SIM Cards in Nigeria: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Nigeria – named after the Niger River that runs through the country. It is also the 7th most populous country in the world.

The country has the largest economy in Africa and is expected to be in the top ten economies by 2050. Mostly because of its abundance of natural resources (mainly oil and gas).

Together with Ghana, Nigeria has an Afrobeats scene, with top Afrobeats artists like Burna Boy, Davido, Naira Marley, Tiwa Savage & Wizkid representing the country.

There is no reason to be bored when in Nigeria. From overcrowded cities like Lagos to being fully immersed in nature in the Omo Forestry Reserve.

You can always cool down at Tarkwa Bay Beach if you think it is too hot during the day. Or you can wait until it is dark and enjoy the active nightlife in Port Harcourt, for example.

While in Nigeria, you will most likely share your travel experiences online. Before you do so, be aware that international roaming can be expensive. If you do not watch out, you will come back home and experience bill shock when looking at your roaming bill.

Luckily, there is a way to avoid expensive roaming bills – using local SIM cards like a Nigerian one. That way, you can enjoy local rates, which are almost always cheaper than international roaming.

So, how expensive are SIM cards in Nigeria?

You can get a Nigerian SIM card for as low as 100 NGN (0.15 USD) to 400 NGN (0.50 USD) in MTN's, Airtel's, Glo Mobile's & 9mobile's official stores. 1 GB valid for 7 days will set you back 500 NGN (0.65 USD).

Those are some incredibly low prices! There are almost no operators worldwide that would charge you 1.20 USD/GB for roaming in Nigeria. So yeah, these are good deals.

Moreover, Nigeria is one of the African countries with the lowest mobile data rates.

Before you get all excited and buy yourself a SIM card, there are quite some things you should know before purchasing a Nigerian SIM card.

In this guide, I will go over everything you need to know about buying a SIM card in Nigeria. Let's do this.

Can You Buy a SIM Card in Nigeria?

Everyone 16 years or older living or visiting Nigeria can buy a Nigerian SIM card without restrictions.

You do need to be aware that you have to go through a SIM card registration procedure.

Additionally, you need a phone that supports the frequencies used in the country (preferably all of them to have the most optimal experience while in Nigeria).

Finally, you need to have a SIM-lock-free (unlocked) phone to use local SIM cards.

Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Nigeria?

You can get a Nigerian SIM card in the operators' official stores (MTN, Glo, Airtel & 9mobile). In addition, SIM cards can be obtained at several international airports, including Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

You can buy a SIM card at the following International Airports:

  • Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos Airport)
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja Airport)
  • Port Harcourt International Airport
  • Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (Kano Airport)

You can expect to pay the following for a Nigerian SIM card:

  • MTN Nigeria: 400 NGN
  • Airtel Nigeria: 150 NGN
  • Glo Mobile Nigeria: 100 NGN
  • 9mobile: From 100 NGN

The following operators also have SIM cards targeting tourists:

  • MTN Nigeria: 5000 NGN & 10 000 NGN

Can You Use Your Phone in Nigeria?

Nigeria uses GSM technology for mobile communications. CDMA is used sparsely in the country.

Traditional European frequencies are used in Nigeria, which are mostly used in ITU Regions 1 & 3 (Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Europe & Oceania).

The Americas (North-, Central– & South America + the Caribbean – ITU Region 2) use American Frequencies, which differ from the European ones.

ITU Regions Map by Phone Travel Wiz

If you bought your phone in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Oceania(ITU Regions 1 & 3), you should not experience any issues with using your phone in Nigeria.

If you purchased your phone in the Americas (ITU Region 2) and have a low/medium-end device (without Tri-Band or Quad-Band) support, then there is a possibility you cannot use your phone when in Nigeria or can only on 2G.

If you have a medium/high-end device with Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, you can use your phone in Nigeria – even on 4G/LTE.

Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Nigeria

Cellular Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

Nigeria has four mobile operators offering prepaid services easily accessible to travelers:

  • MTN Nigeria
  • Airtel Nigeria
  • Glo Mobile Nigeria
  • 9mobile

The following frequencies are used in Nigeria:

  • 2G: 900 MHz & 1800 MHz
  • 3G: 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 700 MHz (Band 28), 800 MHz (Band 20), 1800 MHz (Band 3), 2600 MHz (Band 7)

You can learn more about frequencies in the video below.

To check whether your phone will work in Nigeria, check out this page by Kimovil or this one by Will My Phone Work (outdated, unfortunately, but extremely user-friendly – useful for phones launched in or before 2019. It does not check for 5G NR compatibility).

Again, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator (meaning you have to roam internationally or buy another unlocked phone that does support the frequencies listed above).

If you want to learn how international roaming works, this guide explains it in-depth. If you wonder why it is often so expensive to roam, this article explains the hidden reason they do not want you to know.

A Note About 4G/LTE-Only Operators in Nigeria

Nigeria has four 4G/LTE-only operators:

  • NTel
  • Spectranet
  • Smile Nigeria
  • Swift

The coverage of these four operators is minimal, making them bad options for travelers. Mostly because these operators are useful for stationary use (mobile broadband at home).

NTel is the only operator that has national roaming agreements with one of the big four operators.

However, it is a 2G and 3G roaming agreement with 9mobile (which has the worst coverage in the country).

Overall, these operators should be avoided. If you are looking for relatively affordable mobile data plans, are confident you will be staying in a location where these operators have (great) coverage, or live in Nigeria and are looking for mobile broadband, follow the links to learn more about these operators:

5G NR in Nigeria

5G NR Connectivity Illustration by Phone Travel Wiz

5G NR is not available in Nigeria as of 2021. However, the regulator (Nigerian Communications Commission – NNC) approved 5G NR trials back in 2019, and several trials have been held since.

In the same year, MTN Nigeria showed off 5G in several Nigerian cities (Abuja, Calabar & Lagos) on 26 GHz.

In 2020, the NCC announced a 5G NR deployment policy and reserving 3500 MHz & 26 GHz frequencies for 5G NR services, in line with the frequencies used in ITU Regions 1 & 3. MTN Nigeria was also selected to conduct 5G NR trials for six months in co-operation with the NCC.

In November that year, the NCC published the consultation document for the 5G NR deployment policy. Based on the document, 5G NR frequency auctions will be held in the second half of 2021. The commercial launch of 5G NR should be in the last quarter of 2022.

Although Nigeria will not be the first African country with 5G NR, access it will be one of the first few.

At the time of writing, Mauritania still does not have commercial 4G/LTE. It finally does since April 2021!

Best SIM Card in Nigeria

If you want to buy the best SIM card in Nigeria, I recommend going with either MTN or Airtel. MTN has the best network, but it is also the most expensive option. Airtel has the fastest speeds in Nigeria. Glo used to be the second-best, but its speeds have suffered over the years.

Best eSIM in Nigeria

Unfortunately, none of the mobile operators offer eSIM (to prepaid customers) in Nigeria yet.

However, you can get travel eSIMs from Airalo and Holafly.

However, you can also get a travel eSIM from various eSIM providers.

The list below is not exhaustive – many more providers have eSIMs for Nigeria.

But these are the ones I have tried and had pleasant experiences with.

Moreover, they are reasonably priced, which I find very important (you will not see me recommending an eSIM I would not buy myself).

So here are the four best eSIMs for Nigeria:

Because this is the SIM card buying guide for Nigeria, I will not spend too much time about travel eSIMs here and throughout this guide (but I will still do here and there).

If you want to learn more about the best eSIMs for Nigeria, you better check out my Nigeria eSIM buying guide.

It is as helpful and comprehensive as this guide but about eSIMs instead 😜.

