Best Prepaid SIM Card in Denmark: Ultimate Comparison

Going to Denmark soon? Will you be exploring the country for its nature, or will you be going some attractions in the cities?

Whatever you will be doing in Denmark, it will most likely be fun. Those who like to party can go to the cities where there are plenty of bars. Those who love peace can enjoy their time in rural Denmark, like Region Zealand.

And if you are staying in Copenhagen, cross the Oeresund Bridge and you will be in Sweden! Do note that the toll for that bridge is fairly expensive, so you may want to consider taking the train.

Whatever you plan on doing in Denmark, I am sure you will have a great time there.

You may have read my Buying a SIM Card in Denmark guide, where I briefly introduce the Danish operators and talk about their prices.

One of the operators may have intrigued you, so you decided to read my Lycamobile Denmark review and/or my Lebara Denmark review. If you have done so, then you are already knowledgable about the telecom situation in Denmark.

Even if you have read all those articles, it may still be difficult to decide which operator is the best. What if you are on a budget and do not want to spend a lot of money on data? What if you are all about speeds and would be willing to pay a premium for that? What if you plan on using your Danish SIM card to call your friends and family abroad? Or to roam with your Danish SIM card within the EU without a surcharge?

All these questions are difficult to answer when considering the operators separately. Therefore, I have created this Denmark Ultimate Comparison, where I take everything I know about the operators into consideration, compare them, and test them against specific variables.

Based on all these results, it will be easier to determine which operator is the best for specific situations.

With that being said, welcome to the quest to find the best Danish prepaid SIM card for you. Let's get started.

Telecom Providers in Denmark

Denmark has 4 telecom providers: TDC, Telenor Denmark, Telia Denmark, and 3 (Tre) Denmark. All operators, except for 3 Denmark, have 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE networks. 3 Denmark does not have a 2G network, but it has a national roaming agreement with TDC on its 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE networks where 3 Denmark has no coverage.

Telia Denmark and Telenor Denmark share their networks in a partnership called TT-Netværket (the Telia and Telenor Network). Although the core networks of both operators are separate, you will get close to the same coverage and speeds with both Telia Denmark and Telenor Denmark.

The telecom situation in Denmark is unique. The main operators do not offer prepaid services anymore. As a result, travelers are forced to use a Danish Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO). Denmark has many MVNOs. However, most of them are not available to foreigners.

You need a Danish Personal Number (CPR – Centrale Personsregister) to activate most Danish SIM cards, which you will not get unless you plan on living in Denmark for at least three months. Therefore, the following 3 MVNOs are available to travelers: Lebara Denmark, Lycamobile Denmark, and OiSTER.

Lebara Denmark uses the Telenor network, which is shared with Telia. Lycamobile Denmark uses the Telia network, which is shared with Telenor. OiSTER uses the 3 Denmark network. You can get Lebara Denmark and Lycamobile Denmark SIM cards in various stores, but you can also order them online and get them delivered for free to a Danish address. OiSTER SIM cards are supposedly sold in various stores as well, but it is quite a challenge to find them. You are better off ordering those online too.

What is the best Danish prepaid SIM Card?

  • Overall, Lycamobile is the best SIM card in terms of price to data allowance ratio, EU roaming, international calls, speeds, and coverage
  • OiSTER has an unlimited data plan that costs 150 DKK, outdoing all the other operators

There is so much more to know about these operators, so read long to find the best SIM card for your situation.

What Frequencies are used in Denmark?

Denmark uses standard European frequencies and bands, which are also used in Asia. The frequencies are:

  • 2G: 900 MHz
  • 3G: 900 MHz & 2100 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2600 MHz on Bands 1, 3, 7, and 20

To learn whether your device supports these frequencies or not, go to this site to find out.

As always, make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, you will not be able to use any SIM card except the one from your home operator.

How do I buy a SIM Card in Denmark?

