What do I need to know about roaming with Jio?

Unlike most countries in the world, India still uses a national roaming system within its borders. As a result, you may be charged a roaming fee for any action you take outside your telecom circle with certain operators.

Although this article primarily focuses on international roaming, I do want to note that roaming within India is free with Jio, so you will not get charged extra for calling and texting when in a different state. You will, however, still be charged roaming rates when using data.

International roaming is, however, not free with Jio, but there are three “unlimited roaming” packs available to both prepaid and postpaid customers priced at ₹ 575 for 1 day, ₹ 2875 for 7 days, and ₹ 5751 for 30 days.

You should be aware that unlimited in this sense is not truly unlimited. The following restrictions apply.

The575 Unlimited Pack allows the following daily:

  • Use 100 minutes for outgoing calls to local numbers or to India
  • Send 100 text messages
  • Use 250 MB of high-speed data, which gets throttled to 64 kbps, which is unlimited

The2875 Unlimited Pack (411/day) allows the following within 7 days of purchase:

  • Use 100 minutes for outgoing calls to local numbers or to India
  • Send 100 text messages
  • Use 250 MB of high-speed data, which gets throttled to 64 kbps, which is unlimited

The 5751 Unlimited Pack (192/day) allows the following within 30 days of purchase

  • Use 1500 minutes for outgoing calls to local numbers or to India
  • Send 1500 text messages
  • Use 5 GB of high-speed data, which gets throttled to 64 kbps, which is unlimited

Tip: Looking for cheap flights? Book with AirWander and add stopovers! Not in a hurry yet? Set up flight alerts with Airfarewatchdog and get notified when ticket prices for your preferred route(s) drop!

Incoming calls and receiving SMS when roaming is always free.

The ₹ 1101 Global Pack is a recharge pack that gives you ₹ 1211 worth of international roaming usage, which has a validity of 28 days.

Jio has Roam abroad like home rates starting at ₹ 2-2-2, meaning ₹ 2/min (local calls and calls to India), ₹ 2/MB, and ₹ 2/sms. However, these prices are only available to the 20 destinations where you can use an unlimited pack. Calling to another international destination will set you back with ₹ 100/min.

Do note that the international roaming service will be enabled within 4 hours of purchasing the pack. Make sure your SIM card is connected to the Jio Network in these hours, else the activation process will fail.

Once the activation process begins, your phone will stop receiving any signals. Restart your phone when this happens, and you are good to go!

Can I on planes with Jio?

In-flight roaming is not possible with Jio.

Can I roam on cruise ships with Jio?

Maritime roaming is not available with Jio.

Is roaming with Jio worth it?

If you are visiting one of the 20 destinations where the Jio Unlimited Packs are available or one of the 77 destinations in roaming zones 1 and 2, roaming can be worth it. For any other destination, roaming may not be worth it.

I am not sure if I would recommend any of the Unlimited Packs. ₹ 575 for 100 minutes, 100 SMS, and 250 MB of high-speed data for only one day seems expensive if compared to Jio's most affordable national plan priced at ₹ 98 for 28 days, which gets you 2 GB of data, unlimited local calls, and 300 SMS.

I would not even recommend getting an Unlimited Pack if you wish to roam in a zone 1 destination, where you would pay 2/MB (500 for 250MB),2 for calls to India, local calls, and incoming calls (200 for 100 min), and 2/SMS (200/100 min).

Man making a phone call with earpods in

Let's say you decide to make 2 phone calls lasting both 10 minutes, use 100 MB of data, and send 10 text messages, you would be spending ₹ 240, which is way cheaper than getting the ₹ 575 Unlimited Pack.

If you decide to use up 100 minutes, use 250 MB of data, and send 100 text messages, then getting the ₹ 575 Unlimited Pack would be worth it, as you would be spending ₹ 900 instead of ₹ 575 (56.5% more). The question is if you would use so many minutes, texts, and data while roaming.

If you are in a zone 2 destination where the Unlimited Packs are available such as Czech Republic, Romania, and Spain, then I would recommend getting an Unlimited Pack if we take the same figures from the previous examples, as the Standard PayGo Rates are five times more expensive in zone 2 destinations than zone 1 destinations.

In the 20 destinations where the Jio Unlimited Packs are available, it would be worth purchasing one if you would spend more than 575/day, 2877 within 7 days (411/day), or 5760 within 30 days (192/day).

For all the other destinations, I would recommend getting a local SIM card or an international SIM card like OneSimCard, SimOptions, Surfroam, BNESIM, or SimCorner, as roaming in these destinations will add up quickly.

Djibouti, Libya, and Mauritania are the most expensive roaming destinations for Jio customers. 1 MB of data would set you back with ₹ 1200, calling back to India is charged at ₹ 150 a minute, while making a local call is ₹ 50/min, and calling abroad is ₹ 200/min.

In short, roaming with Jio is only worth it if done in moderation in zone 1 destinations if using PayGo rates. If one is roaming in Czech Republic, Romania, or Spain, getting an Unlimited Pack is something to consider. Roaming in all other destinations is too expensive, and you will be better off using a local SIM card or using internet-based applications like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Skype when on a WIFI network.
