What do I need to know about roaming with Jio?

Unlike most countries in the world, India still uses a national roaming system within its borders. As a result, you may be charged a roaming fee for any action you take outside your telecom circle with certain operators.

Although this article primarily focuses on international roaming, I do want to note that roaming within India is free with Jio, so you will not get charged extra for calling and texting when in a different state. You will, however, still be charged roaming rates when using data.

International roaming is, however, not free with Jio, but there are three “unlimited roaming” packs available to both prepaid and postpaid customers priced at ₹ 575 for 1 day, ₹ 2875 for 7 days, and ₹ 5751 for 30 days.

You should be aware that unlimited in this sense is not truly unlimited. The following restrictions apply.

The 575 Unlimited Pack allows the following daily:

  • Use 100 minutes for outgoing calls to local numbers or to India
  • Send 100 text messages
  • Use 250 MB of high-speed data, which gets throttled to 64 kbps, which is unlimited

The 2875 Unlimited Pack (411/day) allows the following within 7 days of purchase:

  • Use 100 minutes for outgoing calls to local numbers or to India
  • Send 100 text messages
  • Use 250 MB of high-speed data, which gets throttled to 64 kbps, which is unlimited

The 5751 Unlimited Pack (192/day) allows the following within 30 days of purchase

  • Use 1500 minutes for outgoing calls to local numbers or to India
  • Send 1500 text messages
  • Use 5 GB of high-speed data, which gets throttled to 64 kbps, which is unlimited

Tip: Looking for cheap flights? Book with AirWander and add stopovers! Not in a hurry yet? Set up flight alerts with Airfarewatchdog and get notified when ticket prices for your preferred route(s) drop!

Incoming calls and receiving SMS when roaming is always free.

The ₹ 1101 Global Pack is a recharge pack that gives you ₹ 1211 worth of international roaming usage, which has a validity of 28 days.

Jio has Roam abroad like home rates starting at ₹ 2-2-2, meaning ₹ 2/min (local calls and calls to India), ₹ 2/MB, and ₹ 2/sms. However, these prices are only available to the 20 destinations where you can use an unlimited pack. Calling to another international destination will set you back with ₹ 100/min.

How do I enable Jio international roaming

Both Jio prepaid and postpaid customers can enable international roaming through the MyJio app or on Jio.com. Prepaid customers can also go to the nearest Jio Store or retailer to get international roaming activated.

Enable Jio International roaming with the MyJio App

Jio Postpaid subscribers have to follow the following steps to enable international roaming through the MyJio app:

  1. Open the MyJio home screen
  2. Scroll down and tap on ISD/Roaming
  3. Select Activate
  4. You will see the following message if done properly: Your request for IR (International Roaming) has been submitted successfully along with a Reference Number
  5. Once the international roaming service has been enabled, you will receive a push notification
  6. You get the option to either increase your credit limit or to purchase a roaming pack – choose the option that is most suitable for you

Jio Prepaid customers have to follow the following steps to enable international roaming through the MyJio app:

  1. Open the MyJio home screen
  2. Tap on Recharge
  3. Select International Roaming
  4. Choose the pack you wish to purchase
  5. Tap on Buy and select your preferred payment method to make the payment

Enable Jio International roaming through Jio.com

Jio Postpaid subscribers have to follow the following steps to enable international roaming on jio.com:

  1. Go to the Jio login page and log-in (you need your phone to receive the one-time password (OTP))
  2. Click on the Settings icon (the icon in blue on the right-hand corner)
  3. Select Manage Service
  4. Enable international roaming by sliding the button to the right and click on Submit
  5. You get a notification once international roaming has been enabled successfully
  6. Click on Credit Limit
  7. Select Enhance credit limit and follow the steps shown on the page

Jio prepaid customers have to follow the following steps to enable international roaming on jio.com:

  1. Go to jio.com or directly to the Quick Pay page
  2. Enter your Jio number
  3. Click on International Roaming
  4. Select your preferred international roaming pack and click on Buy
  5. Select your preferred payment method to make the payment

Enable Jio International roaming through a Jio Store or Jio Retailer

Simply visit the nearest Jio Store or Jio Retailer to recharge your phone with an international roaming pack. Do note that the international roaming service will be enabled within 4 hours of purchasing the pack. Make sure your SIM card is connected to the Jio Network in these hours, else the activation process will fail.

Once the activation process begins, your phone will stop receiving any signals. Restart your phone when this happens, and you are good to go!

Can I enable Jio International Roaming when I am not in India?

The general rule is that one needs to be in India when enabling the international roaming service to receive the international roaming signals. However, in the following 77 destinations, you can purchase an international roaming pack without the activation process failing on you.

Have you considered getting a local SIM card or an international SIM card like OneSimCard, SimOptions, Surfroam, BNESIM, or SimCorner already?

What are the Jio Standard PayGo Roaming Rates?