You can buy Danish SIM cards at select outlets, supermarkets, gas stations, and 7-Eleven. You can also order your SIM card online and get it delivered for free to a Danish postal address. As always, ask your ho(s)tel or Airbnb if they can keep your SIM card safe for you in case you wish to order them online. Else, they may be wondering why they received a random SIM card.

Although English is widely spoken in Denmark, a SIM card is called SIM kort, and a starter pack is called startpakke. Those will be easy words to pronounce but just saying brand name + SIM kort/card will do you well when trying to buy a SIM card.

  • Lebara SIM cards are free at Lebara outlets or 50 DKK in supermarkets, gas stations, and 7-Eleven. The starter kit comes with 10 DKK credit
  • Lycamobile SIM cards are handed out for free at Copenhagen Airport, although you have top-up immediately, or for 30 DKK in gas stations, supermarkets, and 7-Eleven
  • OiSTER SIM cards are sold for 30 DKK (starter credit), 40 DKK (starter data), or 100 DKK (data-only SIM card)

How do I Activate my Danish SIM Card?

In Denmark, you do not have to hand over your passport details to buy a SIM card. They can be anonymous if you want them to be. Once you purchase your SIM card, they are instantly ready to be used. With Lebara, you have to make a call first. Call Lebara customer service at (+45) 50 10 10 10. With all the others, making a call is not necessary.

How and Where can I Top Up my Danish Sim Card?

You can buy top-up vouchers at the same places where you purchased your Danish SIM card, which are many establishments throughout Denmark. Depending on the operator, you can redeem the voucher through a call, text, or online.

You can also buy credit on the websites of the operators themselves. They all accept international debit- and credit cards, and some even allow you to use PayPal.

Do note foreign currency exchange with traditional debit and credit cards are expensive because banks use unfavorable currency exchange rates or take an insanely high commission, which is almost criminal. Let’s not talk about PayPal’s fees. That is why I use Transferwise for any non-Euro payments (because my main currency is the Euro).

TransferWise allows you to convert your main currency to Singaporean dollars for a small fee (up to 8 times less than with your bank!) Getting a Transferwise Borderless account is FREE, so you will get an instant return on your investment. I even use my Transferwise debit card when paying for things abroad (with Google Pay as well).

What is the Best Danish SIM Card?

Now that you know everything there is to know about Lycamobile, Lebara, and OiSTER, it is time to figure out which SIM card is the best for you.

Pay As you Go rates will not be taken into consideration, as they are costly for data usage.

The Best Danish SIM Card for Budget Travel

In these scenarios, I will only be looking at local data and ignore all other perks because they will be analyzed in different scenarios. It is also assumed that you have ordered your SIM card online so that you do not have to spend money on SIM cards. That way, you can maximize your data allowance with the money you spend.

Spending 1 DKK

In some countries, 1 DKK, or the local equivalent (such as USD, EUR, GBP, etc.), you can get some credit or even data. However, 1 DKK is only enough for a piece of candy. You cannot even buy a SIM card with it, so you have to spend a bit more if you want to get data.

Spending 50 DKK

With 50 DKK, we can finally buy some packages. Let’s have a look.

LycamobileData-Only50 DKK5 GB1 Month
LycamobileNational50 DKK5 GB1 Month
LebaraSIM-Only Online50 DKK4 GB1 Month
LebaraData Online50 DKK4 GB1 Month
LebaraData Offline50 DKK3 GB1 Month
OiSTERCombo50 DKK2 GB1 Month
OiSTERData-Only50 DKK50 GB1 Day

Just looking at the numbers, you would think that OiSTER is killing it with 50 GB of data. They are… but the plan is only valid for 1 day. Therefore, they are not a good option.

Both of Lycamobile’s plans come with 5 GB of data that will last you for a full month. As a result, Lycamobile will be the best SIM card if you want to spend only 50 DKK on data.

Spending 100 DKK

With 100 DKK, we get access to all the plans available.