SIM Card Registration in Nigeria

SIM card registration, with the use of your passport information, is mandatory in Nigeria. This will often be done at the point of sale.

Nigeria has a history of restarting the SIM card registration process. The latest SIM card registration campaign started in April 2021 after the federal government banned new SIM card purchases and registration in December 2020.

This meant that anyone with a Nigerian SIM card who wanted to keep their phone number had to re-register themselves with their mobile operators again. This also applied when they already (re-)registered themselves in the past.

As part of the latest SIM card registration campaign, all SIM cards have to be registered with the mandatory National Identity Number (NIN), which is basically Nigeria's national ID.

As a traveler, you will be exempt from the NIN requirement. Instead, you can go through the SIM card registration process with your passport with the use Visa permit.

Nigeria is one of the few countries where biometric data is captured as part of the SIM card registration process.

Fingerprints (up to four) and a live photograph will be taken for registering your SIM card. If you have an NIN, in addition to fingerprints and photos being taken, your NIN and biometrics will be verified.

Do note that not all MTN Nigeria, Glo Mobile Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, or 9mobile stores can register SIM cards. Only select stores in most, but not all, states can do so.

Below are links to lists of stores that can register SIM cards:

Nigeria Speeds, Internet Prices & Insights

Flag of Nigeria

Sub-Saharan Africa is an interesting region in terms of mobile data pricing. In some countries, the cost of mobile data is nothing (even for national standards). In other countries, it is straight-up daylight robbery (like Equatorial Guinea).

Fortunately, the cost of mobile data is affordable in Nigeria. Even when looking at it from a global perspective.

But how cheap is mobile data in Nigeria?

The average price for 1 GB of data in Nigeria is 0.88 USD, far below the African average of 5.80 USD. The world average is 4.07 USD.

When looking at just Sub-Saharan Africa, using Cable.co.uk's definition, the average cost of 1 GB of data is 6.44 USD – that is on the higher end.

Then again, countries and territories like Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, Saint Helena & São Tomé and Príncipe pull the average by a lot (with the average cost of 1 GB of data being more than 20 USD up to 50 USD).

Enough about costs, what about mobile internet speeds in Nigeria? Are the speeds fast?

Nigeria's average mobile download speed is around 23 Mbps, about half the global average.

Do not get discouraged yet. There is no African country that has an average download speed higher than the global average. South Africa is close and has the fastest mobile download speed in Africa.

The telecom market is highly competitive in Nigeria. Most Nigerians have at least two SIM cards to enjoy lower on-net rates or take advantage of operator-specific promotions.

Competition became so bad (read: fierce) that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had to set a price floor between 2013 and 2016 on mobile data because there was an all-price war. This was to prevent the big players from squeezing out the smaller players.

After 2016, this policy was scrapped because of public outcry – and the smaller operators were exempt from this policy. Since the reversal of the policy, the cost of mobile data has gone down significantly. Now, Nigeria is one of the 53 countries worldwide, with an average cost of 1 GB of less than 1 USD.

Currency in Nigeria

10 Nigerian Naira Bank Note

Nigeria uses the Nigerian Naira with the symbol NGN (which will be used throughout this article). However, prices in Nigeria are listed in or N. For example, 25 NGN = ₦/N 25. For reference, below are some exchange rates between NGN and USD (US Dollars – Rounded):

  • 10 NGN = 0.15 USD
  • 100 NGN = 0.15 USD
  • 1000 NGN = 1.25 USD
  • 10 000 NGN = 12.35 USD
  • 100 000 NGN = 123.50 USD
  • 1 000 000 NGN = 1234.80 USD

For up-to-date NGN:USD exchange rates, search NGN to USD on Google, or replace USD with the currency you use.

If your credit/debit card charges you foreign exchange fees, get yourself a Wise Borderless Account and Debit Card.

Their fees are MUCH lower than banks and credit card companies charge you (and Wise is transparent about their fees, unlike banks).