Jio roaming rates differ per destination and per action:

  • Data roaming: Between ₹ 0.02/10KB and ₹ 12/10KB (or ₹ 2/MB and ₹ 1200/MB)
  • Calling to India: Between ₹ 2/min and ₹ 150/min
  • Outgoing local call: Between ₹ 2/min and ₹ 50/min
  • Outgoing international call: Between ₹ 100/min and ₹ 200/min
  • Incoming call: Between ₹ 2/min and ₹ 75/min
  • Sending SMS: Between ₹ 2/SMS and ₹ 25/SMS
  • Receiving SMS: Always free

Although Jio officially does not use roaming zones, I managed to group the roaming rates into 7 zones based on the pricing per action.

Notes:
1. All prices are in INR per minute or text
2. L. Out. Call stands for Local Outgoing Call
3. Out. Call ROW stands for Outgoing Call to Rest of the World
4. Inc. Call stands for Incoming Call
5. Data roaming prices are per 10 KB. An MB has 1024 KB. Multiply the price listen under Data with 102.4 to get the price in MB.
6. Incoming SMS are free of charge

Is roaming with Jio worth it?

If you are visiting one of the 20 destinations where the Jio Unlimited Packs are available or one of the 77 destinations in roaming zones 1 and 2, roaming can be worth it. For any other destination, roaming may not be worth it.

I am not sure if I would recommend any of the Unlimited Packs. ₹ 575 for 100 minutes, 100 SMS, and 250 MB of high-speed data for only one day seems expensive if compared to Jio’s most affordable national plan priced at ₹ 98 for 28 days, which gets you 2 GB of data, unlimited local calls, and 300 SMS.

I would not even recommend getting an Unlimited Pack if you wish to roam in a zone 1 destination, where you would pay 2/MB (500 for 250MB), 2 for calls to India, local calls, and incoming calls (200 for 100 min), and 2/SMS (200/100 min).

Man making a phone call with earpods in

Let’s say you decide to make 2 phone calls lasting both 10 minutes, use 100 MB of data, and send 10 text messages, you would be spending ₹ 240, which is way cheaper than getting the ₹ 575 Unlimited Pack.

If you decide to use up 100 minutes, use 250 MB of data, and send 100 text messages, then getting the ₹ 575 Unlimited Pack would be worth it, as you would be spending ₹ 900 instead of ₹ 575 (56.5% more). The question is if you would use so many minutes, texts, and data while roaming.

If you are in a zone 2 destination where the Unlimited Packs are available such as Czech Republic, Romania, and Spain, then I would recommend getting an Unlimited Pack if we take the same figures from the previous examples, as the Standard PayGo Rates are five times more expensive in zone 2 destinations than zone 1 destinations.

In the 20 destinations where the Jio Unlimited Packs are available, it would be worth purchasing one if you would spend more than 575/day, 2877 within 7 days (411/day), or 5760 within 30 days (192/day).

For all the other destinations, I would recommend getting a local SIM card or an international SIM card like OneSimCard, SimOptions, Surfroam, BNESIM, or SimCorner, as roaming in these destinations will add up quickly.

Djibouti, Libya, and Mauritania are the most expensive roaming destinations for Jio customers. 1 MB of data would set you back with ₹ 1200, calling back to India is charged at ₹ 150 a minute, while making a local call is ₹ 50/min, and calling abroad is ₹ 200/min.

In short, roaming with Jio is only worth it if done in moderation in zone 1 destinations if using PayGo rates. If one is roaming in Czech Republic, Romania, or Spain, getting an Unlimited Pack is something to consider. Roaming in all other destinations is too expensive, and you will be better off using a local SIM card or using internet-based applications like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Skype when on a WIFI network.

Book Your Flight

It is time to book your flight. Find cheap flights with AirWander so that you can add free or cheap stopovers in destinations you have not considered yet. If you are not ready to take off yet, set up flight alerts with Airfarewatchdog, and they will notify you once ticket prices for your preferred destination drops.

Book Your Accommodation

I am a huge fan of Airbnb because it allows me to live with a local or get a local place for myself. Staying in someone’s house or apartment feels much different than being in a ho(s)tel. At least, that is how I see it. Moreover, Airbnb can often be much cheaper than staying in a hotel.

Get Your Travel Insurance

You will regret not having travel insurance once you actually need it and “forgot” to get it. Nowadays, travel insurance is cheap and comprehensive unlike back in the days. World Nomads is by far the best travel insurance for adventurous travelers like yourself. You can even get insured WHILE already traveling, which is not something many insurance companies allow you to do.

Get a Travel Debit Card

Travel Cheques are outdated. Paying with your credit card or debit card can be expensive because of all the exchange commissions banks charge you. TransferWise allows you to convert your main currency to the currency of your destination for a small fee (up to 8 times less than with your bank!) Getting a Transferwise Borderless account is FREE, so you will get an instant return on your investment.

Enjoy your trip!