LycamobileAll-in-One100 DKK60 GB1 Month
LycamobileData-Only100 DKK80 GB1 Month
LycamobileNational100 DKK110 GB1 Month
LebaraSIM-Only Online100 DKK100 GB1 Month

LebaraData Online100 DKK100 GB1 Month
LebaraData Offline100 DKK60 GB1 Month
OiSTERCombo100 DKK40 GB1 Month
OiSTERData-Only80 DKK350 GB7 Days

Before I even analyze the plans, look at how BEAUTIFUL these data allowances are. They are so generous. I wish more operators around the world would offer so much data for such relatively low prices. There are some island nations out there where you have to spend even more than 100 DKK to get 500 MB or 1 GB.

Also, look how much data you get compared to spending 50 DKK on data. It is undoubtedly worth it to increase your budget a bit.

Anyway, looking at just the data allowances again, OiSTER once again kills it with 350 GB… but it is valid for 1 week only. You also have to be aware that these Data-only packages give you an allowance of 50 GB a day, which comes to 350 GB for a week.

What if you are staying in Denmark a bit longer? Then you are best off with Lycamobile’s national plan that comes with 110 GB for 1 month.

In summary, OiSTER will be the best SIM card if you want to spend only 100 DKK on data, use less than 50 GB a day, AND are staying in Denmark for less than a week. Else, Lycamobile will be the best SIM card if you are staying for more than a week.

Spending 200 DKK

With a budget of 200 DKK, will your data allowance double compared to spending 100 DKK? Let’s see. Before we do, I have to mention that I will only select the plan with the highest data allowance per category. For example, the Lycamobile All-in-One plans have two plans that meet this criterion. Only the one with the most substantial allowance will be highlighted.

LycamobileAll-in-One200 DKK200 GB1 Month
LycamobileData-Only100 DKK80 GB1 Month
LycamobileNational150 DKK250 GB1 Month
LebaraSIM-Only Online200 DKK300 GB1 Month

LebaraData Online200 DKK300 GB1 Month
LebaraData Offline200 DKK200 GB1 Month
OiSTERCombo150 DKKUnlimited1 Month
OiSTERData-Only200 DKK1500 GB1 Month

Once again, these data allowances are beautiful. Right off the bat, OiSTER is stealing the show with an unlimited plan and 1500 GB for a whole month. The only issue I have with the OiSTER unlimited plan is that there is no clear fair-use policy for this plan. It certainly will allow you to use more than 60 GB, which is the plan a step below this one, but it could be anything.

The data-only SIM card comes with 50 GB a day for 30 days, which comes at 1500 GB for a month.

Therefore, OiSTER will be the best SIM card if you want to spend only 200 DKK on data.

Spending 300 DKK

There is no point in making a comparison here because OiSTER offers an unlimited plan, and no other operator comes close to the 1500 GB allowance OiSTER has with their data-only SIM card. As a result, OiSTER is the best SIM card if you want to spend only 300 DKK on data.

The Best Danish SIM Card for Speed

Internet speed is one of the important factors in deciding which operator is the best. You could get 1000 GB of data, but what if your speeds are 2G speeds, 100 Kbps? You would never reach that allowance, even if you tried because it is so slow. Therefore, only looking at speed is not enough, neither is looking at any of the other factors.

I do have to note that when I was in Denmark, I was not able to find an OiSTER SIM card in the town I was staying in, Nykoebing Falster. My time in Denmark was short, so ordering one online would be a waste of time. As a result, I have only done speed tests with Lebara and Lycamobile. Both of them had 6 speed tests. 4 in Nykoebing Falster and 2 in Copenhagen. 2 of the speed tests done in Nykoebing Falster were done for the individual video reviews.

The Fastest Operator in Terms of Absolute Download Speed

I got the fastest download speed, 106 Mbps, with Lycamobile in Copenhagen Central Station.

