Lycamobile Denmark Review: A Danish SIM Card With Loads Of Data (+Speedtests)

Denmark is a relatively small country in Europe and is part of Scandinavia, which consists of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Some may include more countries to Scandinavia, while others would exclude some. Either way, it is one of the cold Nordic countries.

Denmark is larger than Belgium, Moldova, and even the Netherlands, and has a population of around 5.2 million residents. You can expect to find peace in many places throughout Denmark.

Denmark has been named the happiest nation for many years. The fact that they are a socialist democracy may contribute to it. Sure, you pay higher taxes there, but you will get a lot in return.

For travelers, there are a lot of things to do, such as visiting the Tivoli Gardens, The Little Mermaid (she is tiny, do not be disappointed!), Legoland, the Viking Ship Museum, and Den Gamle By (The Old Town). You will not be bored when visiting Denmark.

One thing that the Danish love is the internet. Broadband speeds are extremely fast for relatively low prices. Those who use mobile data a lot will rejoice as well because many operators offer a lot of GB for insane prices, especially compared to other nations. It is not uncommon to get a bundle for more than 100 GB for less $30 – crazy!

I have been to, or have written about, countries where you would pay $30 for 1 GB or even less (especially remote island nations that still use satellites for internet, like Saint Helena).

When I went to Denmark, I decided to test out two Danish SIM cards to find out which one is the best. I tested Lebara Denmark and, of course, Lycamobile Denmark.

In this review, I will share my experience with Lycamobile Denmark. Let's see if they are any good, shall we?

Telecom Providers in Denmark

Before I tell you more about Lycamobile Denmark, just Lycamobile, you need to know about the operator situation in Denmark. If you have read my Buying a SIM Card in Denmark Guide, then you already know that Denmark has 4 telecom operators: TDC, Telia Denmark, Telenor Denmark, and 3 Denmark.

All of these operators do not sell prepaid cards anymore. They used to, but most of them stopped in the past few years. TDC was the last operator to cease selling prepaid SIM cards in February 2020.

Luckily, Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) exist, and there are 3 in Denmark: Lycamobile Denmark, Lebara Denmark, and OiSTER. There are a few other Danish MVNOs, but they are for Danish citizens only (they require a Danish Personal Number to activate the SIM card, so stay away from them).

Lycamobile is a well-known brand around the world because they are active in so many countries. They are known for offering affordable rates for international calls. In some countries, you can call over 50 destinations for free as part of a combo packages, which makes Lycamobile popular for expats.

Lycamobile uses the Telia network. Telia and Telenor have a partnership called TT-Netværket, which stands for the TT-network. If I am correct, TT stands for Telenor and Telia, but nobody has confirmed that to me yet. As a result, you can indirectly use the Telenor network because both operators share their networks, giving you even greater coverage.

Let’s see how my experience was with Lycamobile.

How Do I Buy a Lycamobile Prepaid SIM Card?

Lycamobile SIM cards are sold for 29 DKK ($4.35) in various supermarkets, kiosks, 7-Elevens, other stores, and gas stations. If you fly into Copenhagen Airport, you could get a Lycamobile SIM card for free from a Lycamobile stand. I believe they will force you to top up right there and then, so be aware of that.

You can also get a Lycamobile SIM card delivered to a Danish postal address for free. If you do so, I would recommend ordering it a few days before you arrive in Denmark so that you can use your SIM card as soon as you arrive at your ho(s)tel. Ask your ho(s)tel or Airbnb if they can keep your SIM card safe for you in case you wish to order them online. Else, they may be wondering why they received a random Lycamobile SIM card.

Unlike most countries in Europe, you do not have to show your passport when buying a Danish SIM card, so you can buy your SIM card from a 7-Eleven, activate it, and can use it immediately,

I decided to get my Lycamobile SIM card from a local 7-Eleven. At 7-Eleven, they also sell top-up vouchers, but I decided to buy a package online because I was not sure what package I wanted. Then I went to my Airbnb and decided to activate my SIM card.

How Do I Activate my Lycamobile SIM Card?

Activating a Lycamobile SIM card is easy because there is nothing you have to do. You put the SIM card in your phone, and you are ready to go! You will get a welcome text from Lycamobile with your Lycamobile number and your Customer Identification PIN for when you call Lycamobile support.

You will also get an SMS asking you whether you want to receive advertisements through SMS or not. Text YES to 3232 if you want those or STOP to 3232 for not receiving any spam… I mean ads through text.

How and Where Can I Top Up my Lycamobile SIM Card?

You can buy Lycamobile top-up vouchers in supermarkets, from 7-Eleven, or online. The Lycamobile website has a version in English, and the reload page accepts international SIM cards. I decided to buy my package online.

To top-up online, go to the English version of Lycamobile. Enter your phone number at Quick Top-up, select the amount you want to reload, and click on the green Continue button.

Lycamobile Homepage

There, you will see your phone number again and the top-up amount. Here, you can decide to select a bundle (which will be discussed later). Press the green Proceed button after reading and ticking the Terms & Conditions box.

