Italy SIM Card Reviews by Phone Travel Wiz

Italy is a special country in terms of mobile data rates.

Because of Iliad, currently Italy's smallest mobile operator (when excluding Fastweb), plan prices went down significantly, and the data allowances have increased by magnitudes.

Now, Italy has the lowest mobile data rates in Europe and the fourth-lowest worldwide.

You can choose from four/five SIM cards: Wind Tre (formerly Wind Italy and Tre Italy), TIM Italy, Vodafone Italy & Iliad (+Fastweb).

I put Fastweb, by Swisscom from Switzerland, in brackets because it initially was a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).

Then it became a mobile operator after it purchased Tiscali.

Currently, Fastweb is a 5G NR-only mobile operator with a national roaming agreement with Wind Tre.

I do not know if Fastweb gets “full” access to Wind Tre's network or if you have to deal with throttled 2G/3G/4G speeds, which is why I cannot recommend Fastweb yet (but you can let me know if it is any good).

You also have plenty of MVNOs, such as Kena Mobile by TIM Italy, Very Mobile by Wind Tre & ho. Mobile by Vodafone Italy.

But MVNOs in Italy are a waste of time – all have to deal with throttled speeds and worse coverage.

Anyway…

In March 2022, I did a big tour around Europe, where I (re-)tested SIM cards of the big players in 13/14 countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Italy (+Vatican City), Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia & Spain.

I stuck with Wind Tre, TIM Italy, Vodafone Italy & Iliad in Italy.

And honestly, each mobile operator is the best in its own way.

But I hate Wind Tre, the largest mobile operator, for one reason… but it is fine besides the issue I experienced.

Soon I will write a comparison post between the four Italian SIM cards.

So stay tuned for that 😏.