The Fastest Operator in Terms of Average Download Speed

With Lycamobile, I managed to get the fastest average download speed of 51 Mbps throughout Denmark.

The Average Download Speed Ranked

  • Lycamobile: 51 Mbps
  • Lebara: 46 Mbps

The Fastest Operators in Terms of Absolute Upload Speed

I got the fastest upload speed, 36 Mbps, with Lebara at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport.

The Fastest Operator in Terms of Average Upload Speed

With Lebara, I managed to get the fastest average upload speed of 22 Mbps throughout Denmark.

The Average Upload Speed Ranked

  • Lebara: 22 Mbps
  • Lycamobile: 18 Mbps

So, Who is the Fastest?

Based on these results, Lycamobile has the fastest download speed, and Lebara has the fastest upload speed. Case closed, right? Well, not so fast.

The spread in speed between these two operators is simply too small. Why is that? Remember in the Telecom Providers section from much earlier? There we learned that Telenor and Telia share their networks, which also means that speed should be about the same. Well, that is what I concluded from these speed tests.

Yes, at some places, I did get much faster speeds with Lycamobile than with Lebara or vice versa. That is normal. But when you get more data sets and find the average, you will see it smoothens out, mainly because the networks are shared by Telia and Telenor., which is the app I use for my speed tests, did a study back in 2016 to see which mobile operator is the best in Denmark. TDC has the best download and upload speeds with an average of 45 Mbps and 22 Mbps, respectively. Telia followed with an average 30 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload. After that, we have Telenor with an average 29 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload. Finally, we have 3 with an average of 21 Mbps download and 9 Mbps upload.

Even though I was not able to do speed test with OiSTER, I do know that OiSTER is a 3 MVNO, which has the slowest mobile speeds in Denmark. I can also say with confidence that 3 is quite slow, as I was a 3 customer for 2.5 years when I lived in Denmark. When I moved to TDC, my speeds were much higher – I did not think that was possible because I was used to 3 speeds.

Based on all of this information, I can conclude both Lycamobile and Lebara are fastest because the networks both operators use, Telia and Telenor, share their networks, and are objectively faster than the 3 network, which OiSTER uses.

The Best Danish SIM card for EU Roaming

Although buying a local SIM card is almost always cheaper than roaming with your provider, the new EU regulation allows for those within the EU to roam without a surcharge within the EU. However, restrictions do apply.

For example, if you roam with your SIM card for more than 4 months in a year, then the operator may decide to charge you regular roaming rates. They can also impose a fair-use limit. In some countries, they do not have to offer free roaming because data rates are so low, like countries in the Baltics.

In the case of Denmark, the operators do offer EU roaming, but certain conditions apply.

  • With Lycamobile, the All-in-One plans and National plans come with an EU allowance
  • With Lebara, only the SIM-only packages purchased online come with an EU allowance
  • With OiSTER, only the combo plans come with an EU allowance

So, which operator is the best for EU roaming?

1 GB EU Data

If you want to spend the least amount of money on data in general, then the Lycamobile data-only plan that costs 25 DKK is your best bet. For 25 DKK, you get 1 GB and 1 GB to be used within the EU.

4 GB EU Data

If you need 4 GB EU data, get the Lycamobile 50 DKK national plan. It comes with 5 GB local data, 3.5 EU data, 500 local minutes, and 500 local SMS. Not precisely 4 GB, but that is the best deal for almost 4 GB.

10 GB EU Data

Need a lot of data when traveling within the EU and do not feel like buying multiple SIM cards? Get the 150 DKK OiSTER combo plan that comes with unlimited local data, 10 GB EU data, and unlimited local minutes.

The Best Danish SIM Card for International Calls

Both Lycamobile and Lebara are internationally known for offering low rates for international calls. The same applies to Denmark. However, call allowance can be used for local calls and international calls (to select destinations). This begs the question, who is the best for international calls?

