the bundle you choose.

Vodafone Ghana does not have any Pay-As-You-Go Roaming rates, meaning that you are forced to get a roaming pack. Although this limits your selection options, it does mean that you do not have to worry about unexpected high roaming charges.

I do find it odd that for the same price, you get more perks with the Asia and the Euro-America monthly offers than the Africa ones. You would expect to get more in Africa because the destinations are closer to Africa. Either way, the Africa, Middle East & Asia, and monthly Euro-America offers do provide good value of money.

I do think that the Voice & Data offers are weak, especially in terms of the data you get. For example, the Euro-America Daily Voice & Data bundle costs GHS 15 and gets you 2 minutes to make calls, 10 minutes to receive calls, and 4 MB. A 2-minute call is nothing, neither is 4 MB of roaming data.

Additionally, only the monthly voice & data bundles include SMS, which is a shame. I would expect to at least get a few SMS with the voice bundles or a few SMS-only bundles. Maybe those will be added in the future.

The Monthly Voice & Data bundles are great because they give you a lot of perks, including SMS. The Euro-America bundles give you the most value of money while the Africa ones the least.

For example, for GHS 500, you get 60 minutes to make calls, 100 minutes to receive calls, 60 SMS, and 400 MB of roaming data in Euro-America destinations. In African destinations, you would get 20 minutes to make calls, 2000 minutes to receive calls, 20 SMS, and 80 MB of roaming data.

Sure, you get much more incoming minutes, but I think it would be much more beneficial if half of those minutes could be transferred to outgoing minutes or more SMS or data.

What about the roaming passports? I would certainly consider them if the destination I am in is covered by the Vodafone Passport. The rates for the passports are cheap (GHS 20 and 50) for 1 day or 7 days. The only issue with these passports are the perks. You get almost nothing out of them compared to the Monthly Voice & Data packs of certain regions.

The worst part of these passports is the data you get for data roaming. 5 MB and 15 MB will run out quickly after a short browsing session. I hope Vodafone will increase the roaming allowance for these passports to make them more attractive. The same counts for the destinations you can use them.

On the other hand, 15 minutes and 10 SMS for one day should be enough. Not sure if 40 minutes and 20 SMS are enough, though, but you can make it last.

If you do not want to roam because you think roaming costs are too high, worry not, you have other alternatives. You could get a local sim, which will get you more for your money and are cheaper. Or you could connect to WIFI hotspots and use internet-based apps like Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, or Skype to stay in touch with friends. That could be a free workaround to avoid roaming costs.

In short, roaming with Vodafone Ghana is worth it. I would be cautious with the daily bundles, as they do not give you that much (albeit being cheap) while the weekly and monthly ones get you much more (and are, understandably, more expensive). The same can be said for the 3-day bundles and the roaming passports. Although the prices are reasonable, you do not get that much out of them. You should consider getting a local sim or an international sim.