Click on I have a non-DK billing address, and fill in your personal information. Use your Lycamobile number as your contact number. Press the green Proceed button once all fields have been filled in.

All plans auto-renew if purchased online or through your phone. You get the option to disable auto-renewal when buying a bundle on the Lycamobile website. The plans bought through USSD code or SMS will only auto-renew when there is enough credit.

One thing I like about Denmark is that you can get a lot of data for relatively low prices (if compared to other countries charging the same price for certain packages). I mean, imagine staying in Denmark for a week, and you have to go through 250 GB. How would you do that? I have no idea!

How Do I Activate a Lycamobile Data Plan?

With most packages, you can activate a Lycamobile data package by dialing a USSD code or by texting the activation code to 3535. I bought by data pack through the Lycamobile website, which contains the same steps at recharging online, except for a few steps.

Go to the English version of Lycamobile. You can click on Bundles on the top menu, the mid-section menu, or by scrolling down to the bundles themselves. Enter your phone number at Quick Top-up, select the amount you want to reload, and click on the green Continue button.

Choose the bundle you want and press the green Buy now button. In this case, the All in One 99 bundle that comes with 60 GB, 10 hours to Danish numbers and numbers of 50 other countries, and unlimited Lyca to Lyca calls.

Here, you fill in your phone number. Make sure to turn off Auto-renewal if it has been enabled. It was disabled for me by default, but be sure to have a quick look. Tick the Terms & Conditions box, after reading it, of course, and click on the green Proceed button.

Click on I have a non-DK billing address and fill in your personal information. Use your Lycamobile number as your contact number. Can I Roam for Free with Lycamobile in the EU?

All Lycamobile data bundles, including the national bundles, come with an EU allowance. As of 2017, the roam like at home regulation became effective, meaning that operators in the European Union cannot charge roaming rates anymore or are required to give an EU roaming allowance. This applies to Lycamobile as well.

Operators are allowed to use a Fair-use Policy, which means that you cannot use your 200 GB (if buying the 199 DKK plan) in other EU countries. Instead, only a 9.75 GB EU roaming allowance is given for that plan.

I tried using my Lycamobile 49 DKK national plan that comes with 3.5 GB EU data in the Netherlands. It did not work at all, even after updating my APN settings as per Lycamobile’s request through text. I have no idea what was up with that. You may have better luck. Maybe the national plans are indeed for Denmark-only use. If so, they should remove the EU allowance from their website, as it would be false advertising then.

What Speeds Will I Get with Lycamobile in Denmark?

When I was in Denmark, I was mainly staying in a town called Nykøbing Falster (about 1:30 hours by train from Copenhagen if using the high-speed rail). You could say that the town is rural Denmark, but not that rural because it is the largest town in that area. Therefore, I was able to test the speed in rural Denmark and Copenhagen itself.

I did 2 speed tests in Nykøbing Falster: at my Airbnb and my old university. The other 2 tests were done in Copenhagen Central Station and Copenhagen Airport.

As you can see, speeds fluctuate depending on where you are. I was happy with the speeds I got with Lycamobile. I was not expecting blazing-fast speeds in Nykøbing Falster because it is not one of the big cities in Denmark. Even then, the speeds were acceptable. The speed at the Copenhagen station is the only place where I got a download of over 100 Mbps, which was neat. Copenhagen Airport was on the lower end, but there are so many people packed in one place, so I did not expect too much there. The speeds with Lycamobile are quite balanced, you could say.

Do I Recommend Lycamobile to Travelers Visiting Denmark?

I would recommend Lycamobile to those traveling to Denmark. It is easy to get a Lycamobile SIM card throughout Denmark, and you can get it for free at the airport or truly for free by ordering it online. They have a nice selection of data packages that give you a lot of data. In fact, a few ex-peers of mine use their Lycamobile SIM card as a router at home because it is cheaper than getting broadband internet.

It was also nice that I could test Lycamobile outside of a large city, as big cities usually have more antennas and better speeds than towns and villages. The downside of using a speed test then is that the app will connect to a server that is far away from the town, which results in slower download speeds than if the server was hosted in the town.

I also used Lycamobile extensively when I was on the train on my way to the airport. That line is notorious for having bad coverage with some providers (*cough* 3 Denmark *cough*), but the connection was not interrupted that much (but I used the train’s WIFI for the majority of the journey).

If you are staying in Copenhagen (or the Copenhagen Metropolitan area), Odense, Aarhus, or Aalborg, your speeds and coverage will probably be better than me while I was staying in Nykøbing Falster.

Overall, my experience with Lycamobile was pleasant, so they deserve that 5-star rating.

How does Lycamobile Compare with Lebara and OiSTER?

Now that you know everything you need to know about Lycamobile, you may be wondering whether Lycamobile is the best for you or not. I made a Denmark SIM Card comparison article where I go through Lebara, Lycamobile, and OiSTER more in-depth, comparing their packages, speeds, and coverage.

It is a good read where I take certain scenarios into account that may apply to you (such as spending a certain amount on data packages like 50 DKK, 100 DKK, and 200 DKK, wanting to call and abroad, speeds, and EU roaming).
