Roaming with Jazz: Everything You Need to Know

It is always a hassle to find out whether you should bring your Jazz SIM card with you or to purchase a local SIM card at your destination. Today, we will go over everything you need to know about roaming with Jazz: Prepaid and Postpaid.

Can I roam with Jazz?

Roaming is possible with Jazz Prepaid and Jazz Postpaid plans. Prepaid users can use Jazz Prepaid Roaming while Postpaid users can Postpaid International Roaming (IR). Prepaid users can, however, not dataroam with Prepaid Roaming.

No idea how roaming works? I made this comprehensive guide about what roaming is and how it works. It is worth the read – promised!

What do I need to know about Jazz Prepaid Roaming?

Jazz Prepaid allows you to roam in 36 destinations at affordable prices. Roaming, in this case, refers to phone calls and text messages. Data roaming is not possible with prepaid packages.

Activating roaming on your Jazz phone is quick. Simply dial 111 and roaming will be activated within seconds.

Jazz Load, Jazz Share, Balance Inquiry (*111#), and Balance Charging through USSD (*123*14DigitCode#) all work while roaming.

What do I need to know about Jazz Postpaid Roaming?

Jazz postpaid customers can roam in over 130 destinations. They can also data roam in over 70 destinations starting at 30 rupees/MB. The roaming destinations (no-data) are grouped in 6 pricing zones (compared to the 300 tariff structures used earlier) and have 11 distinct prices (compared to the more than 20 000 prices used previously).

How do I activate data roaming on my Jazz Postpaid plan?

To access data roaming, you have to register as a Jazz International Roaming subscriber at a Jazz customer service center and pay a security fee of 20 000 Pak rupees. If you already have a security deposit of 5000 rupees on your account, then you will only need to deposit an additional 15 000 rupees. Once that is done, Postpaid International Roaming will be enabled.

Don’t want to pay the roaming deposit? Consider getting a local SIM card at your destination or an international SIM card like OneSimCard, SimOptions, Surfroam, BNESIM, or SimCorner.

What are the roaming charges for Jazz Postpaid Roaming?

The Jazz Postpaid Roaming rates depend on what zone your visited destination is in. Jazz uses six zones for Postpaid International Roaming, which you can find below.

Notes:
1. All rates are charged in Pak Rupees when billed. However, The US Dollar to Pak rupee exchange rate is applied to the 23rd day of every calendar month.
2. Calls are billed per minute. However, charges for incoming calls are on the foreign operators’ discretion, which may not be on a per-minute basis.
3. Destinations where operators charge a terminating fee, shall have higher incoming call charges by the same amount.
4. All calls made outside the visited destination, except for calls back to Pakistan, are treated as international calls.
5. For AT&T (US), standard outgoing calls will be charged at the start of the ring time, or incomplete calls with minimum duration equal or greater than 30-second increments
6. Government taxes apply.
7. Destinations may shift zones without prior notice. Although I will update the tables as soon as I am aware of a change, you are recommended to contact Jazz to see if anything has changed.

Can I roam on planes with Jazz?

Jazz is the first operator in Pakistan to offer inflight roaming capabilities to its Postpaid customers (not available to Prepaid customers). Mobile Inflight Roaming is available with Air France & Emirates through OnAir & AeroMobile where you can make voice calls, send text messages, and use mobile data while in the air.

Right now, inflight roaming is available on one Emirates and One Air France aircraft. The service will slowly be added to other airplanes in their fleets and other airlines.

It is unfortunately not possible to tell you on which routes inflight roaming is available. However, these planes fly to various European destinations such as:

  • Barcelona
  • Casablanca
  • Frankfurt
  • Hamburg
  • London
  • Munich
  • Paris
  • Prague
  • Rome
  • Venice
  • Vienna
  • Warsaw

You just have to be lucky you are on those lucky planes. Once I manage to obtain the planes’ registrations, I will share them with you on this post.

Cabin of a plane

How much does Jazz Mobile Inflight Roaming cost?

  • Incoming Inflight Roaming calls start from $4.34/m
  • Calls to Pakistan costs at least $2.76/m
  • Sending a text message will cost you at least $0.77
  • Incoming text messages are free
  • Data roaming charges start at $0.001/KB

Notes:
1. All rates are charged in Pak Rupees when billed. However, the US Dollar to Pak rupee exchange rate is applied on the 23rd day of the preceding month.
2. Calls are billed per minute.
3. GPRS sessions are billed by the respective Initial and Subsequent charging intervals.
4. Calls to Satellite, Premium rate, and Emergency numbers may be charged at higher rates by foreign operators
5. Calls made to certain international destinations may be charged at a higher rate than the one shown in the rates table.
6. Government taxes apply.
7. The tables are best viewed in landscape mode or desktop view (when on mobile)

Is Jazz Inflight Roaming worth it?

Roaming on a plane is expensive. Both incoming and outgoing calls start from at least $2.76/min. Outgoing text messages are cheap compared to calls starting at $0.77.

Even then, unless the situation is urgent that you need to reach out to someone immediately, you may be better off waiting until you have arrived at your destination to call your friends and family.

Regarding onboard data roaming, onboard WIFI packages are almost always cheaper than what you get charged for per MB when data roaming on a plane. I would recommend exploring the WIFI capabilities before enabling inflight data roaming. It could prevent bill shock.

If the plane or airline you are flying with does not offer inflight WIFI, you could always enjoy the inflight entertainment system. If that is not available… then I hope you have brought something to entertain yourself with onboard. Else you can just sleep – always a good option when bored!

Can I roam on cruise ships with Jazz?

Jazz is the first mobile operator to offer Maritime Roaming to its Postpaid subscribers (it is not available to Prepaid customers). Maritime roaming is available on select vessels on designated routes. Jazz works together with MCP (Maritime Communications Partner) and OceanCell to offer this service to its customers.

On what vessels and routes can I use Jazz Maritime Roaming?

Is Jazz Maritime Roaming worth it?

Roaming on a ship can become expensive very quickly. If you decide to pick up an incoming call, it could cost you anywhere between $0.19/min to $6.32/min depending on the operator. Phone calls like these cause bill shock.

It is recommended not to roam while on a vessel and to make use of the onboard WiFi network if the ship offers this option so that you can text and call through internet-based apps, like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Skype. Else you may be better being offline for the remainder of your crossing.

Is roaming with Jazz worth it?

Jazz offers incredible roaming options to its customers. Postpaid users can take advantage of more perks and discounts compared to Prepaid customers. However, the 15 000 rupee deposit is unfortunate, as we would rather spend that money on actual travel instead of keeping it locked at Jazz. You could spend that money on a local SIM card or international SIM card like OneSimCard, SimOptions, Surfroam, BNESIM, or SimCorner and still have money left – something to keep in mind.

I cannot stress it enough that if you are in a destination that offers 30 rupees/MB (Postpaid), make sure to select the correct operator, else you may be charged $10/MB – that would be a shame.

Besides that, I am happy to see that Jazz is offering almost everything you can ask for in terms of roaming. More Pakistani providers could follow Jazz’ footsteps.
