Roaming with Vodafone New Zealand: Everything You Need to Know

Kiwis are avid travelers. When abroad, we like to share our holiday photos on social media to make people jealous… I mean to show them how of a good time we are having. However, should we be roaming with our home provider or get a local SIM card when traveling? Today, we will be analyzing everything you need to know about roaming with Vodafone New Zealand.

Can I roam with Vodafone New Zealand?

Both Vodafone Prepay and Pay Monthly subscribers can roam internationally. Vodafone Prepay customers can roam in 86 destinations, while Pay Monthly users can roam in over 100 destinations. Roaming with Vodafone allows you to call, text, and use data while abroad.

What do I need to know about roaming with Vodafone Prepay?

Vodafone Prepay customers can either purchase one of two of the roaming add-ons (NZ$5/daily or NZ$19/weekly – New Zealand Dollar) or roam on the go and get charges per usage (min, text, or MB).

Prepaid roaming add-ons can be purchased if you have one of the following prepaid plans:

• My Flex Prepay
• Mates Prepay
• Prepay Pay & Go
• Prepay Carryover $19 or $29
• International Plan
• Vodafone X

The $5/day roaming add-on gives you:

• 200 MB of international roaming data
• 20 minutes of incoming and outgoing calls to standard New Zealand & local numbers
• 20 texts to standard New Zealand & local numbers

To enable the $5 roaming add-on, you have to text BUY RA5 to 756 to enable the add-on.

The $19/week roaming add-on gives you:

• 1 GB of international roaming data
• 100 minutes of incoming and outgoing calls to standard New Zealand & local numbers
• 100 texts to standard New Zealand & local numbers

To enable the $19 roaming add-on, you have to text BUY RA19 to 756 to enable the add-on.

There are a few essential things you should know about these roaming packages:

• Your bundle will be activated immediately after purchasing it, so it is recommended to buy it after you have landed.
• The roaming add-ons are valid until midnight New Zealand time (UTC +12 & UTC +13 when daylight saving is active)
• When you run out of minutes or texts, you will have to wait until your bundle renews. You cannot top-up your minutes or text until renewal. You can, however, recharge your data with either 50 MB ($3/day – text BUY 50RDB to 756) or 1 GB ($15/week – text BUY 1RDB to 756)

Vodafone Prepay roaming destinations (roaming add-on)

The Vodafone Prepay roaming add-ons have pre-set rates, so you do not have to worry about roaming zones with different rates. Below are the 86 destinations.

What are the Vodafone Prepay Roaming casual rates?

Vodafone Prepay Roaming casual rates start at $0.79/outgoing call per minute, $1.00/incoming call per minute, $0.80/text, and $0.50/MB.

Vodafone Pay Monthly subscribers can take advantage of the $7/day roaming deal, which allows you to use your plan's minutes, texts, and data in 103 destinations including Australia, Fiji, Samoa, the UK, the US, and China.

Do note that Daily Roaming is valid until midnight New Zealand time (UTC +12 & UTC +13 when daylight saving is active).

22 destinations in Europe, South America, Africa, the Middle-East, and Asia are not covered in the Daily Roaming option, meaning you cannot use your plan's minutes, text, and data while in these destinations. The cost of using your mobile while roaming differs per destination. You can find the rates specific to your plan by Signing into My Vodafone.

100 destinations across the globe do not fall in the $7 Daily Roaming category or are not in the Rest of Europe and other popular destinations, meaning you cannot use your plan's minutes, text, and data while in these destinations. What happens when I run out of data while roaming on Vodafone Daily Roaming?

If you have used all of your plan's data in one of the 103 Daily Roaming destinations, you will be directed to Vodafone's Flexi Data where you can buy more data, whereas if you are traveling in one of the 122 non-Daily Roaming destinations, you will be directed to Vodafone's Data Angle Overseas where you can buy more data.

Flexi Data MB/GB prices start at $12 for 500 MB. Data Angel Overseas uses a zoning system (3 zones) with different pricing strategies. Data for:

• zone 1 starts at $15 for 100 MB
• zone 2 starts at $15 for 40 MB
• zone 3 starts at $30 for 5 MB

Vodafone Flexi Data

Flexi Data is automatically included in the following plans:

• Vodafone Red
• Vodafone Red Business
• Smart
• Business Smart
• Smart Data
• Business Smart Data
• Broadband Mini
• Broadband Regular
• Broadband Supreme plans (purchased after 24 August 2011)

Once you run low on data in a Daily Roaming destination, Vodafone will send you a text message giving you options on how to purchase more.

Below are the Flexi Data rates:

• 500 MB for $12
• 1 GB for $20
• 2 GB for $35

The purchased one-off add-ons will expire at the end of your billing cycle.

Vodafone Data Angle Overseas

Once you run low on data in a non-Daily Roaming destination, Vodafone will send you a text message giving you options on how to purchase more.

Below are the data bundles grouped into three zones:

Zone 1:

• $15 for 100 MB (A100)
• $30 for 250 MB (A250)
• $50 for 500 MB (A500)

To purchase a data bundle, text the size of your bundle (shown in brackets above) to 747 (sending this text is free of charge). For example, I text A250 to 747 to purchase the $30/250MB bundle for zone 1 destinations.

Zone 2:

• $15 for 40 MB (B40)
• $30 for 100 MB (B100)
• $50 for 200 MB (B200)

To purchase a data bundle, text the size of your bundle (shown in brackets above) to 747 (sending this text is free of charge). For example, I text B100 to 747 to purchase the $30/100MB bundle for zone 2 destinations.

Zone 3:

• $30 for 5 MB (C5)
• $50 for 10 MB (C10)
• $100 for 25 MB (C25)

Can I roam on planes with Vodafone New Zealand?

Vodafone Pay Monthly and Prepay subscribers can enjoy in-flight roaming with 13 airlines. However, since the 1st of July 2017, Vodafone discontinued its data roaming service on flights claiming that is was too expensive for Vodafone and its customers.

In-flight roaming is available on a limited number of airlines. In-flight roaming can be found on selected flights with the following 13 airlines:

You will have to contact the airline you are flying with to learn whether in-flight roaming will be available on your flight or not. Unfortunately, I do not have a list of plane registrations or destinations of where in-flight roaming is likely to be enabled.

You have to reach out to Vodafone support to enable inflight roaming before boarding the plane.

How much does Vodafone charge for in-flight roaming?

The airlines that offer in-flight roaming use two different roaming providers (On-Air & AeroMobile). All airlines listed except for Emirates use the On-Air pricing shown below. Emirates uses the AeroMobile Pricing.

Can I roam on cruise ships with Vodafone New Zealand?

Vodafone Pay Monthly and Prepay subscribers can roam on ships, ferries, and cruises. However, since the 1st of July 2017, Vodafone discontinued its maritime data roaming service claiming that it was too expensive for Vodafone and its customers ($25/MB).

Although maritime roaming is available on selected cruises, Vodafone Prepay customers can only roam on cruises that the Telenor Maritime or OnWaves-Siminn Icelands networks.

Maritime Roaming charging applies when cruising around any destination (including New Zealand), once the cruise ship or boat has left port and is more than 12 nautical miles from the shore or at least 2 nautical miles in European Union countries. A typical cruise around New Zealand, for example, travels at 35 nautical miles out from shore.
