Guam – an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Pacific Ocean. It is closer to Southeast and East Asia and Oceania than mainland United States.
Known for its stunning beaches, crystal clear ocean water, and terrific resorts.
The Northern Mariana Islands – the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is another unincorporated territory of the United States.
Known for its famous islands like Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
Each island has its unique traits. Bord Island on Saipan. The prehistoric ruins in Tinian. And the relaxed atmosphere in Rota.
In general, there should be no reason to be bored when in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands. There is a lot to do.
Do note that if you plan on sharing your experiences online, you may go back home and have to deal with an expensive roaming bill. Roaming can be expensive and should be avoided whenever you can. At least, that is if you like money.
Especially if you have a SIM card from mainland USA because the big three (AT&T, T-Mobile & Verizon) do not operate in Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands – you will be roaming instead.
Luckily, you can get local SIM cards, allowing you to enjoy local rates – much cheaper than international roaming.
You can get a SIM card for 20 USD in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands by visiting the stores of DoCoMo Pacific, IT&E & GTA (Teleguam). 7 GB valid for 7 days will cost you at least 15 USD.
These prices may seem high, but roaming bills can be much higher!
And getting a local SIM card is truly worth it – for real!
In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands. Let's do this.

Table of Contents
Can You Buy a SIM Card in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands?
Anyone is allowed to buy a SIM card in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands, including tourists and visitors.
Be aware that you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands).
Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands?
You can get a SIM card in the official stores of DoCoMo Pacific, IT&E (+iConnect) & GTA (Teleguam) and authorized resellers, including kiosks, grocery stores, and gas stations.
It is also possible to get SIM cards at Guam Antonia B. Won Pat Airport (Guam International Airport) & Saipan International Airport (Fransisco C. Ada Airport).
You can expect to pay the following for Guamanian SIM cards:

Can You Use Your Phone in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands?
Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands use GSM and CDMA technology for mobile telecommunications services. However, CDMA is fading away quickly.
Fortunately, there is a 99% chance you have a phone that supports GSM.
Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands use traditional American frequencies, which are mainly used in the Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2).
Although the Northern Mariana Islands are officially part of Oceania, they are unincorporated territory of the United States, which is one of the various reasons why they use American frequencies over European frequencies, unlike other places in Oceania.
Other parts of the world (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe, and Oceania – ITU Regions 1 & 3) use European frequencies, which are different from the American frequencies.

If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands.
If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania (ITU Regions 1 & 3) and have a low/medium-end device without Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands or can only use slower networks (3G or 2G).
If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands (to some extent) – also on 4G/LTE.
Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands

Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands have three mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:
- DoCoMo Pacific
- IT&E (+iConnect)
- GTA (Teleguam – Guam only)
Note: iConnect (Advanced) got acquired by IT&E.
The following frequencies are used in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands:
- 2G: 850 MHz &1900 MHz
- 3G: 850 MHz & 1900 MHz
- 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 12 & Band 17), 1700 MHz (Band 4) & 1900 MHz (Band 2)
- 5G NR: Unknown
You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.
To check whether your phone will work in Guam & Northern Mariana Islands, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).
Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).
If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.
5G NR in Guam & the Northern Mariana Islands

Commercial 5G NR has been available in Guam since late 2019, with DoCoMo Pacific launching the new service. In 2020, 5G NR was also launched in the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan). However, 5G NR is currently only available to postpaid customers/subscribers.
It is unknown when IT&E (+iConnect) and GTA (Teleguam) will offer 5G NR services, but the Federal Communications Commission (FFC) has been holding 5G license auctions in the US overseas territories since 2020.
Then the question will be whether prepaid customers can also take advantage of 5G NR upon launch or not.
