Is roaming with U Mobile worth it?

U Mobile Unlimited Hero P139 customers get 3 GB/month of roaming data in 36 destinations including Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand free of charge. Although this package is useful to have, one needs to spend 139 RM per month on their plan, which is rather expensive.

9 other U Mobile Postpaid plans can get Roam-Onz, which gives these customers up to 8 GB/month of roaming data in 12 including Australia, Cambodia, and Hong Kong at no additional cost too. To get the minimum amount of free data, one needs to get the P68 plan, which gets you 500 MB/month. Not a bad deal, but you do not get that much data.

Data roaming in non-Roam-Onz destinations is expensive for both U Mobile Postpaid and Prepaid customers, starting RM35/MB, which adds up quickly if watching YouTube videos or downloading large files like 48-megapixel images. I would recommend getting a local SIM card or an international SIM card like OneSimCard, SimOptions, Surfroam, BNESIM, or SimCorner if going to these places.

In some destinations like Georgia, you will be charged RM100/MB, which is almost criminal. You would be better off using an internet-based app like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Skype when connected to a WIFI network.

In terms of calling while abroad, those rates start from RM1.50/min when making local calls or calling to Malaysia. You also have to pay to receive phone calls.

Sending text message rates start from RM0.50/SMS, and you do not have to pay for receiving SMS, which is almost universal.

In short, data roaming with U Mobile is worth it if you get the option to use U Mobile Roam-Onz (Global). Data roaming per used MB (Pay-As-You-Go) is expensive and should be avoided. Making and picking up calls can be cheap or expensive, depending on the destination you are in and the length of the call. Sending text messages should be avoided too unless it is necessary.