OiSTER does not offer international calls at all, so only Lebara and Lycamobile are your options.

What do Lycamobile and Lebara offer?

  • Lycamobile: With the All-in-One Bundles, and depending on the plan you choose, you can call from 10 hours up to unlimited calls to 50 or 69 international destinations
  • Lebara: With both online and offline SIM-only plans, you can call from 4 hours up to 300 hours to 50 international destinations

What can we conclude from this?

  • Lycamobile allows you to call to 19 destinations more than with Lebara
  • With the right plan, Lycamobile allows you to make unlimited calls to 50 destinations
  • The most hours you can call to internationally is 300 hours with Lebara
  • Lebara offers international calls to all its 50 destinations with all their plans
  • The Lycamobile 200 DKK 60 GB plan is the only plan that allows you to call to 69 destinations

Now it is time to compare where you can call to with each operator.

The Best Danish SIM Card for Going off the Beaten Track

Having coverage throughout Denmark is important. Otherwise, you cannot enjoy the data you paid for. Some may just stay in one of the bigger Danish cities, like Copenhagen, Aarhus, or Odense. Others will go on adventures in the beautiful Danish nature, like in region Zealand, on Fyn, or Jutland. Especially for the latter group, it is important to know which operator has the best coverage.

Telia, Telenor, and 3 share their coverage maps on their websites. Some operators around the world do not do this and claim they cover *% of the population. Even if you have coverage with a particular operator in some remote Danish town, you should not expect the fastest speeds out there. The general rule is the more populated the area, the higher the speeds. The less populated the area, the slower the speeds.

Telia (Lycamobile)

Telia Denmark/Lycamobile Denmark Coverage Map

Telenor (Lebara)

Telenor Denmark/Lebara Denmark Coverage Map

3 (OiSTER)

3 Denmark/Oister Coverage Map

Based on these maps, you will see that practically all of Denmark is covered by these Danish operators. However, I do want to warn you if you plan on going with OiSTER. Even though 3 claims they have good coverage throughout Denmark, my experience with them, 3 – not OiSTER, proved otherwise, especially on the road (in a car or on a train). Even in Copenhagen city center, I experienced black spots with 3, so I am not a fan of the 3 network.

As a result, both Lycamobile and Lebara are the best SIM cards for those wanting to go off the beaten track.

The Best Overall Danish SIM Card

Now that we have gone over everything you need to know about Lycamobile, Lebara, and OiSTER, it is finally time to determine which SIM card is the best Danish prepaid SIM card out there.

You have probably noticed that each operator is the best in some way if you only look at one variable. However, once you combine all of them, it becomes easier to see which one is the best… for you.

Some may care about network quality, others want the fastest speeds, while others want to get the most data for the money spent.

We have learned that Lycamobile is the best if you spent up to 100 DKK because you get the most data with them. If you spend more than 100 DKK, then OiSTER offers the most data. But, OiSTER using the 3 network has the worst in this list. Both Lycamobile and Lebara have the best coverage because Telia and Telenor share their networks. This also means that Lycamobile and Lebara are the best for those who care about speed because they are the fastest. Need a large EU data allowance but do not want to spend too much money? Go for Lycamobile if you want to spend less than 50 DKK on data and OiSTER if you plan on spending 150 DKK on data.

So, which Danish SIM card is the best? It is easy to say that Lycamobile is the best prepaid SIM card in Denmark because they offer the most data for those on a small budget, have excellent speeds and coverage, are the best for EU roaming, and allow you to use your minutes to the most international destinations. Lycamobile is the best prepaid SIM card for those visiting Denmark.

It takes a lot of time to analyze, translate & review the SIM card options worldwide (especially to test them out).

Your support helps me keep producing impartial content by eliminating the need to recommend international SIM cards as the best local SIM card (but some of them CAN be useful).

Every Ko-Fi donation, one-time or monthly, helps me to spend more time creating local SIM card buying guides.
